On February 27, 2014 the BBB wrote this company regarding the firm’s recent surge in complaints alleging problems with advertising and selling practices and customer service. Consumer complaints allege nondisclosure for the basis of recent high rate increases, failure to explain introductory and variable rates during the initial sales call, bait and switch tactics pertaining to the promise of competitively priced rates as advertised, and inadequate customer service.
According to the complaints consumer's leave several messages with the company before the company returns the customer's phone call, if at all. Due to difficulties in contacting the company, consumer's feel compelled to file complaints with the BBB in order to have their issues addressed by the company. The company responses usually state that the customer voluntarily enrolled into a variable rate electric program in which prices may fluctuate monthly and is not guaranteed to be lower than the utility. In addition, the company states a welcome package is mailed to the customer, summarizing the variable rate program’s terms and conditions. Moreover, the company indicated that the wholesale price it paid for energy increased a great deal over the last several months.
