Internet Crime Complaint Center Issues Warning to Businesses Regarding Online Job Postings

The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) issued a press release last week alerting businesses of scam emails coming from online job postings. Scammers are responding to job e-mails with malicious malware that can infiltrate a computer, allowing the scammer to access confidential information regarding the company.

In a recent example, more than $150,000 was stolen from a business via unauthorized wire transfer due to a malware e-mail that changed the business’s account settings.

The "other" Kathy responding to the Villacom LTD information of course was 100% correct. After I posted my other comment, as my name was Kathy also, my response was much longer! I went back and read some much more disturbing "catches" people should delete the e-mail as soon as they see them. Here's an ad from a guy who claims he's "hard of hearing" so prefers to do business my e-mail. RED LIGHT! More Red Lights: A successful business person is not going to say "I will be a good boss" at the beginning as you read this whole e-mail you will read information regarding the job, then it throws in some very odd statements hoping for "sympathy" for him as a boss, then goes on to create an extremely long resume, again reading between the lines there just are extremely odd requests that should not make sense to anyone to apply for this job. Stating that "you" will be receiving a money order to purchase items for an "orphanage", RED LIGHT right there, and there isn't any sense going on but this e-mail obviously was created and sent from over seas. They want YOU to cash that money order through YOUR bank and of course it will not clear. Sure your bank will reimburse you for the check, but your also must file a complaint and unauthorized use of some kind. They wrote that up a little sneaky because you would be taking the bank personally to your bank. But whoever sent you the check, yes they will get their money, but the money order isn't any good. Another way to confirm that is to have your bank "verify" the money order first. NO business will do business this way. It's just so glorifying, so to speak, that it wraps the potential prospect into assuming they'll be getting paid right away and actually they don't even know you. JUST DON'T DO IT! Talking about buying "kids stuff", not to mention I'm assuming the e-mail was attached and you can tell by broken sentences and obvious missing spellings are RED LIGHTS. In all, everyone that has questioned any of those sites do not seem valid. My previous response has much clearer information on finding work in your area and/or even at home. Try those things first. As they say, keep your business within your own city, to keep jobs and business locally. Use your local resources!

I've worked with people for several years and actually in my business when working. I'm now on disability due to MS; however, still help friends with resumes and jobs. I still am a firm believer in using your city where you live for "their" local newspaper online jobs or your local radio station. Best of all use your local temporary agency. A temp agency at least does most of the "looking for a job" for you. Careerbuilders.com isn't bad, but you must be really specific in the area you are looking for a job. They provide you a list of businesses in your local area hiring based on your resume that you submit when you sign up. You are provided a listed of possible job opportunities in the area you requested. There is NO questions regarding approving a credit check. Geez that's pretty much common sense, or should be. Approving a credit check provides that person with all your vital statistics needed to make your life a mess. Sorry, I shouldn't really say "pretty much common sense", as we all do make mistakes and with the economy these days your common sense is pretty much stressed and sometimes what you read and check AND don't forget the forms you receive that have those little small lines "authorizing" whatever. You must watch out for those boxes and make sure anything is UNCHECKED before submitting it. I would say, that's where many were caught in a scam because I've seen tiny boxes in the right hand corner sometimes under their advertising, it's almost hidden. Word or mouth to any and all of your friends. Manpower Employment Services, Express Employment Professionals, check at any local colleges for job listings, even walk into your local county offices - they often have web sites for jobs. I can caution you of the "work at home" sales, you will consistently find NONE of these businesses are valid. You will even find them in the Yellow Pages under "Employment" learning how to make "big profits" at home. There is one particular ad thatis fairly large for SMC (you will also find it on cable channels) which is supported by actor Tim Bosley. SMC you must purchase materials to teach you different methods and it cost more to purchase other things, so maybe not a "scam"; however, the results vary extremely! Ads like that which you also find on your cable channels, the best thing to do there is check the BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU, www.bbb.org Actually the BBB is still the best source of any back ground check you want to make and you will be surprised what you find. Don't forget employer's will verify information you provide them, so actually any job you are applying for you should do your homework ahead also and learn as much about the company as you can first. Bottom line, the main question about "Earning Big Profits At Home", don't even go there. One thing you can do though, sell things on Ebay, YOU have control there. Good luck, it's not easy out there, but there is hope! Keep trying and if a temporary job comes up, take it even if it's not what you are looking for at the time, you will find it's still a better source to obtain employment opportunities. If you are working for a temp agency, they check the companies out first and maybe a company needs someone for a week or two because someone is on vacation. This opens the door to possibilities.

My daughter found a position for a "Team Assitant" on Craigs List. I am trying to determine if it is legitimate. below is the email received from the proposed employer: Your resume was received and it has been reviewed, I did appreciate it. it's reasonable and acceptable. So I will give this a go. I'm looking for someone that can be trusted and reliable, someone with good understanding and working skills. I am Jon Williams , 49 yrs of age, I'm Self employed..I am an importer by profession and I have been pretty successful in a handful of ventures I get involved in; from the Angel of importing fabrics to various welfare and community service programs. I most very often get my hands occupied, so it is imperative for me to have a worthy assistant who can monitor and keep me up to date with my activities. This position is home-based and flexible, working with me is basically about instructions and following them. My only fear is that I may come at you impromptu sometimes, so i need someone who can be able to meet up with my irregular timings. As my personal assistant, your activities among others will include: *Create and modify documents using Microsoft Office *Running personal errands, supervisions and monitoring. *Scheduling programmes, flights and keeping me up to date with them. *Acting as an alternative telephone correspondence while I'm away. *Making regular contacts and drop-offs on my behalf. *Handling and monitoring some of my financial activities.. *Basic wage is $700 a week . QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: *Good planning, communication and organization skills *Must be honest, reliable & dependable *Excellent verbal & written communication skills *Must have strong problem solving skills *Must be organized & extremely detail oriented *Experience working with the internet, email. *Ability to multi-task and self manage 24/7 mindset *A willingness to do whatever needs to be done is a must NOTE: The above qualification requirements can also be learnt if you are willing to take up the challenges. I'm sure you'll understand I tend to have a very busy schedule at this point as I am presently in France for a summit. I will be back in Three Weeks time. I think you're the right person for this post, Please note that this position is not office based for now because of my frequent travels and tight schedules. It's a part-time, work from home basis and the flexibility means that there will be busier weeks than others. So it's a little difficult judging the exact number of hours you'll be doing per week. If you can manage your time properly, this job may even give you some extra while you do something else on the side. As I have said, I'd want us to get a head start with things as soon as possible. I do have a pile up of work and a number of unattended chores which you can immediately assist me with. I hope we can meet up with the workload eventually. Permit me to use the coming week to test your efficiency and diligence towards all this, also to work out your time schedule and fit it to mine. I really need to find the perfect person for this job and i am confident you can take up the challenges. On the long run we should have a relatively sound working relationship between us.I'm online most of the time as I am hard of hearing so I prefer we contact each other through E-mails but if there is need for me to call, I will be glad to do that. I am glad you are willing to work with me and i promise to be a good boss. I am also glad on the commitment in working. I have been checking my files and what i would want you to do for me next week is to run some errands out to some of the orphanage home which I do every month. The funds will be in form of Cashier check, it will be sent over to you from one of my clients and i have some list to email you once you received the funds. You will make some arrangements by buying some stuff for the kids in the nearest store around you so you can mail them out. I will get you more information on that. PLEASE FILL THE APPLICATION FORM BELOW; First Name : Last Name : Full Street Address(Not PO BOX): City, State, Zip Code : Cell Phone Number: Home Phone Number: Current Occupation : Email Address : Once I have received your application form, I will get back to you with the task for next week. Please understand that you will also be paid as well as its important for me to make the necessary steps before i get back from my business trip. I hope i am clear with that? NOTE: This position is home-based and flexible part time job, you can be in any location, work from your home doing all the activities. AVAILABILITY: How often do you check your email daily___________ Please get back as soon as possible. Jon Williams.

I am doing research into finding out how to find out about legitimate work at home businesses. I am disabled and receiving ssi, which doesn't even begin to pay to bills. Companies are writing me all the time about all these opportunities for work at home situations, but after further investigation into the offers, they seem suspicious. There must be some legitimate work at home companies, but how do I get to the ones that are legitimate. Any assistance in this endeavour would be greatly appreciated. I need some additional income or will find myself living in a refrigerator box under the interstate. I have always been a hard worker and just need to know where to go to get a legitimate work at home position. PLEASE HELP. GOD BLESS TO ALL AND BE SAFE. Thanks, Wendu

Recently, there has been a lot of media coverage about a stay at home mom making money online. This ad is in your ok list of possible legite online home jobs. Michelle who is the perso that guarantees this web site to be true is the signature trainer to the program. I am a senior citizen on Social Security Disability. I live on a fixed income that bearly allows me to live respectfully toward the end of the month without asking my daughter for additional food. I am online with the Chicago's School of Professional Psychology/Forensic Psychology is my graduate master study program. As you can imagine living on $1,000/mo in today's economy does'nt give me any room to breath, grasping for air I pray I don't die yet because I don't even have enough to buy a burial fund so my daughter and grandsons will be able to front the bill. This does not cover a good retirement as well. I feel like I am living on the edge, asking myself what happened to the years when I worked 2 jobs 20 years of my life. Where did all that go? I have searched and searched and have been beaten and victimized by a system that puts out false ads even thou its backed up by BBB. The plain truth to it all is that no matter what it cost some of these business, partners are all like vouchers trying to sell a product to make money. They could care less about the economy nor my commit. Because they will continue to make that fast buck on their false ads until someone gets enough guts and takes these fast track make bucks systems businesses to court and prosecute them. I am particularly talking about this ad on posting links. The ad first starts that way, but as you get into it you have to pay additional money for the places that will pay you to link or post a link. The confusing facter is that its not about posting links. It turns out to be about purchase of a Certified Program that has absolutely nothing to do with postin links. This ad is false advertising. I am going to further reasearch and look for the fine prink that covers or secures themselves from people like me who will take them to court if BBB does nothing. Your comments are appreaciated to Alma Teresa Turrubiate, latinaameri@yahoo.com Thank you for your time. Total loss in the last five years for me are $749.95.

I replied with my resume in a PDF format to, what was listed on craigslist as, a "family owned car dealership" receptionist job... and David howser of villacom limited responded with that same mumbo jumbo about needing a credit score, etc. What a filthy scam to be playing on people trying to find work. I'm just worried knowing that I submitted my resume to this person... yuck! I think I'll go back to using Temp agencies for work in the future.

I agree wtih Kathy, this website seems like a scam website and I have never heard of one needds a credit check when applying for a regular job, not even a govern type of job or nor a well known financial instution. Also, that person actually emails and asks to use his prefered method of obtaining credit scores = scam if you see villacom limited/creditcheckcentral, ignore and move on

REPLY TO VILLACOM LTD... This is an email from the job search From: David Hower <davidhower@villacomlimited.com> To: ME Sent: Fri, January 28, 2011 6:55:01 PM Subject: Re: Application for Admin Assistant (Edgewood) Hello, Thank you for sending your resume to me. So the job responsibilities are clear, you will be answering the phone, scheduling meetings, and running company errands such as buying office supplies and making bank deposits in a company car. When running errands you will be provided with a company credit card to make supply purchases, etc. We have had some bad experiences with prior employees taking advantage of having access to a company credit card in the past, so before we can schedule an interview, we need you to get a credit check. We prefer you use http://creditcheckcentral.org/freepromo1 to obtain this information as they currently have a free trial. We have also found their reports most accurate. When you submit your information they will send you your credit score. When you email me your credit score, we can schedule for an interview. Please do not email me your credit report, as this may have private information in it. If you have a low credit score, that will not prevent you from having an interview with us, but it does show us that you are trustworthy and responsible. Please send me your schedule with availability for an interview along with your credit score. I am looking forward to your response. Sincerely, David Hower HR Manager Villacom Limited

I recently applied for a position from Craigslist. A receptionist for an "investment" company. I received a reply asking me to have a credit check done with an company I have never heard of. I googled the "credit check" company, creditcheckcentral.org, it does not exist. I googled the Investment company Villacom Ltd. and the only solid info was that it was a scam.
