I recently purchased a home. During the home inspection, the boiler was noted as being extremely old and probably in need of replacement. Today, 1/12/24, I called both RISE Engineering for a free home energy assessment on behalf of ************ Energy as well as GEM Plumbing & Heating to see if they could service my boiler. *** said they would charge $199 just to show up. Both ******* from RISE and the reps from GEM found that there were high levels of carbon monoxide being emitted from the boiler. ******* from RISE clarified that the boiler was NOT unsafe as it was being vented properly, but it needed replacement ASAP. The reps from GEM said it needed to be replaced and got me a quote (the quote was $7k higher than everyone else I called for the same labor/equipment). Fast forward a few hours, and my family is cold. It's winter in ************. I check the thermostat and the heat should be on. I call GEM and ask if they could send a rep out as it appears they left something off. They say they will send someone out. They then call me back and say that they left the heat off intentionally as it was a safety hazard, they won't be coming back out, sorry the techs didn't tell you, and call the fire department if need be. I then had to scramble with my family to find accommodations. I'm not mad about them shutting the boiler off. I understand that from a safety and legal perspective. But not telling me in the first place, and then telling me to call the fire department after charging me $200 is completely unacceptable.
