When we arrived yesterday as a first time patient, I had a couple of additional papers to fill out and sign, one of which was adding anyone that might also accompany our minor son to an appointment. I added my husband just in case and when I returned the paperwork I was asked if my husband was the biological father. I thought that very strange because I have never been asked that before. I took that opportunity to let her know in a friendly way that the term biological needs to be removed. I am not my son’s guardian, nor am I his biological mom. I am his mom, and he is adopted. I was then asked if I could prove it. At this point, my blood pressure was rising. I was in complete shock. I have never once in his almost 16 yrs been asked by ANYONE to prove that my son is mine. He has seen multiple doctors, had 2 surgeries, enrolled in school, got a drivers permit. NO ONE has EVER asked me to prove that he’s mine, aside from the US Government when we got his passport for travel. I told her no, that he has been ours since he was 5 minutes old, and his adoption paperwork is not something that I carry around with me. (and honestly, I wouldn’t have shown it if I did). She went to talk to someone in the office and from there to another person. When she came back, she told me that it’s HPD policy that is needs to be a biological parent or they would have to see paperwork for proof of adoption. I’m wondering, how do they prove any other mom is a biological mom? Do they ask every parent for a copy of their child’s birth certificate? Is a step-parent not a real parent either? I let her know that we would find another doctor and to cancel our appt. Biological has absolutely nothing to do with my son’s medical care. They need to educate themselves on what that means for parents that they deal with and prevent this from happening to another adoptive parent. **there needs to be an option to leave LESS than 1 star**
