The nation's three major credit reporting agencies, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, created a joint venture, Central Source, LLC, to oversee their compliance with the Fair & Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003 (FACTA). This act allows consumers to receive a free credit report once every 12 months from each of the three major credit reporting bureaus. is the website jointly operated by the three credit bureaus to comply with their obligations based on the new amendment to the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Consumers should understand the "calendar year" is 12 months based on the date the credit report was first requested. provides free credit reports only. To obtain your credit score, a fee will be accessed. Additionally, other marketing items may be listed on the website; however, consumers are under no obligation to purchase in order to receive their free credit report. Some states allow their citizens two free copies of their credit reports each year. Consumers should check the websites of the three major credit reporting bureaus to determine if they qualify. Also, should a consumer be denied credit, the financial institution must tell them from what credit reporting agency they received their information. At that time, the consumer is entitled to request a copy of their credit report based on denial of financial services.
