The Better Business Bureau of Utah (BBB) turns 100 this year. To commemorate the occasion, Governor Gary Herbert has declared June 12, 2013 as Better Business Day in Utah.
An article in Salt Lake Business, July 1966, states that the Business Men’s Alliance started in 1913, “as a committee of the Chamber of Commerce to protect chamber members from solicitations of all types. The committee advised the Chamber members on the reliability of certain charities and promotions.”
In 1963, the Business Men’s Alliance became the Better Business Bureau of Greater Salt Lake and later expanded its coverage to the entire state of Utah.
The BBB has 2900 businesses that maintain the high standards required for accreditation. With a staff of 19 the BBB helped more than 16,000 consumers who had disputes with Utah businesses in 2012. In addition, more than 1.9 million BBB business and charity reviews (on Utah businesses) were provided, mostly through www.bbb.org, to help consumers make informed purchasing decisions. The BBB also contacts advertisers about questionable advertisements and investigates questionable business practices, reporting scams to alert the public.
