The FTC consumer fraud numbers for 2009 are out and in a nutshell, it’s all good news. Really. Let’s take a closer look.
In the Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book, the FTC reports that consumer complaints increased to 1.3 million — 100,000 more than the year before. And you’re probably thinking, “Oh my, that’s just awful.” But this is a good thing. And here’s why: It means more consumers than ever before are taking the time and making the effort to file a complaint with law enforcement, state attorneys general and their Better Business Bureaus.
There’s more good news. Although consumers reported paying more than $1.7 billion in reported fraud complaints, that figure is down from 2008. The average monetary fraud loss in 2009 was $399; in 2008 it was $440.
