Description

Consumers across the country have raised questions about mailings received in the form of post cards offering further information if recipients sent in their phone number information.   The mailings lacked information about the sender, other than the contact point was a an address in Washington, DC    Checking with USPostal Service, the BBB found that the location was a mail forwarding address used by a marketing firm located in Texas.  When contacted about complaint issues concerning these mailings, National Processing Center indicated that it was a trade name used by America's Recommended Mailers as a lead generator for its customers.   The company states that it does not maintain mailing lists, but purchases a new list for each client mailing it makes.

Additional Complaint Information

Complaints filed by those who have received mailings report that some of the sendings implied possible government origination.  Company statements in reply to some of the complaints presented by the BBB referenced use of the Direct Mailing Association's Do Not Mail list.  The difficulty that is not addressed is that consumers would not generally know or be able to trace the connection of national Processing Center to the America's Recommended Mailing firm.

Mailings sent through the National Processing Center are marketing offerings from various companies.  If a consumer returns the completed card from the mailing, they may be contacted by phone or in person about the issue or product referenced in the original mailing.  National Processing Center advises those who do not want to receive these solicitations that they need to be placed on the do not call list of the Direct Marketing Association.  The company states that it scrubs its mailings against that list for each of its client mailings.

Additional Information

According to information in BBB files, consumers report receiving mailings offering information about senior issues and seeking general information to be returned on an enclosed card. As always, the BBB advises care in sharing personal information with unknown parties. Over the years, the mailings have indicated that the targeted seniors receiving the mailing can request information or contact by providing their phone number and returning the mailer.   Recent versions of the mailings indicate it can provide information about Social Security tax changes. Previously, the mailings focused on asset protection for estates and other financial offerings. Although the mailings indicate that there is no affiliation with a government agency, it fails to provide any company name or phone number so that recipients would know who they were dealing with.

Complaint: Received mailing from this company. Based on appearance of the mailing they were trying to make it look like they were officially representing Medicare.... implying that they could "help" me deal with supposed reductions in Medicare. Their offer of "more information" about changes and how they will affect my health care coverage, they are targeting Seniors who may not understand that it is a SCAM!!! Just wanting this reported!

Desired Settlement: Put them out of business! Warn Seniors to beware of this type of mailings!

Consumer Response: Yes I assume that was unrealistic.  Ask to be removed from any mailing list of the company.   Also if there is a way to WARN senior citizens about this type of scam that would be nice.

Consumer Response: [To assist us in bringing this matter to a close, you must give us a reason why you are rejecting the response. If no reason is received your complaint will be closed Administratively Resolved]

 Complaint: *******

I am rejecting this response because:  It was kind of you to explain however I still believe your mailing is designed to lead seniors to believe that you represent Medicare.  While it may be "legal"  I do not believe it is ethical or in the best interest of helping seniors.

I appreciate your explanation of how to stop receiving mailings and I will do that,  however I am not the one who is going to "fall for"  your marketing tactics.

Regards,

******* ******

Complaint: I got a card in a secure envelope, from the noted company, without any return contact information; other than a return mailing address. The company wanted me to sign up for funeral/life insurance; with a mislead of benefits, without policy terms, without policy fees, and without a way to contact anyone individual representative. I actually found the noted company on 411.com reverse address find, with three possible contacts by phone, but when I tried calling there was no such number for each number; and no forwarding or referencing information was available for each number. This is not the first time I have received this card, however I threw previous one away, but I'll keep this one.

Desired Settlement: If this company doesn't stop bothering me, and others like me, they get jail time.

BBB's Final Determination: Business offered a resolution. Consumer did not pursue further with BBB and the matter was assumed to be resolved
