Man extradited from UK back to US

In May, authorities in the United States extradited a man from the United Kingdom for his alleged role in a multi-million-dollar business email scam. Prosecutors claim that Chibundu Joseph Anuebunwa impersonated corporate executives and sent emails to employees in hopes of obtaining money from them.

FBI and DOJ arrested 74 people in BEC scams

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice arrested 74 individuals they claimed to be involved with business email scams. The effort, called Operation Wire Wire, netted suspects in scams that totaled $14 million and resulted in arrests of individuals in the United States, Canada, Nigeria, Poland and Mauritius.

Three men arrested for part in BEC scams

The Nigerian Police Force and Interpol arrested three men they said were part of a business email scam that went by “TMT Gang”. Authorities claimed that TMT compromised half a million emails in more than 150 countries.

Nigerians arrested for alleged involvement in BEC scams

Eleven Nigerians were arrested by local police and Interpol for their alleged involvement in a business email scam that targeted over 50,000 individuals. Six of those arrested were supposedly members of Silver Terrier, a BEC organization that has evaded authorities for years.

The investigation revealed that the business had received an email from a spoofed email address, which was very similar to a general contractor’s legitimate email address.
