Additional Notes

Complaint: I am very upset to find out this morning that this bank accounts have been compromised and they failed to notify their customers that this happened. They confirmed this to me on the phone this morning, after we had called because my husband had gone to a store this morning and found out that our card had be shut off. This is absolutely ridiculous that a business of this size could know that this happened in July and make a decision NOT to notify anyone who held their card. While the card may have the mastercard logo on it, they are operating and using that logo so they should have some responsibility to their customers to protect them. There were 4 charges that were made to the account after the 2 they were able to lock it. Here is my problem they allowed the charges to go thru without question, as I stated to them on the phone I find this so perplexing because they usually have a strong security. I have had it questioned when my husband used a atm witin 3 miles of our house but yet they knew that they were compromised and never thought to question $116.00 worth of gas in ******** that is a huge amount of gas and I have certainly never in all my years with this account charged that much. That should of been a warning but they allowed it to go thru? Not once but 2xs in one night? I don't expect anything out of this other that they should be tarnished by this and their inability to protect their customers by not letting them know this happened. ***** and ***** ***** both announced yesterday they were hacked BUT Associated made a conscious decision to ignore the fact that they use the MasterCard name and their customers were at risk, Please warn the public so we can protect ourselves and make businesses have to do the same or face a penalty. Thank you

Desired Settlement: At this point I believe my account will be reimbursed the amounts that were taken....however they take your money out and expect that you have to file all this paperwork to retrieve it....all while they know darn well that these are fraudulent charges...this is fraud by associated bank by not acknowledging this.

Business Response:

I am responding to the complaint you filed with the Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin received August
29,2014 regarding your Associated Bank debit card ending in ****.

Complaint: I opened a checking account with Associated Bank Spring of last year 2014,it was not explained to me clearly how the debt card purchases work. There were about 4-5 purchases made with my debit card. They cleared with the money in my account and then for some reason it said the merchant has 2-4 days to process the payments. This caused me to get overdraft fees for some reason. I tried calling the customer service number and all of the services reps to explain my issue they were very, very rude to me, so I decided to make an appoitment with the Bank manger **** ******, hoping to get some type of resoultion, He was just as rude as the customer service reps. Associated Bank donot value their customers or the issues that occurs with Associated Bank!!

Desired Settlement: DesiredSettlementID: Refund I would like the fees that were not my fault reversed!!!

Dear Ms. *****,
**** **** ****** ******* ******* ****** ** ***** ************ ******** ***** ************ ***
This letter is in response to the complaint that you filed with the Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin
received on May 12, 2014 regarding your checking account ending in 2630. I am sorry to hear of your
disappointment with the servicing of your account and apologize for any frustration you experienced.
I am glad that I had the opportunity to speak with you and resolve your concerns. As we discussed, when
you use your debit card for a purchase, the merchant issues a temporary hold for that amount. The hold
is in effect for the general timeframe when most debit card authorized transactions are received by the
bank and drops off after the actual transaction is processed or the general timeframe expires. Banks do
not have control over the amount of time between obtaining an authorization and when they submit the
transaction for payment.
As we discussed, although the fees assessed to your checking account are valid according to the terms
and conditions of your account, on May 14, 2014 I refunded $70.00 in overdraft fees as a customer
courtesy. Enclosed for your convenience is our Understanding Overdrafts and Your Options to Manage
Fees pamphlet which provides great information on tips to avoid overdrafts.
Also, according to our records, at the time you opened the account you opted-in to the bank's Everyday
Debit/ATM Overdraft Service. This means that Associated Bank will authorize one-time debit card
purchases or ATM withdrawals even if there are no funds available and your account will be charged the
corresponding overdraft fees. However, recurring debit card transactions such as gym memberships or
cell phone payments and non-ATM/Debit Card transactions such as checks, ACH withdrawals, or online
banking/telephone banking transactions may still be paid and subject to overdraft fees
If you would like to Opt Out your account from the Debit/ATM Overdraft Service, or have any other
questions, please contact me at the number above. At Associated Bank, we place a high value on
providing quality service and recognize that customer satisfaction is a key to our continued success.

Complaint: I had closed my accounts with this bank in July of this year (2013). Through them I had a bill pay service set up. When I'd closed my I double and triple checked with the personal banker who was helping me to be sure that I was done with them and the bill pay service and that I could move on with out worries. He gave me the green light and told me everything was fine. Early in November I began receiving calls from a third party which Associated Bank is using to run their bill pay service asking me to pay them 111.41$ for a bill pay. I explained to this company that I had closed the account and had not been with Associated Bank for months. This company explained to me that they had tried to get a refund from the payee of this bill, but that it was a non refundable bill. For some reason or another Associated could not (or would not) pay this third party company that had payed the bill on behalf of Associated Banks bill pay service. I think ok! I'll go talk to someone with Associated Bank. I'd received a letter from associated bank that was referring to this 111.41$ so I thought I'd take that with me and we could get everything cleared up. The personal banker I spoke with this time, said that if I'd closed my account then there was absolutely no reason that the bill pay service would have continued. What he had told me was that the letter was a notification that the bill had not been payed to the payee. So if I'd payed the bill by other means then this was not an issue and I had no worries. Cool! I pay my bills very promptly so no worries! December 2, 2013 I receive a letter telling me that "Within the next 30 days my information will be sent to an outside collection agency that will handle the collection process for this debt". I return to Associated Bank once more to talk with someone. I ended up talking with the personal banker who had helped me close my account. He essentially explained to me that this was my fault and that I needed to take care of it. I tried calling Associated Banks phone # for escalating a complaint to receive a "There's nothing we can do other than file complaints on the personal bankers you've dealt with. Here's the number for the third party company we do our bill pay service through, maybe they can help you". Ok, I've been jerked around for months over this issue, I can try one more phone call. After calling this third party company it was explained to me that the only option I had was to pay them the money that they had payed on my associated bank account's behalf. Even though I'd closed my account and completely walked away from that bank months ago.

Desired Settlement: I've been through a lot with this whole issue. If someone would have just called me right away and said "Hey! we screwed up! would you be ok with paying an extra month in advance for your phone bill?" I'm a very agreeable and understanding person, this wouldn't have been an issue. It's been month now, and they've put me through hoops that shouldn't have even existed. Now, they want money from me just before the holidays or they'll ruin what credit I have? I want Associated Bank to own up to their mistake, swallow the cost, apologize, and then leave me alone.

Better Business Bureau:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID *******, and find that this is sufficient. However the fact that Associated Bank denies any wrong doing raises red flags for me. Since when does a company not take full responsibility when a customer has been wronged?

I would hope that in the future Associated Bank would do better to train it's employees and more effectively communicate between its departments. This issue should never have gotten this far. period.

I was initially adamant about pushing for more by this point.. but in the end I'm glad to be clean of them and hope that Associated Bank can correct their business practices/operations for their customers sake.

Thank You,

Funds from a non-Associated Bank check deposit are generally available on the first business day after

Cash, electronic direct deposits, wire transfers and checks drawn on Associated Bank are available on
the business day we receive the deposit.
However, in some cases we will not make all of the funds that you deposit by check available to you on
the first business day after the day of your deposit. Funds you deposit by check may be delayed for a
longer period if the deposit totals more than $5,000 on anyone day. The first $5,000 will be available on
the first business day after the deposit and the excess over $5,000 will be available on the fifth business
day after the day of your deposit. Please refer to the attached funds availability disclosure for more
details.
Your $6,403.00 deposit on September 16, 2013 consisted of a $2,337.51 and $4,065.49 check. Of that
deposit $1303.00 was placed on hold for five business days and was made available on September 21,
2013. That was the amount over $5,000 less the $100.00 that is made available immediately.
Holds are placed on some deposited checks to help protect the customer and the bank from potential
loss. The bank may place a hold on deposited checks for a variety of reasons including large deposit
scenarios. If the check deposit is made in-person at one of our branches, the customer is provided with a
hold notice outlining the reason for the hold and the time in which the funds will be available. Associated

They closed my account and turned it over to a thug collection agency in Milwaukee called ***** *** ******* who has allot of complaints against them also. These collection agency that associate hired now is calling my elderly parents and threatening them for the money that Associated had stolen from me.

Complaint: We have a mortgage through Associated Bank. When we built our house, our loan agent, ***** *******, had stated that our interest rate would be locked in at 4.25%, at the last minute at paper signing, he neglected to mention that it had been raised to 5.50%. He had properly set up our payments understanding that our property is a new build and that our escrow would be set up incorrectly due to that factor. Associated altered the payment because the escrow was accumulating an excessive amount of extra funds, without notifying us of the change. The fund was originally set up so there wouldn't be a refund being issued. Then when our property was re-assessed, the taxes went up substantially and Associated reported an underpayment. So in order to recover their mistake/loss, they raised our mortgage by more than 50%, also without notifying us, until they sent a letter notifying us that our previous months mortgage payment was not received, which was not true, (however as previously stated, we had no idea that the payment was increased) no letters were sent, no phone calls were made, no emails, nothing. After speaking to customer care, it is evident that they have no desire to help resolving *their issue, regardless of our families financial ability to handle the increase, they just want their money.

Desired Settlement: I would like Associated to allow for a longer re-payment period to better suit our abilities to pay our mortgage and repay the previous years taxes, without penalties and/or late payment penalties, and any late payment penalties issued to be removed/re-funded, especially because our payments were *always on time.

on April 15, 2013 regarding your mortgage account ending in ****. I am glad that I had the opportunity
to speak with you regarding your concerns and was able to resolve this matter to your satisfaction.
Your escrow account is analyzed yearly based on the most current tax and insurance bill amounts to
determine any changes that need to be made to the escrow payment. The information is then
summarized on an Escrow Analysis statement and mailed to the address on file.
On the February 18, 2013 analysis statement we indicated that your payment was increasing to
$1,320.24 beginning on April 1, 2013. The reason for the increase was due to a difference in the
estimated payments for the previous year. We projected the homeowner's insurance for $539.00 but paid
$623.00 and the projected tax bill amount was $630.52 but we paid was $3,026.51. This resulted in an
escrow shortage of $3,304.22.
We understand that the increased monthly payments put you in a difficult place, so we spread out this
year's shortage over a 36 month period instead of 12 months. The new payment beginning on April 1,
2013 payment is $1,130.19. You stated that you will make the payment at an Associated Bank office by
the end of this month and I agreed to refund the late charge.

Complaint: I was charged a total of four overdraft fees of 35 dollars a piece. (105.00 total, they refunded me one charge) all of which weren't under my control, one was for gas I pumped because my account said it had 27 dollars, so I pumped 20. Another was because I paid two Hospital bills over the phone and they didn't charge me until a week and a day later when there weren't any funds due to the previous withdrawal they made of 115 dollars. I called about these issues and the lady i spoke to changed my account type to student checking and said there would be no more overdraft fees, but failed to mention there would be with any type of activity that wasn't debit. She also said when my account said i had 27, there wasn't and I should have been relying on my own calculations, not their mobile app. Well what's the point of mobile banking if its not correct? So the fourth was because I have a fitness account that takes 37.00 every 22nd of the month, since this was the first charge they deducted, I went to a branch yesterday the 20th on Martin Luther king day, so they were closed and I couldn't avoid this overdraw fee. I don't even make one hundred dollars a week and struggle as is with bills and trying to put myself through school and live on my own at age 19, for them to take 140.00 total without remorse isn't right. Since they know this is my first account I feel that they took advantage of me, lied to me and were mischievous with their policy's when they don't inform you of the entire policy! I don't feel as if what they are doing to me and to others is lawful or right.

Desired Settlement: I would like my 105.00 dollars back

RE: Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin, Case #*******
Dear Mr. ********,

This letter is in response to the complaint you filed with the Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin received
on January 16, 2013 regarding your checking account ending in ****. I apologize that you feel we did
not explain the account requirements clearly to you.
When you opened your account on November 2, 2011 as part of the Bark at Work program, one of the
requirements to avoid service fees is a $100 direct deposit from your employer. On January 6, 2012 we
assessed a $15.00 service fee because the account no longer had the direct deposit. After 90 days
without a direct deposit of $100 or more, we converted the account to Advantage Checking with your
February 2012 statement and included the Consumer Deposit Account Fee Schedule with that statement.
Then with the November 2012 statement, we disclosed that we were making some changes to our
products and services effective January 2, 2013.
Although the service fees we assessed are valid according to the terms and conditions of your account, I
refunded the $60.00 in service fees on January 28,2013 as a customer courtesy. There are a number of
ways to avoid the service fee in the future. I enclosed a copy of Notice of Change which gives details on
avoiding those fees.

Each time he was rude but on today he actually laughed as if it was nothing that could be done. what he has done is took monies out of my checking account and closed my savings account and put them in an account that has my wife name on it. the accounts has nothing to with each other and they have never been combined, he actually not only took the money without my consent but he had my account frozen where bills thay i have on automatic pay was not able to be paid and when I called to let him know I was getting a lawyer and putting in a complaint he actually laugh as if it was nothing. I HAVE TALKED TO OTHER BANKERS and they told me if i have never connected the two as in using one to cover the overdrafts that it was illegal to be done and thats when he really laughed I refused to do bussiness with a company that has rude employees and I have been a long time customer with this bank. This man is very very rude and I will not only be putting his name and this bank on the better buss complaint but with the bankers ass as well. Please accept my apology for your disappointment with the service you received from our Corporate

Complaint: On 10-15-12 I made a $300 deposit to my checking account, was not told these funds would be held for 3 days, was charged OD fees wrongly as stated above account balance was -259.70, after 300 deposit balance was 40.30 according to my deposit receipt. I spent a total of 5.30 on line (5 seperate charges of $1) which I had funds for and had a check clear for 22.61. After this activity my balance was 12.39. I was later told the check I deposited was held for 3 days (funds were not available, but deposit slip showed available funds and nothing was said when I made deposit). On the 15th when these charges went through it shows on line that these deductions were made leaving a positive balance in the account of 12.39 and Overdraft charges were deducted from my account of $70 (even though nothing shows overdrawn - this snowballed from then until now. I have requested the OD fees be returned to me since #1 I was not overdrawn when the initial $70 was taken and even if the deposit I made was held for 3 days why was I not told that??? The check I deposited two weeks before from the same person was not held for 3 days. As of today my checking balance should be $454.09 but due to that initial 70 being deducted and causing my account to overdraw and stay overdrawn, I keep getting charged so according to the bank my account balance is -273.91 (overdrawn). I feel this is outrageous! Like MANY other people I was out of work for two months last summer and to date money is still tight, trying to catch up. How can people live??? I called and left a message asking that this be corrected, I received a vm from *** at the ******* branch more or less telling me "too bad". IS THIS HOW ASSOCIATED MAKES ITS PROFITS? I was solicited by two people from Associated who came into my place of employment soliciting. Their push was that they were a small bank, small town attitude and customers were treated like friends - I was called by one of the officers 3-4 times wanting to make sure all my banking needs were being met (before this all happened). It would have taken the same amount of time to call me and explain the hold that was put on my deposit without my knowledge or why my account was charged $70 for overdrafts that according to the bank reconcilliation did not overdraw. That small town attitude must have only applied when marketing. I work 2 jobs now, am rarely home, don't get to check my mail daily and didn't think I needed to since according to my calculations and banking receipt as well as on line statement, I was in the positive and reconcilled from there forward. I am sending a complaint to Associated Bank Headquarters, MN Secretary of Commerce, the local newspapers, and whomever I need to to have this wrong made right! Associated Bank owes me $721.42 - I am attaching a downloaded copy of my account reconcilliation to prove my point.

Desired Settlement: Associated Bank owes me $721.42 - I am attaching a downloaded copy of my account reconcilliation to prove my point. I want the $721.42 refunded to me - I feel this is the only correct answer.

Complaint: I had opened a credit line years ago with my son ******* ** **** so he could purchase a vehicle for work. He did not continue to work or pay on this line of credit so my wife and I continued to pay on it over the past years. We could not get the payments down so in May we transferred the balance owed to a 0%interest new line of credit through another banking service. This went through in May at which time I was diagnosed with ***** ****** and was in the hospital approximately the first 2 weeks of May after that I needed a PET scan and began Chemotherapy. My wife **** was instrumental in keeping up our financial accounts and getting me to my appointments over this time. We did not close the Associated Bank account at that time as there was not time in our schedule to address it also it had not been used in years because it had been maxed there was no available credit on it. In the meantime our son ******* had been apparently trying to open a checking account so he and his girlfriend could cash her paychecks. The personnel at Associated Bank looked up his name and saw this account now paid off with now available credit and offered it to him as a line of credit and checking available to him. They did not contact myself (******) as the other person listed on this account to see if I was in agreement with opening this account with ****. They sent checks to our address with my and ****'s name on them and that is how I found out about this account. I feel it was wrong and I was a victim having a checking account opened without me being contacted about it. Anytime my wife opens a credit line or charges a certain amount I as her spouse get notified of this. I feel Associated Bank wronged me and now I will again be responsible for *******'s expenses but this time not with my consent. I have talked with them by phone but did not get resolution. I would like my name off of ****'s check card and account that was opened without my consent.

Desired Settlement: I would like Associated Bank to be responsible for opening this checking account without my consent to change the billing and name of account to just ******* **** for any charges to his new checking/check card credit services.

Complaint: I have been a long time user of Associated Banks Paychek Plus Paycard system. I attempted to use the **** debit card on a fuel pump and had it denied due to incorrect zip code. The attempt incurred a holdover charge of one hundred and twenty-five dollars. After three days of having my hard earned much needed money held from me, I contacted the company via their customer service hotline, where I was told that I either had to have the gas station company send an elaborate fax to their offices or wait ten days. Ten days is too long to hold that amount from a hard working American struggling to get by in this economy. The small town gas station had no procedure for this situation and denied my request for sending the required fax, and the banking company would not provide any alternative for me to either have that money returned or have the two companies talk directly. I feel this is quite unreasonable and an act on the level of theft.

Desired Settlement: By the grace of god and my family I will survive the month by borrowing money, and I don't expect this complaint to be processed within ten days. However I would like to receive an apology for the duress and financial strain this puts on me and my family. More importantly I wanted to express my convictions that what happened to me is a very nasty low move and should not happen to anyone.

Complaint: the bank accidently put money into my account and i used some of it and then they took it out. i thought the money in the account was mine i didn't know it was a mistake until today. now they are charging me about 30 dollars for using the money when it wasn't mine which i was unaware of. i don't think that's fair to make me pay for their mistake and now i don't have money for gas so i can go to work. also i owed more but they used my last check to lower what they said i owed i hadn't even used my card yet so my whole check went right back to them for their mistake which is not fair for me.

Desired Settlement: i believe that i shouldn't have to pay for their mistake and now i cant work today and Im going to have to borrow money from my mom so that adds up to 70 dollars 30 for what they say i owe them and 40 for money for gas, i also think i should get some money for them blaming me on this to

Complaint: A promotional bonus was not paid to me after meeting requirements. I met with a personal banker, ****** *******, in Appleton in December, I had her emove me from my husbands account, due to a separation, and needed my own account. She then signed me up for a special account that had the possibility to earn $150.00 by completeing 3 tasks with my new account and debit card. I completed 2 out of the 3 requirements, therefore earning $100.00 out of the possible $150.00, This was to be paid out after 12 from the date I opened my account. After this period of time I started to inquire about the bonus I had earned, at first they kept telling me it will be paid out in a certain time frame, so I patiently waited. After a lonf while I decided to call this banker myself since she is the person whom signed me up for this account. She told me she would send in for the request of payment and to not worry about anything she would take care of it. I again patiently waited for the bonus to be paid out, still nothing. Last week I called ****** ******* once again and after 1 week had passed she finally returnedmy call telling me, she must have read something wrong that now I would not get this bonus I earned. I would have never signed up for this special account that has special requirements, I would have signed up for a free checking to avoid charges. But due to this personal banker faulsifying information and lying to me about this promotion, I have anaccount that will charge me if I do not maintain certain minimum requirements. I believe I should receive this promotional bonus, regardless, I have met the minimum requirements and held my end of this account to standards, this bank should be held accountable to do the same. I feel this a sort of false advertising as well, it is advertised to consumers about this special promotion. But in fact it is just a gimmic and a lye.

Desired Settlement: I am looking to receive the $100.00 promotional bonus I have rightfully earned.

Consumer Response: Complaint number,*******, a member of Associated Bank calle me this afternoon. They are going to honor the promotion and pay out the money I earned, she said it would be within 48 hours of today. Thank you,****** *****

Complaint: I was informed 5 days prior to my closing that my loan will not be ready to close. I received little information from my loan officer from the start. From the very start of my loan application process, my lender provided little to no assistance. My questions frequently went unanswered. I emailed repeatedly to ensure everything was set for the closing date of 7-16-12. I received no confirmation or response. I didn't find out until 6 days prior to closing that my loan officer does not have my loan ready. I have been emailing her and asking her if everything was ready and if I needed to do anything more. She never responded. My apartment lease is ending. I have at least 20% down payment sitting in my bank account; although she never answered me when I asked for an approximate price for the down payment. After reading the Associated Bank website, I was so shocked to see all of the claims of alleged support and services provided by the mortgage loan officers. These are all of the things I would have expected and received NONE of: "Ready to close on your mortgage quickly? We can get your mortgage approved in minutes, rather than days or weeks!" "The closing agent acts as our agent and will represent us at the closing. However, your personal Loan Officer will contact you prior to closing to talk about your final documents and to provide a final breakdown of your closing fees." "If you have any questions that the closing agent can't answer during the closing, ask them to contact your Loan Officer by phone and we'll get you the answers you need - before the closing is over!" "Buying your first home is a big step. The home mortgage loan officers at Associated Bank will guide you through the process with clear explanations and educational resources." My loan officer is perfectly aware that this is my first home purchase and I had no idea what to do or expect. When I called the consumer complaint line for We Care at Associated Bank (consumer affairs) the representative was helpful and professional. She contacted my lender on her cell phone and there was a three way call. The lender acted as though she had no idea why I was calling or what I needed. She asked me if an appraisal had been done. When I told her I had no idea, she asked if they had driven by at all. I again told her I have no idea because I don't live near the home and have not received any information from her. Although the entire process is new for me, I do know that the bank sets up an appraisal and was dumbfounded that she was asking me for this information. She then explained that they have been "messing around" with the income portion of my loan because of a promotion that I received. I can't imagine what the consumer affairs representative was thinking while listening in on this call, but I would hope it would be treatment that she has never heard before from any other representatives of the company. I also hope the call was recorded and is used for training purposes in the future. The little information that I received came from my realtor and it is not his responsibility to inform me of the mortgage loan process. It is 5 days before closing and my realtor is now asking what is going on. This is an extremely stressful situation that no one should have to go through, let alone someone having just gone through a divorce, changing jobs after selling my house while married and living in a small apartment with two young children.

Desired Settlement: More than anything, I just wanted to make my situation known. I still don't know what is going to happen with my loan, but felt the need to document my situation somewhere.

Business Response:

Thank you,

Complaint: I was POA and POD on my father's accounts. When he died, I called to make sure all was in place and the checks that were written would clear. ******** assured me they would and after bills were paid I was to have checks then written to family members to distribute the remaining amount. He understood this plan and said it was fine. Instead of these checks clearing, they bounced because he froze the accounts. When I asked them to fix it, they did not even understand what had happened or why he would have said that. Mr **** said he would un freeze the accounts but recommended I close the savings account. This made the entire amount listed as income to me instead of it being distributed among the whole family. After more checks bounced after that I closed the checking account too and reissued checks from my personal acct (at a different bank luckily). I asked to be reimbursed for the NSF fees and they would not. ******** could not even recall our conversation. They did not admit fault or take responsibility for anything. It is hard enough dealing with a death without having to run around and try to fix a so called professional institutions mistakes. They never once said they were sorry about my father which I think would have been a very nice gesture. I have left phone messages with both ******** and Mr **** and I did not get calls back. Thank you for your help. I do not want to see them do things like this to some other unsuspecting and trusting person in the same situation.I will be DISpleased if I now have to pay taxes on this entire amount when the original plan, which I was told my ******** would work, was snafu'd by one of their employees.

Desired Settlement: I had to make several last second trips to drop off checks to many places.I had at least one NSF fee and will most likely have to pay taxes on my father's money. Reimbursement, admitting fault and an apology would be lovely.

Complaint: I have taken screenshots and have PDF files of my online banking account to show you when the last transaction was done, which will show you the wrong they've done against me and as a result they have caused my account to be in the hole. If I inform you I need my accounts closed, then close them. Don't keep them open so you can wrongfully charge a service fee. Are they trying to tell me it cost $10 to close my accounts?! This is absurd! I don't know how to send you the PDF files and documentation I've gathered to go with my complaint. Maybe there's a section on the following pages after this step in the complaint. But on 5/15/2012 at 12:55:21 PM, I logged into my online banking with Associated Bank to inform them I need my accounts closed. This included my checking account (last four digits ending with ****) and my savings account (last four digits ending with ****). I sent a lengthy response to explain why just so they know. But to put in a nutshell, I bank wherever my employer banks so it's easier for cashing their checks. I've had problems in the past with banks having some sort of issue communicating with each other. There were a few times I had my employer on the phone, they had their bank on the phone, I had my bank on the phone and my employer and I were trying to get the two banks to communicate so they could find and clear the check. Banks had serious communication issues with other banks. So I figured I could easily eliminate that issue by banking with the same bank as my employer whoever my employer is with at the time. A lot less stress to deal with. Well, my employer no longer banks with Associated Bank. So I have moved my funds to the same bank my employer has been banking with for at least the last 3 to 4 weeks. Additionally, even if I wanted to use this account for just putting my savings into, I can't do that conveniently since there are no Associated Bank branch locations here in ******, ***** (where I moved to after leaving Beaver Dam, WI about a year ago) for me to go make a deposit. All the deposits into my Associated Bank account was done by my employer. That's how I got paid every week. With them no longer banking with Associated Bank, there is nobody who can make those deposists for me that I trust. So I can't make deposits into my Associated Bank accounts, this is what I told them with my request to close my accounts. I can't use these accounts. It is no longer convenient because my employer has chosen to bank with a different bank and on top of that Associated Bank has absolutely no bank locations here in ******, ** for me to go in to make a deposit. They don't have plans to expand to *****. So weeks ago, I've withdrawn as much of my money out of my accounts with Associated Bank from an ATM machine and then contacted them informing them I need my accounts closed and the remaining balances mailed to me in the form of a check. I even thanked Associated Bank for such a pleasant banking experience. And then THIS happens that totally throws all of that right out the door. I logged into my banking just to see if in fact they've closed my accounts since I had not received a check and noticed my account was in the hole. Mind you, I have not used the account since May 14, 2012. So I checked my account summary to see what caused the negative balance and it was a service fee of $10 charged by the very bank I informed to close my accounts on 5/15/2012 at 12:55:21 PM. Can you believe that?! If they had closed my accounts like I informed them to do, there would be no service fee to charge. And what is the service fee for anyway? To close my accounts?! It doesn't make sense. I requested my accounts be closed 5/15/2012 at 12:55:21 PM and two days later instead of closing my accounts, they chose to keep my accounts open, not mail me a check for the remaining balances in the amount $9.69 cents (checking account had $4.69 at the time I requested account closure and my savings had $5 remaining). It is May 22, 2012 and they have STILL NOT closed my accounts. This constitutes as being excessive delay in completing service of account closure while attempting to charge me a fee two days after I requested my accounts be closed. My accounts should close with a positive balance. Period. I have never had a negative balance during the entire time I've banked with them and this service fee that they put on my account to throw my account in the hole is wrongful. And they need to make this wrong made right and once and for all honor my request for account closure as I informed them on 5/15/2012 at 12:55:21 PM. Here it is 7 days later and my accounts have yet to be closed and I've not received a check for my balances. This is how they treat good account holders who have maintained a positive balance during the entire duration of the banking relationship with them? This is how they treat them?! They need to make this wrong made right and honor my original request made on 5/15/2012 at 12:55:21 PM -- they also have this request on file as it was sent through their online banking system message center platform that same day as well.

Desired Settlement: I request they give me my money back. My account has had a positive balance since I've opened my account. I made darn sure it did because I am a responsible person. The service fee should not have been charged had they closed my account on the 5/15/2012 at 12:55:21 PM, which is when I informed them I needed them closed for obvious reasons explained above. Why they chose to honor my request is something I cannot control. There are NO Associated Bank branch locations here in Austin, TX so there is no point in me keeping these accounts especially since my employer no longer banks with them. So I am entitled to getting that service fee reversed, since it was in fact, charged AFTER I requested my accounts be closed. In addition to that, I need them to go ahead and ONCE AND FOR ALL, CLOSE my accounts like I informed them to do on 5/15/2012 at 12:55:21 PM. My accounts should be closed with a positive balance, not negative and I should get a check for my balances (savings account $5.00 and checking account $4.69. As you can see I have not made any deposits or withdrawals or any sort of use of the account since May 14, 2012. The next day I informed them I no longer needs these accounts and to have them closed. I even was nice enough to tell them why I want the accounts closed. So they could understand. And in return, they kept my accounts opened and then charged me a service fee. That fee needs to be reversed, the accounts closed, a check for $9.69 mailed to me to the address they have for me on file. Stop with the delay. My accounts should be closed with a positive balance as they should. There is no reason my accounts should be in the hole. None at all. That's the outcome I desire and deserve. I've not ever caused trouble with this bank. My accounts have never been in the hole during the entire time I banked with this company. I deserve to be treated with respect and not taken advantage of because I don't live in an area where there is an Associated Bank location. They know I can't put money into the account because they've known for several months I live in Texas where they have no Associated Bank locations. So to charge me a service fee knowing I can't put money into the bank even AFTER I told them I need my accounts closed is absolutely WRONG. I want my money back and my accounts closed as I originally requested 5/15/2012 at 12:55:21 PM. And I will never do business with this bank again after this. I shouldn't have had to get an third-party involved and contact BBB to file an official complain in order to get this resolved.

Business Response:

Thank you,

Associated Bank

Consumer Response:

Hello,

Yes, I received two checks in the mail for $4.69 and $5.00 and went to cash them at a Money Box instead of my bank not knowing if the checks were valid or not. The reason for this lack of trust in the checks is because I found no confirmation that my accounts were closed in the envelope with the two checks. I did not receive an email nor a phone call letting me know my accounts were closed either. So I do appreciate you confirming via the BBB platform that my accounts have indeed been closed. Thank you for also letting me know through BBB that the wrongful service fee applied to my account AFTER I requested it be closed has in fact been reversed. There would have been no service fee if my account were closed the day I requested it be closed. So thanks for admitting and correcting your bank's error while resolving this matter. It is a shame I had to make a formal complain with the BBB in order to get you all to resolve this matter. Overall, I had a good banking experience with you up until you gave me a hard time when I requested my account be closed for more than understandable reasons. Just the hassle is not worth ever banking with you all in the future, even if you all some day decided to expand into the Texas territory. I have been nothing but a good account holder and this was beyond ridiculous to have to do to get your bank's error corrected and my original request honored.

Thank you for finally resolving this matter and thank you BBB for aiding in this process. If it weren't for you BBB this probably would still not be resolved without getting a more influential authority involved. This was silly and shouldn't have reached this point. I'm so thankful it's over. Good-bye Associated Bank. Thanks again, BBB, for all of your help.

Best regards,

******

Additional Notes

Complaint: I have called Associated Bank countless times about applying overdraft protection to my account. If the money is not available in my account, I do not want a charge to go through. Every time I call they say, "Sure, no problem. We'll apply overdraft protection. You won't get any fees." Still, I have been receiving fees. I do not want ANY charges to go through if the money is not there. If you allow a charge to go through, then you are responsible for it, not me. I am not going to pay the $35 fee that is currently on my account. Their employees do not know what they are doing and fail to explain policies to their customers. I never had an issue with my other banks: If I did not have the funds, the charge was decline, period.

Desired Settlement: I would like any overdraft fees on my account to be reversed or I will gladly find a bank that appreciates their customers and understands the phrase "Overdraft Protection". I would also like a written apology for the hassle, as this has caused me to fall behind on my school payments. Hopefully, I will not have to drop the class. I also think that Associated Bank should invest more time in training their customer service reps.

Business Response:

Thank you,

Additional Notes

Complaint: I placed a "stop payment" on a ACH debit payable to Discover Card. The employee who helped me was unsure if the item would come through as a check or an ACH draft since it had come through my account both ways. The stop payment did have the dollar amount exactly and the name Discover Card. When the "stop payment" department saw the draft come through they let it clear my account because it had a chek number on it, even though the other two pieces of information matched. As a result, my account is now overdrawn almost $400 because they paid the item. When I called and asked that they return the item because I had a "stop payment" on it, they said theat they would not because it had a check number on it but I could put another stop payment on Discover Card for the same dollar amount and add the check number. To do so though I would have to pay another $35.

Desired Settlement: I would like to have my account credited back for all of the nsf fees incurred and a reinbursment of the $132 to my account since I had out on the "stop payment" because I didn't want the item paid. I have been charged at lease $500 in overdraft charges over the past year due to the unfair check paying practices. Thank You for your time! ******** ********

Additional Notes

Complaint: On 4/2/12 I went online to make payments. Doing so I noticed I needed to transfer $ from one account to another. So I did. On 4/5/12 I recieve a post card and inside it stated Notice of Insufficient Funds. Further in the post card they showed 3 items that were each being charged a $35 over draft fee and threaten that for each additional day of a negative balance they would charge me another $7 per day per item. So I went online to see what had happened. After reviewing I noticed that instead of transfering $ into account to pay bills I accidentily transfered $ out of my account. So understandably I'm at fault for making a mistake but feel taken advantage of because the $ was in the other account at the same bank so it wasnt like I was trying to make them to pay my bills for free; it was purely a simple mistake. Furthermore after reviewing my accounts online they charged me $35 for 4 items that all were part of one transaction on the same day. My problem and dissatisfaction is that instead of calling, emailing, texting or even leaving me a message in my mailbox account with them on-line (I receive meaninless mesages from them all the time but not one about something important like this???) they instead send me a post card after the fact. This day and age with the many tools companies have to contact people theres no reason I shouldn't have recieved an automatic message stating that I'm about to be insufficient in funds giving me time to correct the overdraft charge that would be placed. I would understand charging me 1 overdraft fee since this all happened in the same transaction but they charged me for 4 seperate item even though they were placed at the same time. The lack of customer service and understanding is very disappointing; not everyone is purposely trying to defraud the bank. I run a small business and before any charges for late payments or such are posted to their account I contact the customer letting them know of this with pletny of time for them to correct! I would think a Billion Dollar corporation could do the same if not better.

Desired Settlement: I feel getting at least 3 of the 4 overdraft fees should be refunded if not the entire 4 because of the lack of customer service.

Additional Notes

Complaint: I have an acount that i have been trying to close for almost 2 months. I stopped all deposits and auot bill pays from the bank. One payment did sneak through before the deposits were cancelled. I have tried to work with the bank to close the act, i have offered to pay what i took out but not the 7$ per day fee they charge for a continous overdraft. The total fees they have charged since the end ov November 2011 is 448$. I had a deposit put in on 12/2 and 12/16 for 200$ a piece. They have now sent a charge of 487.19 to a collection agancy. I have contacted them and attempted to work something out. The additional 7$ per day fee i never agreed to and do not feel it is right to be charged that. I am completly willing to pay what i had taken out of the act, but not something i didnt authorize.

Desired Settlement: i want the act closed, and the charges taken off so i can finally be done with the acount and that bank

Business Response:

Thank you,

Associated Bank
