Around this time of the year, companies send their holiday catalogues and often, they can flood up consumer's mail boxes.   Thankfully, there is a way to stop those catalogues from coming in, according to Action Line

The Direct Marketing Association's Mail Preference Service lets you opt out of receiving unsolicited commercial mail from national companies for up to five years.

How it works: When you register with this service, your name will be put on a "delete" file  that will be made available to direct-mail marketers. However, organizations that do not use the DMA's Mail Preference will not get the list – so you may continue to get unsolicited mail and the process of deleting your name takes up to three months.    If sign up with the service online, it's free.

To register with the service, go to www.dmachoice.org. Also, the FTC publishes a free brochure on Shopping by Phone or Mail. For a list of publications, visit ftc.gov
