Parents interested in saving for their child’s college education have two types of 529 plans from which to choose: college savings plans and prepaid tuition plans. The college savings plan allows earnings to grow tax-deferred and withdrawals are tax-free when used for qualified education expenses, according to FINRA, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. Every state offers at least one of these plans. Some states offer both, and a consortium of private colleges also offers a prepaid tuition plan.
