There's one more product from China that could force homeowners to abandon their home: bad drywall. The drywall in question, known as plasterboard or gypsum, gives off a sour or “rotten egg” odor that irritates eyes, skin and causes breathing irritation, nosebleeds as well as corrosion of copper pipes, electrical wiring and in air conditioners, according to MSN.
While the use of these imported drywalls was thought to be used mainly in Florida and in Louisiana, complaints have come in from other states as well. Amid consumer complaints, Knauf Plasterboard Tianjin Co., one of the major Chinese manufacturers says that their tests show that their drywall is not harmful to consumers, MSN reported. The U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating.
The price tag for replacing the drywall is costly: about $100,000 to pull the bad drywall and replace corroded electrical wiring. In the meantime, consumers are left with a hard decision: abandon their home or stay and pay for the drywall to be removed.
