Report: iPad Costs Under $260 to Build

Apple's tablet computer went on sale last Saturday with a starting price of $499, but research firm ISuppli Corp. found that the device may only cost $259.60 to build. What makes the iPad price so expensive?

Its two major components: an LCD touch screen display and processor. The screen, which is manufactured by Samsung, requires a glass overlay that detects touch activity. Other costly components include flash memory chips, also supplied by Samsung. 

While Apple designed the iPad's processor, Samsung specifically built a chip for it and an additional extra memory chip for less than $27.
