Don't Wait to Get Flood Insurance

Do you have flood insurance? If not, you might want to think about getting it with premiums as low as $120 a year. Your home doesn't have to be in a designated flood plain in order to qualify for federal flood insurance.

Homeowners need to know that standard homeowners and business owners insurance policies exclude flooding caused by water coming from outside the building, according to KOMO News.

"Whether it's from a dam breaking in this case or from standard flooding, snow melt, heavy rains, you would not have coverage," Karl Newman, President of the NW Insurance Council told KOMO.

Newman says renters at risk also need to consider flood insurance for the contents of their apartment.

Flooding is not covered by standard property insurance. Contact your insurance agent for flood insurance information. Property owners can insure buildings and contents, and renters can insure their possessions. Elevation certificates may be on file at your local County Department of Water Resources. Remember, you do not have to live in a floodplain to qualify for flood insurance. According to FEMA, 30 percent of flood claims are not located within a SFHA. http://www.waterdamageout.com
