On May 26th, I attempted to buy a Pre-owned Mazda6 from Skagit Hyundai, in Burlington WA. My wife reached out prior to the dealership opening. She was immediately told that the car was still available, and was told to come in and make arrangements to purchase. Being out of town, we had no way of being able to do that, as was told that the dealership doesn’t typically sell to people from out of state, and that the cars were sold on a “first come, first serve” basis. My wife responded by saying that we had the money available to be wired, and being as though the car was still available, responded by basically saying that she should be “first” then. I reached out to the dealership immediately after the dealership opened, and talked with a salesman. He discussed with his sales manager, which I later talked with. Both reiterated that they typically sell locally, and that local people were given priority. Being that the car was in stock for over 20 days, I responded that the local people had already had more than ample opportunity to purchase the car, AND since the car was listed on a nationwide web site, we had the money in hand, and transportation lined up to pick the car up, selling to us should be no issue. Both the Salesman and his sales manager both agreed to move forward and would be sending me a purchase agreement. I told them that after the car purchase agreement was received and terms agreed to, I would wire the money to their account to close the deal. I never received that purchase agreement. I called and followed up several times, and the only excuse offered up was that they were busy. Later that evening, I was informed they had sold the car. I have copies of all email communications available. During the whole process, I was told that they could not take a deposit, for which I offered via credit card, and they insisted several times that the only “binding” agreement in the State of Washington was full payment. I researched Washington State laws and statues and found no evidence that what I was being told was truthful or accurate. As a result, I wasn’t able to purchase this car, having funds and transportation in hand. I felt like I was being “led on” the whole day. Had they just told me that they didn’t want to sell me the car, I would have been unhappy, but at least I wouldn’t have been wasting my time and effort for a transaction that was never going to materialize. Furthermore, I felt like I was being lied to, and needlessly discriminated against because I was an out of state resident. I offered up a non-refundable deposit, the ability to verify funds being available. There was NO reason, in my mind, that they didn’t or wouldn’t sell me the car. As a result, I am making official complaints against the Skagit Hyundai dealership, and their unfair business practices.
