Scammers Preying on the Unemployed

The high unemployment rate nationwide allows for a perfect opportunity for scammers to steal personal and credit information.

Walletpop reports of an incident in Dayton, Ohio where a scammer sent emails to unemployed people offering a job with a local construction company. This email looked official and it even had a fake BBB Accredited Business seal on it. Many potential employees had their credit and personal information stolen by this method.

BBB warns potential employees to never submit bank information to companies until you've been hired formally and never send personal information by clicking email links. It is important to always check with your local BBB to see that the company you are applying to is a legitimate workplace and not a scam.
