Complaint
Because the codes for my yearly blood test were coded incorrectly I have been billed $395 by the lab.
I received a bill from ******** ********* lab for $395 for blood work I got done back on 4/19 in preparation for what I thought was my wellness visit with my doctor. When I called to ask why I was billed I was told it was because the blood work was not coded as "preventative" but instead as all different diagnosis so it was put under my deductible instead of treated as an annual blood test or wellness visit. The labs were done 4/19 and my first visit this year with Dr. ********* was 4/26. Once I got this bill I took it with me to my appointment on 9/5/13 and showed Dr. ** He said the office staff could correct it. All it takes according to ****** at ******** *********** is a simple call to correct the coding. I explained to one of the office staff what was needed and gave them the # of person they needed to call at the lab. A week later the lab had not been called. I personally stopped by the office and talked to another office staff and was told it would be handled. Again another two weeks go by and nothing. Finally ****** at the lab said she would call. She called Friday 9/27 and was told by the office manager ****** that they would not change the codes because "she said" my doctors appt was not a preventative visit. So if the full blood screen requested by the doctor is not for an annual exam or preventative purposes then what is it for? This had been only my 2nd visit to this doctor and the first for 2013. This has been incredibly frustrating and the worst customer service I have ever had from a doctor's office. And for what?? I already discussed this with the doctor and he was ok with changing it. He did not even know how it was coded in the first place. It is a simple mistake and can easily be fixed and would save me $395 because then our insurance would cover it. I am asking the BBB to help me figure out the best option to deal with this. I am also requesting that they log my concerns as a formal complaint against this office. Other people have the right to know how they can expect to be treated by this group.

I am asking that someone competant in that office contact ****** at ******** ********* and get the codes corrected. Her number is XXX-XXX-XXXX. Her fax is XXX-XXX-XXXX. Very simple!

Business Response
We have spoken to the patient as well as the laboratory. Six codes were re-coded as routine; however, patient was informed that there are several labs that cannot be re-coded as they were done for diagnostic reasons and would not be considered routine. He stated he understood. ***** advised him which labs are covered under "routine" labs for future reference. Additionally, there were other lab tests listed on this bill that were not ordered by Dr. ********** therefore, we are unable to have those codes changed. This was discussed with the patient and he indicated he did not know where those tests came from because he only had an order from our office. The manager of CPL as well as the manager from their billing department are going to pull the lab orders to find out who ordered these tests so we can get the other labs resolved if possible.

Final Business Response
I wanted to follow up with you to let you know we have finalized our research on this issue. As previously mentioned we have changed 6 of the lab codes to wellness codes and there were some remaining lab tests ordered by our physician that could not be changed because they were not deemed routine. The patient was advised of this and acknowledged he understood. He was also advised that there were additional labs on this same bill that were not ordered by our physician and we have contacted the lab to find out which doctor ordered these.

***** contacted the *** Billing Manager, ***** ******* to inquire as to who ordered these tests. According to *** they received a hand written order that was given to the patient from our office with multiple labs marked off. We obtained a copy of this order from *** which was written for a completely different facility ******** ************* with orders written in with multiple different hand writing. There were additional orders that were marked and written in on the form that we do not have documented in the patient's electronic medical record. The ordering physician was approached with a copy of this order to see if he recalled ordering them and he has indicated that he did not order all of these tests as there would not have been a reason for him to do so. He confirmed the only orders he would have made were in the patient's chart. The office manager at our ******** location confirmed her writing on the initial portion of the form, but stated that the additional tests added on after her were not her writing and she did not know where they came from.

We have notified the laboratory of the disputed orders and advised them that we do not know where these additional orders came from. The manager was extremely upset stating to ***** that we were accusing them of fraudulent billing to which she indicated we were not accusing anyone of anything. We were simply indicating our physician did not provide the orders for several of the tests that were run and that we could only provide billing codes for the tests we ordered. ***** indicated he would have to research this further.

At this point, I believe we have done everything we can do in our power to resolve this patient's lab bill. We have turned the final outcome of the remaining portion of the bill to *** to determine how they are going to resolve the disputed orders.
