
Next month, The Federal Communications Commission will unveil plans for a National
Broadband Plan, according to
Channel Web.
The goal of nationwide broadband is to give Americans affordable high-speed internet access. The U.S. is currently ranked 14th in the world for users with broadband access. More importantly, access to broadband Internet will allow consumers to find jobs at home and compete in a digital economy.
In addition to making broadband more affordable, the FCC also wants it to be faster:
up to 100 megabits per second by 2020. Currently broadband internet is packaged with other subscriptions and subscribers pay an average of $40.68 per month. If broadband is not grouped with another service, it costs subscribers even more: $46.25 per month.
The plan which will be released on St. Patrick's Day is estimated to give 90 million users broadband Internet access.
