Complaint: I purchased a 24 inch sterling silver chain in June, 2012, it broke July, 2012. The chain was not abused, kept straight, not worn during any sports,or sleeping time. It broke near the clasp. I took the chain back to the connection and was told that there is a certain way that it should be placed when putting it on and that the wearer had broken it. This person has been wearing jewelry for MANY years and the ability to know how to fasten a chain. The connection said that it would be more expensive to fix than to purchase a new one. The offer was to sell another one for half price.I feel that the connection was very curt and condesending to us. I am a resident of Salem, VA and should have gone to ******** instead!!!
Desired Settlement: I feel that the chain was defective and would be afraid to receive another one for the same reason.
Consumer Response: The date of purchase of the sterling silver chain was 6/21/12. The amount was $30.44. The salesperson was a woman on that date. The complaint to Jewelry Connection was 7/26/12. The salesperson that day was the gentleman that is in the TV ad for the Jewelry Connection.
Business Response: In response to the complaint: We explained to the customer that if the chain was defected then two things would have happened: the chain would have broken right away, and it would have broken in the center. The chain broke because the item was mishandled. In our opinion offering a new chain at half the price was a fair option because repairing the chain would have cost more than replacing the chain at the regular price. We are confident that we made the right decision in this situation.
Consumer Response: I am not pleased with the response!!!!! If you buy a car or any other item new and it has a faulty part, it will never break right away, and a chain is no exception. Also, a chain will break not always in the center as as stated but at it's weakest link. There is no always. Anytime metal is heated, formed or bent, stress occurs and can cause an early failure. I know this because as a machinist and welder and also a warranty inspector at ***********, I saw many such failures. I do not want a new chain as I have already purchased one from a store I know to be reputable. I will continue to share my experience at the Jewelry Connection with everyone I come in contact with and will hope they will continue to spread this disappointment with the Jewelry Connection!!!!! *** *****
BBB's Final Determination: After reviewing the position of all parties, BBB determined that the business made a reasonable effort to address the complaint. However the consumer remains dissatisfied.
