What BBB does
How BBB works
Accreditation
Accreditation means a business commits to BBB's standards and is accountable to them. BBB reviews eligibility, monitors conduct, and responds when standards are not met.
Accreditation does not guarantee performance. It signals a commitment to responsible business practices.
Business Profiles & Reviews
Business Profiles bring together key information in one place, including business details, customer reviews, complaint history, and BBB actions.
Reviews are submitted by consumers and moderated using published guidelines. They are not endorsements.
Complaint and Dispute Resolution
BBB helps consumers and businesses resolve disputes by forwarding complaints, tracking responses, and documenting outcomes.
BBB does not take sides, issue judgments, or provide legal rulings.
Ratings
BBB ratings reflect how a business interacts with the marketplace, including responsiveness, transparency, and complaint handling.
A rating is not the same as accreditation. Accredition is voluntary; ratings apply to all eligible businesses.
Standards for Trust
Accredited businesses commit to eight Standards for Trust:
- Build Trust
- Advertise Honestly
- Tell the Truth
- Be Transparent
- Honor Promises
- Be Responsive
- Safeguard Privacy
- Embody Integrity
These standards guide how accredited businesses operate and how BBB evaluates conduct.
Local action, shared infrastructure
BBB serves communities across the United States and Canada through a network of local BBBs. BBB.org provides shared tools, data, and information at scale.
