I hired West fall roofing to replace the roof of my home and repair west side gable with new hardie board.
when their salesman came out to look at the job I stated that I wanted a new roof over and west side gable to be replace,I stated to the saleman to remove the old T 1-11 from the gable and replace the gable with the new man made material Hardie board.
I was checking in an out on the roof job which they did a great job on the roof over on the house,my complaint is they did not remove the old T 1-11 material as instructed by me by installed the hardie board on the old T 1-11 board ,They tried to tell me the hardie board is installed that way, but after Emailing the Hardie board products they informed me that they way you install hardie board is that the wood must be straight any bad spots must be remove and a special barrier cover must be installed on old wood before you place hardie board on it so my total complaint on this is:
1- they did not due what I stated in the first place replace remove old wood and replace with the Hardie board.

2- they did not repair old T 1-11 wood to make it straight,it had waves in it and bottom of board was frayed and separating it did not seal against house.

3-they did not install special barrier between T 1-11 and hardie board, which will allow moisture and develop mildew between the boards the hardie board does not seal against house.

the price I was quoted was for the remove and reinstall of the wood on the gable then after I got hold of the salesman and let him know how displease I was about the gable he got back with me later with a phony excuse about how the job was done that way an if I wanted the wood completely remove again it was going to cost more money,

4- I paid them what they said it would cost to do the job and they did not do it,an when they sent out a Tech to look at the job the fist words out of his was they was not done right.

Desired Settlement
complete remove and install of the hardie board that I paid in the first place.

Roof Leak Repair Issues
In early 12/2014, I hired Westfall Roofing to fix a roof leak above the front bedroom of my home. The estimator indicated to me that I needed part of my (white) ridge vent replaced and that it was the probable cause of my leak. When he showed it to me, the ridge vent looked odd though because I recall looking at it the prior day and I believe it was not bent upwards. In any event, I trusted the estimator and accepted the work order. I will note that the estimator never went up into the attic. I was given an initial estimate and timeframe of repair, sometime before Christmas. I was informed that I would receive a call the next day in order to schedule the repair date which did not occur. I had to call the following business day to actually schedule the repair. The workers arrived according to schedule and began repairs. I noticed after checking the work later in the day that the original (white) ridge vent was still there. I immediately contacted the company and between me and the representative, we realized that the crew actually installed a new black ridge vent in the wrong place. She indicated they would send another crew to replace the entire ridge vent which they did later install. That was supposed to have fixed the leak. When the next rainstorm came in, the leak still existed in the same location. My computer was nearly destroyed when the water fell on my keyboard. I immediately called Westfall again informing them that the replacement ridge vent did not solve the roof leak problem. They later sent another repairman to do a repair in a different area where they found a hole and sealed the front area forward in front of the bedroom area. I recall questioning the repairman whether the problem wasn't directly above the leak inside. He and his assistant assured me no in response and that there work would fix the leak. I moved all my equipment back into the office. When the next heavy rainstorm came, the leak was still there in the same place. I called to report the leak still was not fixed and spoke with the owner. We discussed the problem and he arrived the next day to examine the leak with his associate. His worker this time did go into the attic and took pictures of where the leak was occurring. He indicated my roof was not installed properly to begin with and that I have other leaks in the garage area. He recommended I should get a new roof installed. He then sent another repairman later the same day to patch the leak. Yesterday (2/7/15), I had a roofing contractor from a different company come out to verify the latest patch work by Westfall. The new contractor went up in the attic, took pictures which I have saved, and indicated the last patch job would probably not stop the leak. He indicated that the shingles in the area were not sealed properly. The new contractor also indicated that tar alone will not stop the leak and that the old shingles (in the problem area) need to be replaced with new ones. It will cost me additional money to hire the new contractor to properly fix the problem. The wood under the shingles and also the ceiling has been more damaged due to the leak not being fixed the first time. If Westfall Roofing did not believe they could properly repair my roof, then they should not have accepted to do the job to begin with. This has caused us a lot of aggravation. I sincerely appreciate their attempts and I had complemented them a couple times believing (incorrectly) the problem was solved. A Westfall repairman will come to examine the last job tomorrow (2/8/15). Unfortunately, I have lost faith they can fix this problem properly and am requesting a refund to compensate for future (correct) repair of area affected.

Desired Settlement
I am willing to accept a refund of a reasonable amount, a full refund ideal.

Business Response
Initially, one of our Repair Technicians assessed the roof and determined that there was an active leak that was being caused by a hole coming from an aluminum ridge vent which Westfall Roofing replaced. However, the customer continued to complain about an active leak. We then Sent out three repair technicians to assess the roof once again. The customer complained that the aluminum ridge vent that we replaced did not match the rest of the ridge vents that were on his roof. We then replaced all of the ridge vents free of charge. The customer then continued to complain about an active leak. We sent two roof technicians to asses the roof. They determined that there was a separate issue. There was a hole in his roof and shingles that were not properly adhered to the L flashing along the front of the house. We repaired this, again, free of charge. The customer then called and complained again claiming that we did not address the correct issue. We then sent out our most senior repair technician as well as the owner of the company to assess the roof. It was determined that numerous problems are being caused due to improper installation of the fasteners when the roof was originally installed. This is the root problem of these issues. We addressed symptoms of this underlying issue. However, we could not take away the fact that the fasteners were improperly installed and the roof would need to be completely replaced in order to take care of all of the various issues. We charged $450.00 to replace 10 LF of ridge vent. We ended up replacing over 40 feet of ridge vent at no charge as well as adhering all the shingles along the
L flashing on the front of the home, repairing a hole and conducting four separate assessments. We were contracted to stop an active leak and we did so. We feel that we have gone way beyond the scope of work that was originally contracted. Along with solving these issues, we were in constant contact with the customer. We received several correspondences from the customer stating what an excellent job we did and that our installers worked with high efficiency and he would recommend our company for future roof work. He also stated that our customer service was great. In conclusion, Westfall Roofing does not feel that a refund is warranted.
I have attached the last communication that I had with the customer.

02/05/2015Problems with Product / Service | Read Complaint Details

We had several service related issues with a recent roof job completed by Westfall Roofing.
Westfall Roofing completed on 10/17. I had several issues with their service.

1) First the immediate surrounding was not properly tarped before beginning work. I walked outside about an hour into the job only to find the herb garden that my daughter had just planted filled with roof debris, shingles, and nails. Our landscaping was also littered with the debris. It would have taken them about 15 minutes to properly tarp the job and about 5 $10 tarps from Harbor Freight. They tried to do it with a couple. I called the owner and expressed my displeasure and he visited the job site within the hour. I shouldn't have to tell him how to do his job properly. He apologized but did not offer to replace my daugther's herb garden which had to be trashed.

2) When I signed the contract it included 3 pieces of replacement wood if wood rot was found when they were doing the tear off. I was aware I would be responsible for anything additional related to wood rot as they did not know the condition of the wood under the shingles as it could not be seen. During the tear off I was in contact with the project lead regarding any rot. They only found two small areas that needed 2 boards for repair. So as you can imagine I was shocked when my final invoice included 11 boards for replacement. After argument with the sales person they did finally remove the additional boards. But buyer beware!

3) During the shingle installation they removed the gutter on the rear of the property. Upon completion they re-installed the gutter but I am still getting leaks where joints were not properly re-installed. They have sent a company repair man, but there are still open issues with it. I was told they should have sold me new gutters when putting on the roof. Nice to know after you sold me the roof job and I have already paid 13k. The gutters were only a year old.

4) I was disappointed at the job completion when I asked for any remaining shingles so I could save them for repair if needed in the future. I paid for them! But was told they were already hauled off. You would think it would be common practice for them to leave you with a few shingles if you just had your entire roof replaced. We recently had new wood floors put in our house and they left over 2 boxes when they were completed.

5) I am still waiting a month after the fact for the wind mitigation report required by my insurance company. It was included in the contract. I have sent one email to the sales person and placed two follow-up calls. My last call was two weeks ago where I was told I would have it last week. As of 11/20 I still do not have it. When we purchased the house 3 years ago we had one completed and had it within 2 days. So the fact that it is over a month and we still do not have it is unacceptable. They had no problem cashing our check for payment in full immediately.

Desired Settlement
We are beyond frustrated that we choose Westfall Roofing for our roof replacement. We had over 5 quotes and they were not the cheapest but based on their history in business we thought we would avoid these headaches. We have learned the lesson the hard way and hope this helps a future customer considering them.

It is unfortunate to hear that Mr. *********** had such a poor experience with our company. It was my understanding that at the conclusion of the project, Mr. *********** had a positive experience. He had mentioned he would refer us to his neighbor and praised our crews. Suffice it to say, I am surprised by his BBB complaint. We had even discussed getting a beer together at some point. So again I would like reiterate that I am surprised. I felt like we had developed a good rapport. If I was made aware that Mr. *********** still had issues with his roof replacement, I would have certainly attempted to remedy his concerns.
Though we previously offered, we would like to offer again the replacement of any plants that were damaged in the Herb Garden. Also, if Mr. *********** would like, we can our Lead Roof Tech address the rear corner gutter, we will also provide him with a bundle of shingles, and we will email Mr. ***********'s wind mitigation inspection again.
My personal interaction with Mr. *********** lead me to believe that he was happy with the project. We made several concessions throughout the project to ensure that Mr. *********** was satisfied. We offered to replace the plants in the herb garden and we did not charge him for the necessary wood work. My final interaction with Mr. *********** left me with the understanding that he and I would work together to remedy his concerns. When the project was 100% completed, it was our understanding that Mr. *********** was a satisfied customer.
In conclusion, I hope we are given to the opportunity to turn Mr. *********** experience with our organization into a positive one.

Consumer Response
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
I feel this response is half-hearted and filled with inaccuracies. First, might I add that the Westfall took almost a month to even respond to our BBB complaint. The BBB had to follow-up numerous times with them to even get a response.
I have elaborated the inaccuracies below.
1) No mention to the fact that it took almost two months to deliver the wind mitigation report after numerous phone calls and emails went unanswered. Again this should have taken no more than a few days to provide after completion of the job. It was clearly included in the contract.
2) At no time did anyone offer to replace the herb garden. This is a lie. Please let me know if you would like me to replace the garden and submit a receipt for reimbursement or how you would like this handled.
3) Our gutters continue to leak and are killing the grass below. Many of the joints need to be resealed. I would welcome them to come out again and have them addressed. Please contact me to schedule an appointment.
4) We would appreciate a bundle of shingles, but as of 12/15/14 they have not been delivered.
5) To clarify, you did not make any concessions regarding this project. You mis-quoted the job with what vents were included with the level GAF product I purchased that required you to replace our existing vents/wood. I had a talk with your father in my driveway where he informed me of your mistake and what vents were going to be installed. The amount of wood rot on my roof was under the 3 included sheets per contract, not the 11 you tried to charge me for. Please acknowledge this mistake and stop passing the buck onto your customer.

I purchased a roof from ******** Roofing and Construction the end of September of 2012 in the amount of $13,468.00. The job was completed and paid in full around the end of November of that year. They were very good at selling their "Family owned company" but when it came to their quality of work and respect for our property, they fell short in every way. They neglected to roof over the chimney and when they came back out to do so, they didn't match the materials. The shingles are not lined up properly where they meet and we have many angles in our roofline, also the shingles do not lay flat. They are dimensional shingles, however, they should lay flatter than they do. When I questioned them about it, I was told that it takes several months of very hot weather for them to flatten out. We've had that, and they clearly have not done it. Thirdly, in the front of the house, on the second story, under one of the windows, they got tar on the siding. It looks terrible and even when I got the house painted, at several thousand dollars, it didn't cover it up. My neighbor asked me who did our roof, as if to say, in the nicest way, how badly it looked. I would never recommend them and they advertise in our subdivision's magazine and our neighborhood's mailer's frequently. I don't want them doing to my neighbors what they did to me. Their workmanship is sub-quality and does nothing to add to the value of one's property.

Good Day. We replaced this roof in 2012. There are no active leaks or functional issues with the roof. I had my senior tech come out to her house on 3/18/14 after we received a complaint from this customer on anther website. My most experienced, senior technician evaluated the roof (again). He found no issues with it. Her complaints are minor and aesthetic in nature around the chimney and a gap at her gutter near the pool cage where leaves get in - at which her husband repaired. We are not a pool cage contractor.

We left a door knocker that we were at her house, as no one was home. I even called personally and tried to follow up, but no one returned my call.

We will attempt to reach out again to resolve this matter.

Consumer Response
This response was provided verbally to BBB:

I never said anything about the roof leaking. I just said that the roof was poorly done and it was. They did replace the roof and they were the highest quote that we got but we went with them because they promoted themselves as Westfall Construction (not just a regular roofing company) and as being family owned and operated. I chose them because I told them at the time this wasn't a simple roof job. We have solar panels on almost the entire roof of the house, pool and hot water heater, they had to be taken off and then put back on. We also have the pool cage on part of the roof. We chose them because this wasn't just a simple roof job. They were very sloppy in the front of the house when they put tar on the roof. Yes, these are aesthetic things but it is the job as a whole. Just because the roof is functional doesn't mean the job as a whole is right. I tried to get them to address this right away when they finished the roof at the end of 2012.

The next issue came when we realized they did not replace the roofing material on the exterior chimney part. We did not notice it until they were already off the job site. My husband did call them and told them about the issue. They did come out and replaced the roof but when they put the strip that goes around the house (fascia I believe), we chose grey because it matched the house. When they came back to do the chimney they put white instead of grey so it sticks out and looks bad. I have complained to them about that but it hasn't been addressed.

As far as my husband repairing the gap in the gutter, he isn't a professional roofer but he tried to get up there and fix it anyways because they weren't coming back. This had to be fixed because leaves were getting into the pool area and could have stained the deck area. That issue has been addressed by us.

If they came out and left a flyer I was not aware of it. I did talk to someone from the company who was wonderful and I thanked her for listening to my concerns but they have never done anything to make this right. They market themselves very heavily in *********** ******* where I live and they are not the company they said they are.

I just want the trim on the chimney to match the rest of the house. The only other thing is with the tar on the roof but I have been told by a company who painted my house that there is nothing that can be done to get it off so I will have to live with that.
