BBB Tip: What consumers should know about the national dockworkers strike

By Better Business Bureau. October 3, 2024.

This week, 45,000 U.S. dockworkers went on strike, shutting down U.S. ports.

Depending on how long the strike lasts, consumers could be affected by shortages of retail goods from overseas, including holiday gifts, fruits and vegetables, and cars.

While most retailers have been preparing for the strike, consumers should take note of the following:

  • Price gouging. Better Business Bureau often receives reports about the frequency of scams involving sought-after items. Some state attorneys general offices have initiated state price-gouging laws, which automatically go into effect during a declared state of emergency to prevent businesses from over-charging customers.
  • Holiday shopping. While most retailers say they were ready in anticipation of the strike, some may not have the inventory to keep up with holiday shopping demands. BBB has tips on navigating the holiday shopping season.
  • Supply chain/out of stock warnings. BBB has reports of websites telling customers that an item is out of stock, and not giving a refund. If you come across any sites like this, please report it to BBB’s Scam Tracker.
  • Be wary of social media scams. Unfortunately, scammers take advantage of news events to try to trick people out of their money, sometimes through social media networks. Know the spots of a scam to protect yourself and your money.
