Additional Notes

Complaint: On December 12, 2012, I called the U.S. Career Institute to ask about training in the Medical Billing or Coding field. I informed the representative that I needed a job working from home as I am disabled. The representative said that the Medical Billing field was the best choice if I wanted a job working from home. I signed up for the course and paid in full the $979 tuition fee. I later paid an additional 2 payments of $69 each and one final payment of $122 for software and a book that they told me I would need. I paid a total of $1239.00 and received a check for $50 as part of their incentive program. I am out $1189. I completed the course with a 99% GPA. I signed up for the the success promise and completed the GE-200 course with a GPA of 97.95%. At the end of the GE-200 I had to choose a career path. The details of this career path were not available until I had completed the GE-200. There were only 2 options when choosing the career path: Look for work in an office or start a business. Find a job working from home was not even an option. I made it clear from my very first contact with the U.S. Career Institute that I needed a job working from home as I am disabled. I am not able to drive due to my medications and I am not able to sit for long periods of time. I need to take frequent breaks. I made reference to all of this numerous times during the GE-200 course. We were asked to set goals during this course. My immediate goal was always to find a job working from home that would accommodate my physical limitations. No one ever mentioned that this was not an option. No one ever mentioned starting a business. I emailed student services twice asking for a refund and have yet to hear back from them. I informed the graduate services counselor that I was seeking a refund. She said I was not eligible, but to contact student services. I informed her that I already had, but that they would not even acknowledge my emails sent through their website contact form. While working with Graduate Services after the GE-200 course, the graduate services counselor said that in 15 years she had never seen anyone get a job working from home after completing the medical billing class. My wife already has a home based business and she told me that we could use it for medical billing as there was not time to start a business from scratch while meeting all of the deadlines imposed by graduate services. I continued to meet the deadlines imposed by graduate services and ended up requiring additional medical attention and medication because of the time I was spending on the class. They require a lot of busy work, that doesn't accomplish much. I submitted my assignments on time, yet the graduate services counselor waited to grade my assignments until she was 3 behind. Each assignment had several parts to it. The graduate services counselor then returned those three assignments to me requiring additional work on them. She placed a deadline of less than a week to redo those 3 assignments, plus I would have needed to complete this week's regular assignment. Part of the assignment that I would need to redo, would be to start up a new business as she did not like the slogan (Providing virtual services around the globe) on my wife's current business. She said it would be unprofessional to use my wife's current business to do medical billing. It was at this point that I informed the graduate services counselor that I could not continue the course because there was simply not enough time to start a new business, redo 3 previous lessons and complete the lesson that is currently due which is to research and call 25 businesses, find the hiring manager's name and send out 25 packets including a business card, flyer and letter of introduction. The business card would be for the business that isn't even created yet. One part of the other assignment is to find 200 local medical practices that meets the graduate services counselor's requirements of being a small office with only one or two employees. The graduate services counselor continually stressed local on these businesses. The nearest town to me has only 12,000 people. I searched within 200 miles and was not able to find the required 200 medical facilities that would meet her requirements. Most of the medical facilities in neighboring towns are part of larger networks, and do not meet the requirements of the graduate services counselor. It is unreasonable to expect to find what the graduate services counselor is asking for. It is unreasonable to expect that much work to be done in a week. Further more, I do not feel qualified to start a business in this field with the training that the U.S. Career Institute has provided me. Medical billing companies and medical personnel appear to all be in agreement that there is no chance of getting a job working from home in the medical billing field after taking this class. They also appear to be in agreement that there is no chance that I would be able to effectively service clients IF I could find one that would hire me, based upon the training that I have received from the U.S. Career Institute. I am seeking a full refund because I made it clear from the beginning that I needed a job working from home. The U.S. Career Institute personnel are the ones that told me which course to to take to meet my goal of finding a job working from home. There wasn't even a find a job working from home option when it came time to chooses a career path. The graduate services counselor said that in fifteen years she had not seen anyone get a job working from home doing medical billing after completing this course. The U.S. Career Institute should refund my money in full. I will be happy to return the materials they sent me.

Desired Settlement: The U.S. Career Institute should refund the $1189.00 in full. They did not deliver what I paid for, which was training for a job that I could get hired to do from home.

Business Response: Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Case #*******. I have reviewed all records and notes on ***** ********* account. As of today April 7, 2014, I will cancel the account, refund the money paid of $1,239.00. The account is closed and all monies will be refunded. Please allow up to 30 days before the refund to be processed to the credit card used for payment of the program. No further action is required on the account.

Thank you,

Additional Notes

Complaint: I signed with At-Home Professions which falsely advertised an A+ rating with the BBB, even though they aren't even recognized. I had to research to find they were affiliated with Weston Distance Learning and have several other names. They advertised for a Medical Transcription course that they claim is in high demand, you can work from home, and you can earn a lot of money. I have relatives and friends who worked in that field in the past, many years ago and they said it was a good field. I signed up for the course with the understanding that if I made good grades, paid on time, and didn't find a job they would reimburse the full amount of the course. This is not true either. After the course is complete, they require substantial additional schooling to receive any discounts or reimbursements. I found a forum with many people complaining not only about this school but the whole concept of medical transcript, and other schools that offer this course and they are unable to find work.I then began to research and found that if one did get hired, it would be through a school that was accredited with AHDI, which AHP is not. I then called multiple doctors' offices and hospitals to see if any jobs are even available. They said they have all gone to automated systems for transcript. I contacted the school by phone, to request a refund and to drop the school. The man I spoke with said I would have to speak with someone in the graduate department. I received a call back from a woman that was extremely rude, even though it was HER job to try and talk me into continuing the course. She tried to belittle me and say people that can't get a job just don't try hard enough. You need to contact a minimum of 200 places before they even want to talk about a refund. One lady I spoke to about a job at a hospital even felt sorry for me saying she didn't understand why they were advertising that as a HIGH DEMAND JOB. This appears to be a dying field to me NOT high demand as promised.

Desired Settlement: I have paid $805.96 as of 2/28/14. I would like nothing less than a full refund of my $805.96.

Business Response: Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Case #******* ******** *****. When you log-on to the BBB website page and search At-Home Professions, Fort Collins CO, the BBB website directs you to At-Home Professions. To find more info on the business you can click "here" which takes you to the page listing the corporate business, the school and the rating. At-Home Professions is accredited with the DETC (Distance Education Training Counsel, Washington DC) and is approved and regulated by the Texas Workforce Commission, Career Schools and Colleges, Austin, Texas. The field of transcription has several options to search for employment with online services to in-house offices. As with any career training upon graduation time needs to be dedicated to a job search. Ms ***** enrolled in the Medical Transcription and Editing program on 1/23/13 and enrolled in the Success Promise program on 1/25/13. Ms ***** has completed 79% of her program and submitted her most recent Quiz 31 on 2/13/14. She has 15 months to complete her studies to be eligible to participate in the Success Promise Program. The program is no-charge for those students who wish to pursue additional training to learn techniques to market their new skill. We firmly believe in the success of this program working with a Human Resource professional for 6 weeks and then with our graduate counselors that you will find an internship, externship or employment on or before 6 months. If a student has met all of the requirements of the Success Promise Program and unable to find work they are eligible for a refund. I would encourage Ms ***** to finish her studies and get signed up the marketing program class. If she does not want to do the SP program, I would encourage her to complete her studies and focus on the Career Book provided in the last pack of materials in Course 5 that was shipped on 10/17/13 and also talk with our graduate services department on what to do next.

We wish Ms ***** the best of luck,

I have not resolved my issue with Weston Distance Learning Inc. They told me to call at least 200 companies to see if any one is hiring. I called many doctors, hospitals and small clinics. All the responses were the same. They all say they do not use medical transcriptionist any longer. I went to the web site the school also told me about ******* and the only job openings are for experienced transcriptionist. I know the success promise is supposed to get you ready to find a job after graduating except when I only get a negative response from all my job searches so far then it doesn't really seem that promising. I have been doing this school for over a year and have invested a lot of time into it. I am a very dedicated person so I would not want to give up this time I have put in for no reason.  The school does not have job placement so at the end I will be doing my own job search as I am now. I really do not see the point in continuing this school. Any help with this situation would be appreciated.

Business Response:

In response to Case ******* ******** ***** - Yes it is correct the school does not guarantee job placement. At-Home Professions is like many other higher education training programs, the school teaches the skills for a new position and it will be up to the graduate to pursue employment. The school does however offer a great program that teaches techniques on how to find a job which Ms ***** is not willing to participate in. As a result of the review Ms ******* school recoreds, I am going to waive the balance due on Ms ******* account in the amount of $1,800.00 and no more payments are due on the account. Ms ***** has completed 79% of her program and the tuition paid to date will cover the material, instruction and administrative costs involved for shipments of 5 courses. No more payments or assignments are due on the account, the account was closed as of today, April 7th, 2014.

We wish Ms ***** the best of luck in her future endeavors.

Complaint: I went to a seminar where I was told the Medical Transcriptionist is in high demand. The doctors are always in need and I could work from home and make up to $50,000 per year. Now that I am $1000. invested and alot of man hours, I am close to being finished. So I call Doctors offices to start looking for a job. I am told by all that I call that Transcriptionist is a thing of the past, and the doctors use computers now, not people. This school we are paying good money to is selling us on an extinct product. I want them to pay my money back that I have already paid them and drop what is owed. My sister and Neice also got into this school on false pretenses. We have let our homes suffer spending all of our time working our jobs, and working on this school, while still trying to get our Wife, Mom, etc duties done, and just to find out we were taken for a ride, and ripped off. Can you help us get our money back from this place? They need to be shut down, they are making a fortune ripping people off with a promise that they cannot provide. Thank you for you time, ***** ********

Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Case #******* ***** ********. On August 10, 2012, Ms ******** enrolled in the Medical Transcription and Editing program and has completed 80% of her progam. Ms ******** enrolled in our Success Promise Program on August 13, 2012. We firmly believe in the success of this program working with a Human Resource professional learning to write resumes, coverletters, etc. then you move on to working with our graduate counselors perfecting interviewing skills, and how to contact employers or transcription services. It is a time sensitive program and the participants must meet the weekly assignments. We expect students to gain an intership, externship or employment before or by the end of 6 months. If the student has met all of the requirements and unable to find work they are eligible for a refund. The guidelines to the Success Promise program indicate a student must complete the Medical Transcription and Editing program in 15 months to be eligible to participate in the Promise program. Ms ******** completed thru Quiz 32 and has to complete thru Quiz 39 to graduate and it's been 19 months since her enrollment date. Consumer Response: Complaint: *******

I am rejecting this response because: I have written the school asking for them to explain their answer, I haven't heard back from them. They need to explain how I would be able to get a job if doctors and hospitals do not hire. Am I going to be able to get an at home job when I finish school or am I wasting my time. I am taking these classes to get a work from home job. As they said at the seminar. That is the only reason I got into this. Is she saying the jobs come from a service? That's why the doctors and hospitals aren't hiring?

Regards,

***** ********

Business Response:

At-Home Professions provides the training to learn a new skill and a new graduate will need to put in the time and effort to find a new job upon graduation. We do not guarantee a job; however, we do have a great program for those students who meet the specific criteria upon graduation. The Success Promise program is a risk-free program assisting our graduates with their job search. We know if a graduate sticks with the program and completes the marketing strategy program they will have a greater opportunity to find employment. As mentioned in the other response I encourage Ms ******** to enroll in this program upon completing her studies. Typically the smaller medical offices are a better place to get started than a big office or hospitals. There are also transcription services who employ transcriptionist and you will often have to take a pre-employment test to get hired on. There are options and we do have graduates working in the field.

The other option is if Ms ******** does not want to continue her studies, we can cancel her program and I would be willing to waive the balance due of $1,550.00 of her remaining tuition. Ms ******** has completed  82% of her studies. The money Ms ******** has paid to date will cover the material, instruction and administration costs. If Ms ******** wants to cancel I would waive the balance of $1,550, her balance would then be zero no further payments or assignments would be due.

Please advise how Ms ******** would like to proceed with her program.

Thank you,

Complaint: I knew I was late on making my payments. I told the guy that was calling me that I would make the payment the next day due to me being at work. I asked if he could call me at 10 a.m. to make the payment of $300 and then I would pay the rest off once I had gotten my tax return. He never called and when I called their office it would just ring. No one had answered my call and so I waited. I was hit hard from losing my job with a temporary site that had shut down. I now have a job that pays me $75 a week now. When the gentleman called me back to make the payment he turned everything around on me. Told me that I did not call nor did I ask him to call me the next day. He was completely rude to me, making me feel as if I was lying about something when I was clearly not and I told him I would make the payment. Couple of days went by and never received a call to pay the remainder part of the tuition. Now that I am waiting on the money to come back he is harassing me daily to make the payment. I refuse to answer because the gentleman is completely rude. The staff there do not want to help you succeed in any way they just want their money. I am trying to make ends meet and I am struggling to make any payments that I can.

Desired Settlement: I just want to succeed with this certification. I want to be someone but if the company can be a little patient with me so I can make the payments. I would like to have an extension so that I can catch up on all the payments.

Business Response: Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Case #******* **** ****. In review of **** ****'s school records the last payment made on the account was 10/1/13. The November 2013 payment was missed and the school started collection efforts with various options available to get payments current. This process started on 11/14/13 and after unsuccessful attempts to resolve the matter **** ****'s account was moved to an outside collection agency on 2/7/14. Currently, the account is $295.00 past due with the next payment due on 4/3/14 which includes the past due amount of $354.00 and the April monthly payment. I noted **** ****'s account regarding this complaint and if a payment is made of $354.00 on or before 4/4/14, we can mark the account current and remove from collections so **** can continue on in the program and get a certificate. If **** would like to continue with the program and make a payment to bring the account current please contact *****, assistant manager of student services, at ************, ext 4534 and she will process the payment and remove the account from collection efforts.

Complaint: Hello my name is ****** ******** and I have an issue with this company. I was doing an online program with them for medical billing and got to lesson 18. I called them because I was stuck on it and they would not help me because I didn't understand it. I was having issues paying the payments after that time because I was having issues with my pregnancy and when my son ****** was born he had a Peri-rectal abscess which lasted 8 weeks after he was born and i called to let them know I was having issues paying the payments. I owed almost a 1000$ and the guy on the phone told me they would charge interest per month which was fine. So I didn't pay for four months and long behold the school itself is trying to say I owe close to 1900$ which is paying for the full program! Is this right or even fair and is their anything I can do? Please let me know thanks ******

Desired Settlement: Pay what was originally owed which was upper $900's. I didn't complete the course and told them I would pay off completely when taxes came!

Business Response: Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Case #*******. Ms ******** enrolled in the Medical Coding and Billing program on March 5, 2013. On July 8, 2013, Ms ******** called student services; and spoke with our representative ****, to inform the school that she was going on unpaid maternity leave and wouldn't be able to pay for a few months. Ms ******** advised she could pay July"s payment but the other months money would be tight. **** discussed Ms ********** options at the time of this call and came up with the following solutions: **** waived the August payment, changed Ms ********* payment due date and brought her account current. Complaint: I was an online student with USCI from 5/2013 to 10/2013,I cancelled their program because the course "Claims Adjusters" had a guarantee that I would get a job if I completed the program in 6 months. This is not true. Ilive in NC and in order to even be considered for a claims adjuster job you must pass a state exam, of which USCI did not prepared me for. I then sent them this email after being charged $49.00 three more months, this is the email that I sent:Dear Student Services,This email is to place you on notice about my account. I have withdrawn from your school and online Claims Adjuster course as of October/2013. I'm ordering you to stop debiting my account immediately, in fact, I want a refund on the previous months of November/2013, December/2013 and January/2013.Your school did not provide accurate information about your studies, you claim that after finishing your course in 6 months you could guarantee a job. After doing research in the North Carolina Insurance industry, I found out that this is not possible without an Insurance Adjusters License from the state of NC, which your course does not prepare me for. Therefor you falsely advertised your online course and training in becoming a Claims Adjuster.I was never given the background and experience of your online instructors, and when I inquired about whether or not had any of the instructors worked in the claims adjuster field, I was only told that the instructors have taken the course and are qualified. As a person who has had a career in law enforcement and went to college, a student should know and understand if the teacher or instructor who is teaching the class has a background in the same field of study. Again I feel that your school was dishonest in this regards. Finally, I want to again reiterate the fact that I stop taken the course back in October/2013 when I called to cancel the online studies. I was told that your policy says that I have to still pay the balance, but I vehemently disagree

Desired Settlement: To be refunded the money I spent on this course and for them to stop debiting my account immediately.Thank you in advance for all you help and consideration in looking into my case.Respectfully,***** ** ************

Business Response: In response to Case # *******. Mr. ************ enrolled into the Insurance Claims Adjuster program on 5/24/13. Because state and county requirements vary and change from state to state, we advise students to investigate their state requirements as stated in the school catalog and on the enrollment agreement. Mr. ************'s school account has been cancelled and a refund will be issued of $413.50 for the amount paid. Please allow up to 15-30 business days for the refund request to be processed.

Complaint: Was guaranteed a full refund if I wasn't working in my field of study after 1 year as long as I took the additional job training course my financial circumstances had changed I asked for my payment date to be moved was told this would not be a problem then my payment became "late" ruling me ineligible for the job class I called customer service they were going to "fix the issue" so I could sign up for the additional class I never heard from them again

Desired Settlement: This place does not deserve a good BBB score unless they are buying it with money they steal from people trying to get work and get an education at the same time.

Business Response: Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Case #*******. On October 1, 2013, the Ms ******** took advantage of a special discount offer and the discount was entered incorrectly however, it was corrected by ****** in Student Services, on October 15, 2013. Ms ******** has received a total discount amount of $353.80 off her tuition. At the time of enrollment, students can sign up for the optional Success Promise Program. Students must then meet specific criteria during their studies to start the Success Promise Program. Ms ******* did not sign up for the Success Promise once she was enrolled in the Pharmacy Technician program. It was not until she graduated that Ms ******** inquired about the Success Promise which is outside of the opportunity to sign up. After review of Ms *******'s student records and this case, I will make an exception and open up the Success Promise program to Ms *******s. Consumer Response: Complaint: *******

I am rejecting this response because:
I did attempt to sign up for success promise and was ruled ineligible, after reading all of the other complaints against the business it has become glaringly evident that I have wasted my money.  Why would I want to take a class that multiple persons have filed complaints about and waste more of my time.  This place is a scam I would like a refund so I can go elsewhere and take this class. I do not want to waste anymore of my time with these worthless money grubbers.

Business Response: In response to Case #******* ***** *******s. Ms ******** inquired about the Success Promise after she graduated not at the time of enrollment when it is offered. As stated in my first response I would make an exception and get Ms ******** started in the program; however this does not seem to be an option Ms ******** would like to take advantage of. Ms ******** completed 100% of her Pharmacy Tech program on 9/12/2013. Ms ******** tuition for the Pharmacy Tech program is $1,269.00 plus $16.50 shipping. Ms ******** received a discount of $353.80 off her tuition and has a balance of $201.20 still due on her account. I will waive the balance due of $201.20 so no further payments will be due on the account. Also if Ms ******** wishes to pursue guidance on how to put a marketing plan together she will still be able to contact our graduate services department for assistance. ************* **** *****

Consumer Response: Complaint: *******

I am rejecting this response because:I was not told I needed to enroll in the success promise program at the time of enrollment.  I was under the impression I had to complete my course before I could enroll in success promise.  In order to qualify for success promise you must pass the course with at least an 85% , have 50% of your tuition paid, and your account must be in good standing.  If I had to know that I had to have an 85% it stands to reason that I waited to the end of the class to enroll in success promise.  The problem remains I have wasted enough time I want my money back so I can take this course locally in the hopes of actually being able to get a job in the pharmacy industry.

Complaint: I enrolled in At Home professions at a seminar in my hometown expecting to learn a trade that I had previously studied at a legitimate college. To my dismay I received nothing more than a hefty bill for material that was never received. I completed two courses and made payments as expected. I received very little correspondence from this "school" regarding my completed assignments. Awaiting another course I tried to contact the school on numerous occasions to no avail. I was forwarded to answering machines and received "mailer daemon" from my emails. This was in 2009-2010; I received a collections letter in the mail that is for $1446.00 on 2/13/14. I refuse to pay this "school" for materials and services not rendered. I spoke to the collection agency **** Corporation and they were not helpful in the least stating I had entered into a legally binding contract and I have to take care of this matter. I was told that my balance was sent to collections in early 2010, during this time period I was never notified of a past due account and after three months of no response from the "school" I assumed they were no longer in business; which would not surprise me given that their correspondence had ceased after a large payment I had made. I am appalled at the unprofessional and immoral practices of Weston Distance Learning business.

Desired Settlement: I would like this account brought to a zero balance and closed and removed from my credit report.

Business Response:

In response to Case #*******, ******* ****** enrolled in our Medical Transcription program on 4/27/09. Ms ****** began falling behind in payments and started receiving late payment communication on 5/15/09. Over a period of several months the school assisted Ms ****** with payment arrangements and worked  to remove her account from collection efforts two times and then on 7/16/10, her account was moved once again to an outside collection agency for collection efforts. Today, Ms ****** owes $1,451.00 on her account. Ms ****** completed 57% of her program. Information on payments, refunds and cancellation is outlined in the school catalog and on the enrollment agreement. Ms ****** is responsible for the material and instruction she received however, in review of her school records I am going to waive the balance due of $1,451.00, cancel Ms ******** account and the amount paid to date will satisfy her financial obligation at this time. I will request to remove her account from collections, please allow up to 30 days to remove the account from collection efforts.

The account is cancelled, no further payments are required.

Complaint: I signed up for the online classes for medical assistant. I went through the whole course. Read all the material. Took all the tests. I had high marks on all my tests. Spent over $1100 (and I am still making payments). After completing all the courses I went to take the state test. Feeling well prepared and hardly anything I learned was on the state test and SURPRISE I failed. I feel ripped off and when I called all I heard was some lady screaming at me, interrupting me and accusing me of not checking with the state to find out what was on the test. I thought that's why I was taking their online course...to prepare for the state test. These courses were an absolute waste of my time. WHAT A RIP OFF!!!

Additional Notes

Complaint: I had enrolled in US Career Institute (Weston Dist. Learning) in course (Medical Assistant) as a military spouse, price shown on web site shown 1279 USD plus 29 USD OR 979 USD IF paid in full, and also shown discount of 25% for Active Military/and their spouses. As I enrolled I paid in full and was charged 988 USD. Since then I and my husband *** Burian spent much time trying to resolve with Weson/USCI to no avail. They state that ONLY one discount is possible, and that discount favorable to us applied (military discount), which isn't true in fact either (price paid in full 979 USD - we paid "military 25% discounted price" 988 USD). It was my belief when we enrolled that price would be less that 750 USD, now it's 988 USD, totally unacceptable way to mislead military families (plus - I am getting this course to work as volunteer - UNPAID - on military clinic here in ******* where my husband is stationed). Many emails/phone calls where Weston/USCI contradits itself, stating "only one discount can be used" then pay in full price being a "discount" in one email and not in other. Very disapointing...

Desired Settlement: I do believe price we should paid was 979 USD -244.75 USD (25% discount military spouse) = 734.25 USD Than was the price we believed to be paid as we set up enrollment over telephone and emailed orders to customers service of Weston DL/USCI. Since then we spent much time emailing and calling to get resolve (phone cost est 50 USD for nothing - no resolve).

Business Response: Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Case *******. U.S. Career Institute, ******** ****** corresponded with ***, husband of *****, regarding the Medical Assistant course he enrolled ***** in. I have listened to the phone call recording and reviewed the emails between *** and ********. ******** explained the military discount was 25% off the tuiton and the paperwork *** needed to submit for the discount. ******** honored the 25% discount and *** paid the discounted amount in full of $988.25 on 12/13/13. The U.S. Career Institute website states on the military web page *Military tuition discount may not be combined with other discount offers.

The biggest advantage is the military personnel does not need to pay in full to get a 25% discount ($319.75) They can choose monthly payments or pay in full. Non-military students must pay in full to get a discount of $300 if they choose monthly payments no discount is applied.  The total tuition for the program is $1,279.00, the 25% discount was given on ******* account.

Thank you,

Consumer Response: Complaint: *******

I am rejecting this response because:
As you may see in attached document - we thought that 25% discount applies to price "pay in full" thus expected pay somewhere in vicinity of 750 USD. As you may see in explanation by USCI supervisor for someone paying in full there realy is no discount for military spouse, so I do believe this is a total misleading advertisement and "support to military spouses" that in reality doesn't exist. Our "military spouse saving" was about 30 USD on a 1000 USD spent - hence not a 25% discount. As stated by USCI supervisor in response, we set up this over telephone call (that she has listened) and were instructed to sent my military orders so that 25% military spouse discount can be applied - we did this and received whole 30 USD off... Not sure if that is laughable, but more over it is sad.

Regards,
*** ** ******, CPT US Army on behalf of ***** ********* (military spouse)

Business Response: Case ******* - I explained the non-military personel does not get the option of monthly payments they must pay in full to receive a discount. Military personel will get the discount if they choose montly payments or pay in full and it is a larger discount than a pay in full. However, considering this complaint, I am going to waive another 25% off tuition and refund $244.75 in addition to the $300 discount already received . Ms *********** total tuition for the Medical Assistant Program is now $734.25 which is a total discount of $544.75. A special consideration was made on Ms *********** school account. Please allow up to 30 days for a refund to be processed.

Complaint: The U.S. Career Institute Success PromiseSM"We are so confident that our certificate and degree programs are the most dependable and effective way for you to learn and start a new career, that we give you our Success PromiseSM: When you complete your course and our Success PromiseSM program, you will get a job within six months or we will give you all of your money back. You have our word." This is what they say on their website. But this is only if you make an 85% GPA or Above and only if you pay at 1/2 of the Tuition Fee. I did finish with a GPA of 96%, but by the time I paid 1/2 of the Tuition Fee, it was to late to take the Success Promise Program. I have contacted them to get help on this but they called me undisciplined and then told me to take my local phone directory and write down all the doctors and hospitals. Call 25 at a time until I either ran out of people to call or I was hired. I have contacted several local doctor's offices only to have them tell me they do not hire people to work from their homes. Nor are they hiring new people in their offices. It has been more than 6 months with no job, no leads and no help from them.I cannot afford to still keep paying them.

Desired Settlement: I would like to have a refund and not have this put on my credit report.

Business Response: Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Case #9904346. Ms ***** enrolled in the Medical Claims and Billing program on 7/27/12. Ms ***** signed up for the optional Success Promise program on 12/10/12. When a student signs up for program, the guidelines read a student must complete the course within 12 months, have paid 50% of tuition and have a final GPA of 85%. Ms ***** final assignment was posted on her school records 1/8/13, at that time Ms ***** was eligible to start the Success Promise. Ms ***** completed none of the post-graduation Success Promise steps to enroll in GE200, to get started. If a student meets the requirements to enroll in Success Promise and completes all of the steps during the 6 month program, they may be eligible for a refund if they do not find employment at the end of 6 months. It is an optional program and is free to those who wish to participate. It is an intensive program that covers all aspects of marketing a new career. The student must meet all of the program objectives on time or they are not eligible.

Ms ***** did not enroll in class to get started in the Success Promise's first class and therefore is not eligible for a refund. I will be willing to waive the balance due of $482 on her account and the money she has paid to date of $1073.50 will cover 100% of the Medical Claims and Billing program she graduated from. We will close her account as paid. She may also seek the assistance of our graduate counseling program.

We wish Ms ***** the best of luck in her future endeavors.

Complaint: I went to a seminar last year and paid $55 to enroll in a online class with At-home professions, I almost completed to first course but didn't because I felt that I was learning nothing. I sent emails on top of emails and never got any replies also each time I called the 800 number it stated that my wait time would be approximately 10 minutes. I have been called several times from a collection agency stating that i owe a debt and they will continue to call, so today I called at-home professions and waited the 10 minutes to talk to them, and they stated that I was still enrolled, and haven't completed an assignment since April of last year and them just now un-enrolling me after me having to call and find out whats going on. The guy in student services stated that I still had to pay three hundered and some odd dollars to get it taken care.I don't think I should have to pay them when clearly I was mis-lead at the seminar I attended, and didn't even complete course 1. I would recommend them to no one. A local college would be 100% better, and cheaper also!

Desired Settlement: I would just like them to take me to a ZERO balance and not have to pay for something that I didn't even benefit from.

Mr. **** enrolled in the Healthcare Document Specialist program on 5/15/13. A student

made one payment on his account and his next payment declined. After several unsuccessful
attempts to collect payments Mr. ****’s account was moved to an outside

The notes on Mr. ****’s account indicate his only contact to the school to request
cancelling his account was 1/16/14. The student services representative
explained the cancellation process during this call. A student is obligated for
the material received and a registration fee as outlined on the enrollment

waiving the balance due for Course 2; Mr. ****’s cancellation is based on the

I am rejecting this response because: when you email instructors to get help with questions or student services you got nothing. Despite what their records show I have made several calls to the student services center and never received any response from anyone it always said your estimated wAit time is 10 minutesi I'd wait the 10 minutes and still no one answered. Honestly who has time to stay on a phone and just listen to some sounds while waiting on someone to answer the phone. I don't think it's right that I have to pay for someone that I could never even get assistance with. So therefore if they would have answered all the calls and assisted me I would be more than happy to pay it but it was an all together unpleasant experience.

Complaint: I paid for a bookkeeping specialist course through us career institute. I saw their course covered "computerized bookkeeping programs" in their training. when in reality it more or less referred the student to tutorials from the bookkeeping or accounting program of choice.... did not really teach anything about the computerized bookkeeping. once I completed the course I found their course does not prepare one for bookkeeping or accounting jobs in todays job market as it did not cover or teach any computerized form of it. all jobs in the bookkeeping or accounting fields require computerized skills. us career institute mislead in their course outline- it says computerized programs for bookkeeping as part of the training but by the time the student gets to that to discover its just a few pages and more or less they have spend more money elsewhere when they could have saved themselves the money and spent it on one course through the bookkeeping or accounting program of choice. for example I just had to pay over 700 dollars to intuit quickbooks to get the training for what jobs require today- instead us career institute needs to add a disclaimer or to their course outline by removing the computerized course chapter and perhaps suggesting the student also may find that training elsewhere. instead of misleading a student to think they will learn what they need to know to get the bookkeeping jobs or accounting jobs in todays job market. everything is computerized today no matter what size the company or business. nothing is done by hand anymore. unfortunately this makes this course null and void if us career institute were to be honest. it does not cover computerized bookkeeping or accounting at all. and by my observation is overpriced if does not include such training. this was huge reason I chose us career institute as their course outline showed they covered computerized accounting or computerized bookkeeping programs. which it did not. I am currently studying elsewhere for computerized accounting

Desired Settlement: the cost of training for my computerized program of choice being intuit is $700, it exceeds that of the cost of the bookkeeping course by about $150. I also had to purchase the program. as this was a huge reason I took course through the us career institute I would like atleast $400 refund for their false misleading course outline which resulted in my having to spend more to do what their school site claimed to do- prepare me for a new career as bookkeeper or accountant at entry level.

Business Response: Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Complaint #*******. Ms ****** ****** enolled in the Bookkeeping Program on January 1/3/13 and graduated on 6/17/13, with a final GPA of 82%. Ms ****** also enrolled in our Success Promise Program on 1/3/13, which is an optional program at no cost to graduates who want additional training for their job search. To be eligible to participate in the Success Promise Program a graduate must complete their studies with a final GPA of 85%. After completing the Success Promise program, if a graduate does not end up with a job after 6 months they are eligible for a refund. Ms ****** received a final GPA of 82% and therefore was not eligible to participate in the Success Promise program or receive a refund.

At the time of enrollment, Ms ****** received a "Course Outline" as mentioned in the complaint. In Pack 4, Lesson 16, there is a lesson called Computerized Bookkeeping. It is a lesson discussing the various softwares used in bookkeeping and their use. The description reads: Explore the various types of bookkeeping software available and learn a brief overview of their uses. Discover how bookkeeping concepts are applied in software packages, as well as how bookkeeping professionals use spreadsheets.

There is no mention of using a software program to do your studies in the outline. At the time of enrollment, students are also given a 7-day risk free review period to determine if the program is a good fit for them. If they determine it's not they can return the course without any financial obligation. Ms ****** did not take advantage of this free trial period.

According to the enrollment agreement, school catalog and 100% completion of the program, Ms ****** is responsible for 100% of her tuition. Ms ****** received a discount of $172.25 towards her tuition and has paid $533.25 which meets her financial obligation. According to school policies outlined in the information Ms ****** received she is not eligible for a refund.

Desired Settlement: I would like for the school to submit the correct ******* form which certifies her eligibility of enrollment and also for the school to receive funds.

Business Response: Thank you for the opportunity to respond. When a student enrolls using VA benefits they are required to submit three documents to set-up
enrollment for payment. Following are the documents needed:
1.       Student Application - which the student submits directly to the VA
2.       VA Affirmation of Enrollment form - which the student completes and mails to
          the school office
3.       School Enrollment Certification - this is completed when steps 1 &2 are complete.  The school mails both the Affirmation of Enrollment and
the school Enrollment Certification to VA.

The VA has four Regional Processing Offices.  For most schools, claims are processed in the region where the school is located.
THE EXCEPTION is on correspondence programs which is the type of school USCI falls under.  Claims for correspondence programs are processed at the Regional Office based on the STUDENT
address. USCI is located in the *** ***** Region. ******** ***** lives in the Buffalo Region. Catrecia’s online VA application was submitted (by her) and was incorrectly receieved by the VA and sent
to the *** ***** VA office for processing.

USCI submitted the school Enrollment Certification and the Affirmation of Enrollment to the Buffalo office for processing on 9/23/13.  VA processing time is 6-8 weeks.

On 11/5/13, the student requested that we send our paperwork to the *** ***** VA office.  U.S. Career Institute's VA representative; ******** Briggle, called the VA and confirmed that they had the

This situation is, unfortunately, not uncommon. Neither the school nor the student did anything incorrect.  The VA has so few correspondence programs that sometimes information is not accurately shared and paperwork is delayed. All of the information has been reviewed and straightened out by our VA representative here at USCI and the *** ***** VA representative. ******** Price's information should be at the correct office for processing in the very near future.

Complaint: Mckinley College is a scam; they advertise the cost all together for their program courses are $99 a month. Before I registered with them I specifically ask the person whom I signed up with was there any extra fees or cost associated later on with this program besides the $99 a month she told me NO so I asked if I completed the whole cost in 16 months all I would have to pay is $1600. She said CORRECT. Then I ask about the prices of the tuition fees that I see on the program outlines package that they send you. I was then told that those prices dont apply for the students online thats for the students who actually attend the school physically. So I signed up for two classes for my first semester during the second semester I couldnt enroll because the Board of Education did not send my transcripts in time so I noticed that I was still being billed for the $99 a month automatically from my credit card so I thought it was a mistake because I wasnt attending any classes at the time. So when I called to correct the situation I was then told that I was being billed for the remaining balance that was owed for the two classes that I enrolled in for the first semester which now I was informed came up to a little bit over $1200.00 dollars. I told the supervisor that was not to me before I signed up and that I specifically asked what was all the cost associated with being enrolled online with their school and I was told $99 a month thats it. I told her that I didnt agree to that and it was not told to me before I signed up she told me that I misunderstood what was told to me verbally. I told her to listen to the recorded conversation what was told to me by their staff member and she insisted that I misunderstood and if I didnt pay it will go into collection and appear on my credit report. Mckinley College was very misleading and unethical the way they did not tell the truth about their prices for their online courses.

Desired Settlement: Make my current balance $0 and do not send to the credit collection.

Business Response: Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Case #******* ***** *******.
***** ******* enrolled in the first semester of Human Resources through McKinley College. The following courses were delivered to ***** *******: Entrepreneurship, Business Fundamentals and Intro into Management for a total tuition for these courses of $1,255.98. Payments of $99 are due monthly until the tuition due has been paid in full. ***** ******* has paid to date $426.98 of the $1255.98 currently due for the three courses leaving a tuition balance due of $829.00. ***** ******* requested to cancel the program on 11/6/13. The student is responsible for the courses received according to the school catalog and enrollment agreement. After a complete review of the student's account and the complaint request I am going to make an exception and cancel the account and waive the balance due of $829.00. The account is cancelled, the student no longer needs to submit any lessons and the amount owed is zero. No further action needs to be taken.

Best of luck in future endeavors.

Additional Notes

Complaint: As a stay at home mom I saw this online school as an opportunity to gain the skills necessary to work from home. Upon completion of their Medical Billing and Claims program I was unable to gain employment as the majority of companies that hire for this occupation do not hire people to work from home nor do they hire inexperienced people. In their advertisement they state that they provide you with a certification that allows you to work from home and that this training is necessary in order to gain this type of occupation. It is not required to be certified in medical billing and claims to work in this field. I feel this organization is a scam to trick mothers in to buying education that does not deliver what is promised.

Desired Settlement: In addition to the money refunded paid to this institution I want this item removed from my credit report.

Business Response: Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Case # ******* ***** ***** **************. Ms ******* enrolled 1/26/2011 and made on payment toward her tuition. Ms ******* completed 100% of her studies submitting her last assignment on 5/2/2011. Collection efforts started for the past due tuition on 3/14/2011 and continued to 5/20/2011 and when U.S. Career Institute was unsuccessful in collecting the past due tuition, Ms ********* account was transferred over to an outside collection agency.

According to the "Student Protection Policy" stated on the enrollment agreement and in the student catalog it outlines the refund policy. Because Ms ******* completed 100% of her studies she is responsible for 100% of her tuition. The balance due on Ms ********* account is $1,174.00, I would be willing to make an exception and waive $500.00 of the balance due to settle the account leaving a balance due of $674.00. Once a payment of $674.00 is received I will put in a request to stop collection efforts.

It is true you do not need to be certified to be a medical biller but you do need the training to do the job. Our medical billing program provides the training and graduates receive a certificate of completion, not certification. It is optional if the graduate wants to pursue certification. Ms ******* did a great job on her studies earning a high GPA, I would encourage her to talk with our graduate services department to learn about more options to market her medical billing skills.

Thank you,

Consumer Response: Complaint: *******

I am rejecting this response because:what I was just told is no where in their ad. I feel like this "school" preys on pregnant woman and new moms. If I'd known this course is not needed to get a job I would not have taken it. The ad also states you work from home which is not true. you have to work in an office first which is not stated anywhere. I will not pay for a program that hides the truth. Career services there was a small pamphlet that said steps to a career there was nothing else.

Complaint: I attended a seminar in **********, Arkansas for At Home Professions for Medical Transcription. In the seminar I was told that medical transcription was an up and coming career and that medical transcriptionist were going to be in demand. I was also told that At Home Professions would also help with job placement. I enrolled, I paid in full for as each course section was due. I graduated and received a certificate. I started to apply for jobs. No company will hire a brand new medical transcriptionist or they do not have a medical transcriptionist position available because transcription is dwindling and I have had some company's say that they do not want graduates from At Home Profession. I have called At Home Professions and have left several messages looking for assistance and the only call I received back was one telling me to leave specific information in order for them to help. I called 2 to 3 additional times leaving the specific information that they required and I have not heard back from the graduate services. I received a survey in the mail, I filled it out and sent it back outlining my grievances and I have still not heard from the school it is like they have disappeared. I spent $2500.00 on the course because I was wanting to improve myself, get a better job to help provide better for my family and here I am 5 months later with no prospect of a job.

Desired Settlement: I feel that At Home Professions should refund me money, and I feel that they should be held accountable for what they promise and I to make sure that this does not happen to someone else who is looking to better themselves. I can only imagine how many unsuspecting people they have taken advantage of and it needs to stop. Thank you for your time and attention in this matter. Ms ***** enrolled 5/4/2011 and completed her studies on 5/17/13. At -Home Professions offers a Success Promise Program, which outlines a student must complete the program within a year and sign up for a start date within three weeks after graduation. Ms ***** did not meet these guidelines and was not eligible for the program. The program offers a 6 month intensive course on how to write a resume, coverletter, how to market yourself and marketing techniques and if a student does not find employment or an internship at the end of 6 months they are eligible for a refund. I will make a exception in Ms ***** case and offer enrollment into our Success Promise Program to help her with her job search. We do not offer job placement as stated on the enrollment agreement and in the school catalog under the Student Services Section is reads; "While graduate support and career counseling is provided , it is understood that the school does not provide placement services and cannot promise or guarantee employment to any student or graduate."

Complaint: I enrolled in the Medical Billing and Medical Coding curriculum at U.S. Careers Institute in December 2012. Student Services told me they would give me a discount if I allowed them to debit my checking account monthly. So I did. They started debiting my account in January 2013. for the amount of $59.00. After starting the course I decided that I only wanted to do the Medical Coding only. So I got it approved thru ******** assistant Vice President I was told through a phone conversation and email. I spoke with her on the phone and she also sent me an email stating that I would only be billed 720.00 for the medical coding portion only. I graduated in July 2013 and received a certificate in Medical Coding. I have been paying monthly 59.00 every month since January 2013. So far I have paid $590.00 and should owe only $130.00. They say I owe $380.24. I spoke with ****** which would not allow me to speak with ******** or *** ****. Even though I have spoken with them before. They claim students are not allowed to speak with them or send them an email. I just wanted to speak with the person that I have been conversing with in the past. I have never dealt with such an unprofessional business before. This behavior is so shady and unprofessional. I spoke with three different people ******, ***** and ***** and they would not transfer me to the voicemails of *** **** or **********. They were very rude and unprofessional. I just want to pay my balance of $130.00 and be done. Also when I was taking the course my instructor told the student that we would get $5.00 for every test we took during a certain time frame. We would be receiving the check in the mail after we graduated. Well, I never received my check and now they are saying that because I did not do the Billing portion they may not honor this offerI also requested that my checking not be debited anymore as of today October 25, 2013. They said they would send me an email stating they would honor my request and I have not received an email yet.

Desired Settlement: I want to pay the difference of $720.00 and 590.00 which would be $130.00. They are denying this offer.********** ** ******

Business Response: Thank you for opportunity to respond to Case #*******. Ms ****** automatic payments have been turned off, effective October 25, 2013. Student records show we spoke with you in April on two separate occasions regarding your request to only complete the coding portion of the program. We considered your request and discussed that once you were complete with Quiz 26, you would be done with the coding portion. We asked that you notify us once the grade was posted, at which time we would provide you with a Medical Coding certificate.

It was explained that the tuition obligation would be adjusted at that time to reflect completion of the coding portion, which accounts for 71 percent of the course work. The original tuition cost for the Medical Coding and Billing course is $1,769, in addition to the $16.50 shipping charge, and the $59 technology charge, for a total cost of $1,844.50. When you completed Quiz 26 in July, the obligation was adjusted from $1,844.50 to $1,374.99. The remaining balance at that time was $616.24. Since July, you have paid four more payments of $59, which leaves a balance of $380.24 due. In addition, you had asked about the Rewards Club bonus. By normal policy, students are not eligible for this bonus unless their account balance is paid in full. We went ahead and evaluated your account: you qualify for a total of seven quizzes at $5 each, for a total of $35 Rewards Club. We have deducted this amount from your balance due, which brings the balance down to $345.24.

Taking into consideration your request and the notes on the account I am going to waive the balance due of $345.24 and no more payments are due on the account as of today October 30, 2013. I have cancelled your account and your balance due is zero. No further payments or action is required on the account.

Thank you,

Complaint: I enrolled in At Home Professions in May 2011. I only attended a couple of months and then contacted them that I would be withdrawing. I was paying $50.00/month. I was contacted by collection agency that I had to pay for the remaining monies. I was paying 106.00 a month until May of 2013 at which time they said I was done. In Sept of 2013 I just received a bill saying I owed $232.00. When I called the school they said they show that the last time I spoke them was in 2011, but they have no documentation of me withdrawing. Since 2011 until now, I have had no kind of contact with them, I haven't turned in any type of assignments, have not received anything in the last 2 years. According to the collection agency I have paid them $1497.00. The lady at At Home Professions said that they would refund me $266.00 since I withdrew today(9-27-13). I was with them 5 months if that long. I feel they owe me more that $266.00 when I have paid them $1497. for nothing. They should look at the last contact and figure out how much of $1497 that they owe me.

Desired Settlement: I have paid them $1497. They say last contact with me was in 2011. Last assignment submitted was in 2011. They owe me more than $266.

Business Response:

Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Case #*******. Ms ***** enrolled on 5/9/2011. Upon enrollment the school offers a 7-day review period so the student can evaluate if the course is a good fit for them with out any financial obligation. Ms ***** did not take advantage of this offer and went on to order Courses 1-3 and completed 30% of her program. Ms ***** third monthly payment declined on 7/1/2011 and then Ms ***** had several successful payments; however, payments were declined again on 12/1/12 which continued in the following months. After unsuccessful efforts to collect the delinquent payments Ms ***** account was turned over to an outside collection agency. From the time of enrollment we spoke with Ms ***** on 6/23/11 and during this courtesy call there is no mention of desire to cancel. Collection efforts started on June 25,2012, Ms ***** did not respond to our calls or letter so account was moved to an outside agency. The next conversation occurred on 9/27/13 when Ms ***** requested during the converation to cancel her program. The cancellation policy is based on the amount of studies completed not on length of time enrolled. The student services representative explained to Ms ***** the cancellation policy.  It was also discussed that with the amount of payments made to the collection agency and if Ms ***** cancelled her account she would receive a refund of $232.40. A refund check was issued on 10/18/13. . Once a student is beyond the 7-day review period the cancellation policy follows the guideline stated on the enrollment agreement and in the school catalog provided upon enrollment. Ms ***** is reponsible for the payments made on the account in the amount of $1073.00 and is eligble for the refund of $232.40. The account is cancelled, the amount paid meets Ms ***** financial obligation outlined in her program, no further action is required, no futher instructor or graduate support will be available.

We wish Ms ***** the best of luck in her future endeavors.

Thank you,

Consumer Response: Complaint: *******

I am rejecting this response because: Their statement is not correct.  I called and withdrew from this course within 3 months, but they state they have no documentation of this.  Can they show when I turned in my last assignments.  I understand that at this point it is my word against theirs.  I will try to find documentation regarding this issued.  But, no I am not satisfied with a $200. refund.  Why would they refund anything if I owed them anything.

Regards,

**** ****

Business Response:

In response to Case # ******* **** ***** - Ms ***** completed 30% of her course, cancellation policies are calculated on how much of the program was completed not how long a student is enrolled. The last quiz Ms ***** submitted was Quiz 12, on 11/11/2011. I will put a grade statement in the mail to Ms ***** to verify her academic records. Ms ***** can also go online and look at her student account at: at-homeprofessions.edu and log in to student account.

The reason a refund of $232.40 was issued is due to the cancellation policy on lessons completed not on time. The amount paid on the account covers the course completed, the administration of the account and instructional support.

Thank you,

Complaint: At the beginning of the year I paid off my student loans in full. I had some health issues so I wasn't doing my courses. Today I tried to get back into my account and continue my courses and couldn't so I called the student services line for help. Told me that my account was canceled when I payed it off and if I wanted to continue my education I had to again start payments. I do nt believe I should have to pay again for this when ive already paid in full I should be able to finish my classes. If I am not able to finish my classes then I believe I should get my money back considering I did not get the services I paid for.

Desired Settlement: Either a refund or the ability to continue my education without having to pay again.

Business Response:

Thank you for the opportunity to respond to complaint # *******. U.S. Career Institute offers a 7-day review period for students to review the material to make sure the program is a good fit for them. If a student cancels the enrollment within the review period all tuition due is waived.  Ms ******** ****** enrolled March 21, 2011 and did not return her material or cancel her account. Her first tuition payment declined and no attempts were made to contact the school. After  unsuccessful collection efforts, Ms ******** account was turned over to an outside collection agency. On February 14, 2012, Ms ****** agreed to a reduced payment of $789.30 with the collection agency to settle the debt on her account. Ms ******** account was cancelled and removed from any further collection efforts at that time.

Ms ******** account is currently cancelled and marked reduced settlement payment received. If Ms ****** would like to re-enroll in her studies she would need to pay the difference from the reduced settlement payment to the tuition balance due of $489.70 on the account.  If Ms ****** would like to re-enroll, I would waive the balance due of $489.70 and charge a material fee of $150.00 at time of re-enrollment. Ms ****** enrolled in 2011 and many things have changed since her enrollment and she would need updated course material with electronic textbook delivery.  If Ms ****** would like to re-enroll with a fee of $150.00 and receive 2013 course material, then she will need to contact the Student Services Assistant Manager, at ************** to get her account reinstated.

Complaint: The seminar I attended about becoming an at home Medical Transcriptionist was totally misleading. She gave us the impression that after completing the course one would be qualified to be a Medical Transcriptionist. This is not true. It seems that you need to take a test to become certified. This was not mentioned. I checked them on the Better Business Bureau site, but I admit I did not check into a lot of information about Medical Transcriptionists until I was well into the course (turns out only 1% growth expected in the next 10 years). At the seminar it was mentioned that two sisters completed the course in just two months.I have a master's degree in teaching and this is impossible!! There are five courses and the last three courses require over 300 hours of work by their discription. Even if you didn't sleep that would not be possible. She also said that the medical profession is growing (a true statement) and that many more medical transcriptionists would be needed. I have encountered many that are laid off and a relative is a doctor and he needs to enter everything in the computer during or right after an appointment(no need for an MT). I have also heard that it's not a good idea to do it at home because there is no one you can ask for help. The seminar implied that you work at your leisure in your own home. There are strict deadlines. Those working in offices typically work 2nd or 3rd shift, something I have no desire to do. I'm an intelligent and diligent person. I do not feel as though I'm prepared to do this professionally after taking the course. I do feel that I was scammed and was taken advantage of. I was laid off so it cost me money I did not have to waste. The success promise (if you complete it and can't find a job you get your money back) was a joke. Lots of busy work and many times you didn't know what needed to be done until you opened the assignment. Once opened you had to complete and submit. It's clear they figure you won't finish. I am thoroughly disappointed.

Desired Settlement: I would like a good percentage of my money refunded. It's clear that I will not find a job as a Medical Transcriptionist. There aren't many jobs out there, in my town they are laying MTs off. Any jobs that are available want at least two years experience. I tried doing the success promise and all that did was show me that this is not a growing profession and I'm better suited to do other things. It was lots of busy work and I decided I really had better things that I had to do.

Business Response:

Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Case #*******. Ms ***** ******** enrolled in the Medical Transcription and Editing program on 2/8/12 and graduated 5/8/13. During the course of Ms ********** studies there is no mention in the school records of her concern regarding the career training. On 8/19/13, Ms ******** was enrolled in the Success Promise program to begin the intensive program how to write resumes, cover letters, create marketing materials, practice interview questions, and how to go about a job search. The Success Promise program is an optional risk-free program available to students. A student must meet all the program guidelines to successfully complete the program. If a student successfully completes the program and does not find a job, then the student is eligible for a refund. While we do not offer job placement, this program is a great resource how to market your new skills. Ms ******** was dismissed from the Success Promise Program several weeks after she started due to a missed assignment therefor not elgible for a refund. If a student does not want to participate in the Success Promise program, our graduate services department is always available for assistance.  In our school catalog and stated on the enrollment agreement is our student protection policy which provides the information regarding refunds.

It is not a requirement to be certified, in fact some certifying agencies recommend several years of work experience before sitting for the exam. Graduates can choose to pursue the option to further their education to include certification. A transcriptionist's schedule will vary depending if you are working for a service or have clients of your own.  Ms ******** has completed 100% of her studies and owes a balance due of $288.00. She is responsible for 100% of her program, for the instructional support and administrative costs associated with the program. What I can do for Ms ******** is waive the balance due of $288.00, mark the account paid in full., no further payments will be required. I encourage Ms ******** to seek assistance with our graduate counseling department to learn more about how to market her new skill at ************* *** ****.

Complaint: I have been deceived and severely misled by this school. When looking for a school to enroll in, I was looking for a medical transcription program. When I was enrolling in this school, I specifically told the person on the phone that I was looking to enroll in a medical transcription program. The customer service agent told me that what AHP offers is a Billing, coding and medical transcription program because it makes you more marketable. The person never told me that I had any other options. I then registered thinking this was the only choice I had to get into the medical transcription profession. Just recently I spoke with someone who informed me that AHP does in fact have just a medical transcription program. Because I was misinformed and lied to, I have waisted my time and money on a program that I never wanted in the first place. All I ever wanted was to get into medical transcription. I then called the school on Friday to talk to someone about this, because I feel that I should be refunded my money for the courses that I never wanted, but was told I had to take as part of the program. The representative then said that they could take $100 off my bill.....really? The only other options that she offered me were to cancel out of the class now (not receiving any money back), and switch to the medical transcription program, or just finish it out, and keep going. She said that is their policy. I don't want to be a part of this school any longer because they deceived me into taking an extended program that I did not need or want. All I want is a refund for what I have paid out for something that I never asked for in the first place.

Desired Settlement: I want the money back for the part of the program that I was deceived into taking (billing and coding).

Complaint: I chose this online course in medical billing and coding because of their money back guarantee if I was unable to find a job in this field after six months. Their 'guarantee' stated that you must have completed the course within a year with at least an 85%, outlined a plan of action with the school, and have paid half the tuition. I completed the course in four months, with an 87%, and have paid more than half the tuition. The plan of action was in the form of doctor's offices, clinics, and hospitals that refused to hire me, since I have no practical experience. This list I sent to them with an explanation when I stopped the monthly payment, not seeing the need to keep wasting my money. Since then, I have been deluged with "We want our money" letters or "I can offer you a great savings on the rest of your tuition if you pay right now" letters, despite my repeated efforts to make them stop. I don't get the certificate of completion, since I quit paying the tuition, but that doesn't seem to matter much, since, again, no one will hire me because of the lack of experience thing.

Desired Settlement: DesiredSettlementID: Refund I want back the money I paid them already, as per their guarantee. I have spent seven months hunting a job with no success whatsoever.

On 6/7/13, Ms. ****** spoke with our student services department discussing late payments on her account. Ms. ****** requested to cancel her enrollment on 6/24/13. At the time of her cancel request Ms. ****** would have owed $551.00 in tuition. We however, made an exception in her case and waived the balance due on her account. Complaint: I was severely misled on school's accreditation and qualifications. I feel this school has stolen over $6000 and 3 years of my life. I enrolled in the Health Information Technology Associates Degree program with US Career Institute (aka Weston Online University) in April 2010. After looking over their website, I spoke to a student representative to verify that this school was fully accredited. I was told that it indeed is fully accredited across the country. I have found that this is indeed a false statement. I tried to transfer my classes to another university and was told that NONE of my credit hours are transferable from this school. I also learned that I am unable to sit for my RHIT certification exam because this school is not accredited with AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association). I have spent a total of $6,146 in tuition/fees and over 3 years of time and will not be able to use any of it. I had made A's & B's throughout the whole course until the final exam, which I have failed now twice. I was told I could retake it for $234.00. After the second time, I decided not to take the final a third time and requested that they not send me the test in the mail. I received it in the mail and they added another $234.00 to my account. I returned the exam as they stated to do but in the meantime, not only has my account not been credited, but an amount of $59.00 has been deducted from my bank account. I am extremely upset and disappointed in Weston Distance Learning(aka US Career Institute, USCI, At Home Professions, McKinley College). I feel that I have been lied to, mislead and will have to start my pursuit of my degree and RHIT certification all over again. I have wasted thousands of dollars and several years of my life for nothing. Thank you in advance for any help you may provide.

Desired Settlement: I am requesting that I am refunded the total tuition/fees that I have paid to Weston Distance Learning, Inc (US Career Institute) in the amount of $6146.00 so that I may be able to pursue my degree and certification at a school that is accredited with AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association).

Business Response: Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2013/07/19) */ Thank you for the opportunity to respond to **** *****'s complaint. USCI is fully accredited, as outlined in the school catalog. USCI's accreditation status can be viewed on the U.S. Department of Education website at http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation or the accrediting body's website at http://www.detc.org As stated in the catalog issued to Mrs. *****, the acceptance of transfer of academic credits to another institution is determined by the receiving institution. College/institutions individually establish criteria for transfer credit acceptance based on many factors, including but not limited to course content, final grade, credits per course, type of accreditation, age of credits, etc. Courses in U.S. Career Institute's degree programs may or may not transfer to other colleges and depends solely on the receiving institution's criteria and determination. U.S. Career Institute does not imply or guarantee that the transferability of credits from its courses. U.S. Career Institute has formed articulation agreements with several colleges that have agreed to accept transfer credit dependent on various factors, including student performance in our courses. Articulation agreements for this program are in place with Columbia Southern University, Grand Canyon University, American InterContinental University and Kaplan College. Our graduates may sit for AHIMA's CCA certification exam (six months' working experience encouraged before sitting for exam). In addition, graduates can sit for the CPC-A (Apprentice) certification exam. After an additional one year of coding work experience, the A is dropped and the graduate is a CPC. Per the school's Code of Conduct, students agree to never turn in work that is not my own or present another person's ideas or scholarship as my own; never ask for, receive or give unauthorized help on graded assignments, quizzes and examinations; and never use outside books or papers that are not authorized by the directions for my assignments or examinations. Mrs. ***** has failed to follow these guidelines to submit her assignments. Mrs. *****'s instructors have provided detailed information regarding this situation. Mrs. ***** is responsible for the education and training materials she has received. The school is not obligated to refund the tuition per the school's refund policy that was provided to the student at the time of enrollment. Thank you, ***** ********* Director of Education

Complaint: The educational materials provided are out of date and many of the books/tests have errors in them. Instructors are not knowledgeable of the field. My issue is with customer service and quality of content. I signed up for the Medical Assisting Certificate course because I needed to brush up on my clinical skills for my current role as the manager of a home care company. While reading and taking tests for this course I noticed many errors in the content and test formats. The errors range from small editing issues (listing the letter "A" twice in lieu of "B" on multiple choice tests) to having outdated information on health issues and practices (in a chapter on senses it did not list all 5 tastes five basic tastes: sweetness, sourness, saltiness, bitterness, and umami.) I wrote to an instructor to discuss a grade and my concerns with the quality of content on 11-04-2012. She responded by stating that I marked the incorrect answer and therefore I was wrong. She did not address any of my concerns and ignored the fact that I wrote about the logical and accurate answer of the question in my email. The "instructors" of this institution have little to no experience in the courses they are in charge of. When you view the biographies on the website and in the newsletters there is no mention of qualifications higher than a bachelors degree. Further, for a medical assisting course it would be essential that the instructor be a registered nurse in order to provide safe, quality content but this is not the case here. Another issue is the somewhat subtly racist content of the coursework. I don't think this was intentional, however, in the chapter that focuses on communication it clearly states that individuals who used terms such as "axed" in lieu of "asked" would not be viewed as professionals. Subjective content like this provides no service to the reader and does not take into consideration the fact that dialects vary based on location, culture, etc. Lastly, the user interface of their main website is an unfair representation of the website and print materials actually used in the course. While their landing page is very user friendly, once a student logs in the functionality is dramatically different. Quizzes can be submitted online but the format is clunky at best. Also, once admitted to the Success Promise program the user interface changed yet again. The assignments were difficult to find and the instructor emailed nearly 5 times a day to report questions and concerns students had with the UI. Even though I completed all of the assignments I could find by the deadline, I was sent an email stating that I missed assignment 1 and was automatically ejected from the program. It makes very little sense to me that I would be kicked out of a program that is intended to help students succeed for missing a single assignment that I could not find(especially when I put so much time into the other chapters). I wanted to continue with the program (even if I had missed out on the quality back guarantee)just to see if there was anything else I could learn from the course, however, I was not permitted to continue with the course in anyway. I sincerely feel that I was taken advantage of and have wasted my hard earned money on a course that was falsely advertised to me.

Desired Settlement: I would like my tuition refunded to me.

Business Response: Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2013/06/20) */ Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Case #XXXXXXXX. Our school offers lifetime graduate assistance to graduates or another option is our Success Promise Program. The Success Promise program is a time sensitive curriculum where students agree to meet weekly due dates. There is no charge to the student to participate in the program. If the student does not submit their assignments on the dates due they are dismissed from the program; however, the student will still have access available to the graduate counselors. Ms. ****** was dismissed from the Success Promise program on May 5, 2013. Ms. ****** did not submit any assignment to her teacher for grading. She only completed practice exercises 1.1 - 2.3. U.S. Career Institute has decided to make an exception in Ms. ******'s case and let her re-enroll in the Success Promise to meet the program's objective of successfully completing the program and finding employment. Complaint: I tried to go to a community college after this program because it was so bad and I was told that it was a scam and the certificate was just paper. I was enrolled in the at home professions program for medical transcription and realized right away it was not a quality program. Teachers sent me contradicting information when grading, sometimes did not respond to me emails and the accents of the people dictating were horrible. I was trying to finish this program to work from home since I was pregnant. I was so frustrated by the program and lack of help I was getting I decided to switch to a community college to take the same program. In my first transcriptioning class at the CC I realized everything I learned was outdated. The formats were all wrong and a lot of the grammatical things were incorrect. I talked with the admissions lady at the college and she told me this program was a scam and the diploma was nothing but an expensive peice of paper. I lost all of my papers and book from the school during a move and I'm not even sure of my number to get on the website and have not been up to date on my payments. It was then turned over to a collection agency who has been bothering me for sometime now. I have no way of paying for it since I now am a stay at home mom and can't afford daycare to go out of the home to work and I don't think I should have to I got nothing from this program except wasting several months of my time thinking I could get a real job from home. Now it's effecting my credit score as well and making it impossible for me to get a loan to back to school for something else. I will definitly not recommend this program to anyone.

Desired Settlement: Make my current balance $0 and remove from my credit and from the collection agency.

Business Response: Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2013/06/05) */ Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Case #XXXXXXXX. Mrs. ******* enrolled in the Medical Transcription Program October 26, 2010. Her last successful payment was made on May 29, 2012. An audit was performed of past due accounts and Mrs.********'s account was identified as delinquent. Mrs. ******** was mailed a notice that her account was delinquent. A fourteen day notice was given to remit the past due amount or make payment arrangments otherwise the account was going to be sent to collections. Mrs. ********'s account was sent to collections on April 15, 2013. After review of this case and the desired resolution the school is going to make an exception and waive the balance due on Mrs, ********'s school account. The school will waive $1,495.00, remove the account from collections, cancel the account and no further action is required by Mrs. ********. Tuition paid to date will satisfy any financial obligation for the material, instruction and administrative costs received. Please allow up to 30 days for collection efforts to stop. Complaint: I was charged an additional 50 dollars after I paid my account in full based on their billing error and then turned in to collections. I paid my entire account balance off in early 2012, and months later was contacted by their billing department and told they had made a billing error in Dec. of 2011 and that I still owed 50 dollars. My records showed that everything had been paid, but they insisted it had not. I was turned into collections so I paid the 50 dollars. I just feel they have very poor billing practices and take advantage of people who are trying to futher their education in a affordable way.

Desired Settlement: I would like the fifty dollars refunded if possible and my account cleared.

Complaint: I took a course that said would ready me for a certification exam, which it did not. I have not been able to get a refund either. I took a Medical Coding and Billing course here, and found it to be equivalent to the first course in a "normal" Medical Billing and coding course. The material did not in any way ready me for the certification exam and was a complete waste of time and money. Also, I have not received a refund of my money spent from this institution. It's not worth it, being that now I have to complete a 2 year degree at a community college and have to pay out of pocket for that too.

Desired Settlement: I wish to receive the amount I paid regarding the Medical coding and billing course. I also paid for the excessories for this course which I would like to be refunded as well.

Business Response: Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2013/05/02) */ Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Case #46031305 for Mrs JoAnn ****. After careful review of Mrs. ****'s student records, I do not see where she worked with our graduate counselors regarding how to seek a job and/or information on certifications. Beginning March 2, 2012, Mrs. **** called regarding a payment that had declined. A student services representative talked with Mrs. **** again on 4/5/12, encouraging her to call graduate services for assistance and gave her the contact information. More issues with past due payments came up on October 22, 2012, Mrs. **** was given a grace period so she didn't have to make a payment until November 20, 2012. Again on February 21,2013, another grace period was given to Mrs. **** and she stated would pay rhe past due balance on her account with her tax refund. Only once during the course of multiple conversations did Mrs. **** ask about cancelling her program. At that time she was provided the cancel balance due. No further action was taken to cancel and no payment was received to cancel the account. The account was kept active and the student graduated 2/28/12. A final payment was made on the account March 15,2013. Seeking certification is not required, it is an option for those who wish to pursue certification beyond their academic training. You do not need a certification to do Medical Billing and if a person wishes to pursue certification in Coding it is reccommended to gain some work experience before sitting for the exam. Our course equals one year of a two year work requirement to sit for the CPC exam. I would encourage Mrs. **** to work with our graduate counseling office to learn more about certifications and how to market her new skills. She can contact them at ***********************. Complaint: They do not have instructors that help you, you have to figure everything out on your own and can not get jobs with these degrees I am currently enrolled in Mckinley Online College, I am 2 classes away from graduating, I.have done pretty well throughout the courses until the one I am in now. I have failed it once this is the second time I am taking it, in the beginning of this course my computer.froze on a quiz, well when I went back on to look at it every single one of n quizzes and exams had zeros, this was odd so I contacted my teacher about it, she said she would reset my exams for me, well when I tried to take my third exam I looked and my teacher had not reset it. When I asked her about it she had to contact the.school, they are now saying that it can not be reset because I have had to many requests to reset exams, well you clearly see that it said I have a zero for the exam in january, it is now march, they will not do a thing which if I get a zero makes me fail the course again. I have not had any issues.until I got close to.graduation, I honestly believe that they are doing everything so that I do not graduate, it ensures them that they get more money out of me each month. Along with that me and every single person in my class has had an issue with the.instructor, I have made so many complaints against this teacher and the school refuses to look into it. How are we supposed to get a good education when the instructor just will not help at all? And the school will not help... Even more issues is that I have called doctors offices and hospitals in the.area none of them will.accept this college, they say they are accredited but you have.to.check in your area who will take you. I believe this is false advertising, I think they are getting away with taking a lot of peoples money .I.totally regret ever being involved with this school, anybody should.really think twice before enrolling with this school.

Desired Settlement: I would like full refund for my time, I am pregnant I have wasted so.much.time with this school that just will not help with my issues or any of my classmates issues

Business Response: Consumer Response /* (-5, 5, 2013/03/06) */ I was also told when I signed up for this school that you are certified and you get an associates degree, I am in the medical specialties course, I was told I would get certified but now I am hearing from other students that it is not what happens, all you get is a certificate of completion, so the person that I talked to and who registered me in this school lied, I just wasted a year of my time for nothing, O am disgusted in learning that you really do not get certified, they should have in their records who I spoke with, I would.suggest that any students trying to do online classes, do not use mckinley college it is a.scam, they tell you what you want to hear and then later you are screwed. I want a full refund, you had false advertisement, you lied, and you will not look into.the many complaints I have made about a certain unhelpful teacher, this school is not worth the stress of dealing with I have wasted so much time for absolutely nothing, I will not be certified and will not have an associates degree, you lied I want a refund. Business Response /* (1000, 6, 2013/03/14) */ Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Case #XXXXXXXX.In looking over the notes on Mrs. ****** ******'s school record it is noted the instruction staff has been asked 28 times for various reasons to reset the tests for Mrs. ****** ******. When an assignment is submitted, it is automatically graded and an answer key is provided to the student so they can review their incorrect answers. When the student requests a reset, they have access to the correct answers. Per DETC standards, we must safeguard our answers. Multiple reset requests are a red flag that answers have been compromised with a particular student. We have contacted Mrs. ****** ****** and due to the excessive reset requests the school explained we cannot reset any future assignments for her. Taking this complaint into consideration and the history on the school records I am going to cancel Mrs.******'s ****** school account as it appears this is no longer a good fit for her or the school. As of March 14, 2013, Mrs ******'s school account will be cancelled, a refund in the amount of $2,756.80 will issued be for tuition paid by Mrs.******. Please allow up to 30 business days for the refund to be received. No further action on Mrs. ****** account is required. We wish Mrs. ****** the best of luck in her future endeavors. Complaint: Advertisement misrepresented a their service. CSR advised that an at-home profession was legitimate after course completion, which is not realistic. I spoke with a CSR regarding an at-home medical billing and coding profession. They falsley claim that starting an at-home business after completing course would be something legitimate when in reality, employers will not hire unless you have on-hand job experience which is at least 2-3 years. I again spoke with representative on numerous occasions and they gauraunteed that job-placement assistance would be available and that they also were AHDI approved, which is not true. I contacted Customer Service in Feb. 2013 and was told that they could cancel the course but that I would owe $1500 for cancellation fees. This company falsley claims at-home professions which is 100% misleading/

Complaint: they give false hope saying you can work from home but really that is not the case. they give pregnant women and new mothers false hope. the ad is placed in a baby magazine stating work at home when after completing the course I found out, first you don't need to take a course to become a medical claim specialist, second in order to work from home you have to be employed for an extended amount of time, and third most places now you have to have three years experience to get hired. Complaint: They offer a money back guarantee that is impossible to achieve. I had recieved information about this school through my doctor for a work at home career, which sounded great being 3 months pregnant. I requested the infomation and everywhere they had a money back guarantee which sounded great. Plus it said it was only 5 dollars to enroll, which was not true I had to pay 80.50. But I took a chance and enrolled in the school anyways. I found out that you have to sign up for this other class for the money back guarantee and your tutition had to be atleast paid off in half. If you use their finacial aid and make monthly payments it will take 15 months to pay half of it off. Then you can't get your certificate until the class is paid in full, then you can start looking for a job. It took me only 2 months to complete this class and I can't do anything with the knowledge because I can't afford to pay in for or even get half of it paid. Basiclly if you can't afford to pay for it in full the guarantee does not apply to you.

Desired Settlement: I would like to recieve a full refund in the amount of 257.50 and not be charged anymore for this class.

Business Response: Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2012/12/11) */ Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Case XXXXXXXX. Ms ****** completed her studies on 9/7/12, she has paid $257.50 of her tuition balance of $1539.00. Ms ****** is correct in saying the guideline to be enrolled in our Success Promise program you need to have an overall GPA of 85% or higher and have paid half of the certificate tuition balance to enroll in the online program. The program outline states the requirements before signing up and is optional. If a student is unable to commit to the requirements of the program we do offer lifetime graduate assistance through our graduate services department. In addition each certificate program comes with a Career Starter book in the last pack of material. This book goes over resumes, cover letters, where to market your new skills, etc. Ms ****** is eligible to take advantage of our graduate services. We typically do not release the certificate of completion until a student's financial obligation has been met. I am going to make an exception in Ms ******'s case and issue her graduation certificate. Her certificate should arrive in 10-15 days. Ms ****** is also responsible for the full tuition according to her enrollment agreement and policy provided in the school catalog. However, I am going to waive the balance due on Ms ******'s account of $1,297.00. The amount she has paid to date of $257.50 will satisfiy her financial obligation. No further payments will be required on the account. We wish Ms ****** the best of luck in her future endeavors. Thank you, ****** ****** Director of Student Services Consumer Response /* (3000, 7, 2012/12/12) */ (The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.) I just want a full refund in the amount of 257.50 and not have to keep paying. Having the certificate isn't going to change that there are no jobs in my area for this and the ones that are want 5 or more years experience. I wanted to work from home because I will have a newborn in a few weeks but to actually do that is near impossible places want even more experience for that. This whole class was a waste of time that I could of used to find something that was worth while. Business Response /* (4000, 9, 2012/12/13) */ On 12/11/12, a tuition balance due of $1,297.00 was waived on Ms ******'s account. No payments are due on the account. With this consideration on Ms ******'s account the financial obligation for the material, instruction and administration of the account hsd been satisfied. I do not wish to have the certificate all I want is my money back. Business Response /* (4000, 13, 2012/12/20) */ In response to Case #XXXXXXXX. I have requested a refund of $257.50. In order to do this, I had to provide my debit card # and enroll in a payment plan of $55/month for the course. Upon reviewing the material I decided against participating and returned the contents approximately 2 1/2 weeks later. On October 15th my account was again charged $55. I called the company and was told that if I expected a refund, I had to return the contents within 7 days and because I did not do that not only would I NOT receive any credit, but because I live in the state of Missouri I owed a total of $200 and my account would be charged an additional $45 in November and $55 in December!! During the seminar I was not aware that materials had to be returned within 7 days to receive a credit of my initial $55 payment. In addition to that I RETURNED THE MERCHANDISE TO THEM and they will not refund the 1st installment of $55, OR the 2nd installment of $55 OR stop the additional 2 charges for November and December. I requested a copy of my contract--because I was told it was outlined in my contract that I signed the night of the seminar. I was told the contract could not be emailed or faxed, it had to be mailed. Its been 12 days since I requested the contract, and I have not received it. I called again today (October 22nd) and they said it was mailed on October 15th. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE SCAMMED OUT OF YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY!!

Desired Settlement: I returned the merchandise in its original condition in a VERY TIMELY MANNER and I paid for the shipping to send it back. I expect a FULL REFUND of the $110 I have already been charged (2 months of payments)and I do not expect to be charged an additional $100 for merchandise I dont even have and a program that I am not interested in partipating in!

Business Response: Business Response /* (1000, 7, 2012/11/15) */ Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Case #XXXXXXXX. The seminar presentation goes over the risk free program preview, the 7-day preview is listed in the school catalog that comes with the course materials and it is also noted on the enrollment agreement. The student is obligated to the registration fee if the material is returned outside of the review period. Mr. ******'s material was received 10/26/12 and the box was postmarked 10/10/12. I will go ahead and make an exception in Mr. ******'s case and waive the balance paid on the account of $110.00. A refund will be issued back to the credit card the payment was made. Please allow 15-30 business days for the refund to be issued. The account is cancelled, all money refunded so no more action is required on the account. We wish Mr. ****** the best of luck in his future endeaovors. Thank you, ****** ****** Director of Student Services

Complaint: The company misleads costumers into thinking that they are AHDI aprovved by saying they are affiliated but the AHDI doesn't even affiliate with them. I was misled by Weston Distance Learing or At-home Professions by they're claims of job placement and AHDI approval. My student number is #XXXXXXXX and I enrolled on 3/13/12. The program costs $2,995.00 and was on a payment plan of $55.00 a month. They also never told me I couldn't get my certification untill the full tuition was paid. I was told they were AHDI approved and was promised job placement and they are not. They were contacted by me on October 2, 2012 regarding my complaint as well as requesting a refund. I was told I could not reciev the full refund. I am very un-happy and unsatisfied as they show no compassion. I was told to speak with the director of student services about my complaint for refund. I E-maile him the same day (Oct 2) and I recieved no email back. SO now im resorting the the BBB.

Desired Settlement: I Would like a full refund for the misrepresentation. I have already spent $393.93 dollars and wasted 7 months of my time on a school that completely failed me and let me down. I still owe a total of $1155.99. How can i take any of what i learned into consideration seeind that its not even AHDI approved. The school is a scam. I want a full refund.

Business Response: Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2012/10/19) */ Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Case #XXXXXXXX, Mr. ****** ******. I have reviewed Mr. ******'s account. A student services representative spoke with Mr. ****** and explained we are a member of AHDI. Our students may pursue CMT certification through AHDI if they choose to do so. At-Home Professions has successfully taught students for over 30 years and we are nationally accredited through the DETC. In response to Mr. ******, I am going to cancel his school account at the amount paid which will cover the material and instructional support received and cover administration costs. I will waive the balance due of $1,155.99. The account is cancelled and no further payments or assignments are due. I wish Mr. ****** the best of luck with his future endeavors. Thank you, ****** ****** Director of Student Services

Complaint: Mislead and ripped off by At-home Professions Medical Transcription program. My fiance, Dalton Walker and I enrolled into At-home professions' Medical Transcription program in march of 2012 (March 9th and 13th). Student numbers XXXXXXXX and XXXXXXXX. We heard about it online and contacted them for information. We were told by them that the program cost $2,995.00 and we would be put on a payment plan of $55.00 a month each till it was payed off. We were mislead by them, they told us they were ADHI approved and that they provided job placement. When in reality, they are NOT ADHI approved and they don't provide you with a job after you graduate and it is definitely not guaranteed like what we were tricked into thinking. We also were never told about their policy of not getting our certificate until you are done paying your tuition. We were obviously lied to and extremely mislead by At-Home Professions. We contacted them today, October 2,2012, regarding this complaint and requesting to cancel the program with a full refund. I was let down by both a customer service rep and her supervisor that I was not going to receive a refund. The supervisor did not seem to care that I am a very unhappy, unsatisfied costumer that was completely mislead about the whole program. She stated that since I did sign a contract and I completed the first two courses, I was not entitled to any refund. She said I could either cancel my program and pay my balance of $792.00 or I could try and E-mail the Director of Student Services at *****@at-homeprodessions.edu, and ask them for a refund, which we both did today, October 2, 2012. We are just two very mislead and unhappy costumers that have wasted a lot of time into this and would just like our money back.

Desired Settlement: We would both like our complete money back because this school and this program is a complete ripoff and very misleading. We signed up thinking the complete opposite of what we know now. I know that we signed a contract, but we signed that Ithinking At-Home Professions was a ADHI approved school and that we were guaranteed a job after completion of program. When in reality that is not true. We have wasted more than 7 months on this program and since it is not even ADHI approved, how do I know we were even taught the correct things? If we do pay both of our balances, it will be a total of $2600 or more wasted on this non legitimate , scam of a school. I think the least At-Home Professions could do for us is give us each a full refund, after all that they have lied to us about and all of our wasted time and money.

Business Response: Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2012/10/04) */ Thank you for the opportunity to respond to Case #XXXXXXXX, Ms *********. Ms ********* enrolled 3/9/12, in the Medical Transcription Program. She has completed 15 of 39 quizzes. It was not until 10/2/12, Ms ********* contacted the school regarding employment questions. Ms ********* talked with *****, our Student Services Supervisor. ***** explained AHDI is a certifying agency and it is optional for graduates to seek certification after graduation. We have many graduates who have found employment without being a CMT. We do however, offer a Success Promise and lifetime graduate assistance. Ms ****** mentioned to ***** sduring her 10/2/12 phone call she did not want to participate in the Success Promise as it was too much work. As stated in our School Catalog, the school does not offer grad placement. A school catalog is offered upon enrollment and the student has 7 days to review the material upon enrollment and can cancel at no charge during the review period if the course is not a good fit for them. I have reviewed Ms ******'s account and have made an exception to waive the balance due on her account of $******. The amount paid to date will satisfy her financial obligation for the instructional support, administration fees and course material received. The account is cancelled at no balance due. No further action is required. We wish Ms ****** the best of luck in her future endeavors. Thank you, ****** ****** Director of Student Services
