Merry Maids of Metro, a Halifax-based housecleaning company, was the small-business category winner of the Torch Awards competition hosted by BBB Serving the Atlantic Provinces in May, thereby becoming eligible for the international competition. Last week, the Better Business Bureau Institute for Marketplace Trust announced the winners for the 2016 International Torch Award for Ethics (ITAE). Among these winners is Merry Maids of Metro, the first Canadian company ever to receive this prestigious award. Along with only three other companies, including the Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Merry Maids of Metro is being recognized for demonstrating outstanding character leadership and organizational ethics. The ITAE winners and finalists will be honoured at a special luncheon ceremony on September 20, 2016 in Indianapolis, IN, as part of the International Assembly of Better Business Bureaus.

“Seeing a locally owned company recognized at an international level for their commitment to ethical business practices is really exciting to see” says Peter Moorhouse, President & CEO of the Better Business Bureau Atlantic Provinces. “This company lives and breathes the kind of values we stand for, and that commitment deserves to be in the spotlight.”

Sandra Watson, Owner and Operator of Merry Maids of Metro will receive the award in Indianapolis. She says, “At the Torch Awards event in Halifax, I invited all of our employees to attend with me. I have so much pride in the people who work for us and give their all every day, and it was important to me that they share in that recognition. I’m still absorbing the news about the international award. I just wish I could bring my team with me to Indianapolis, too!”
