Don’t Let Anti-Virus Software Fool You

If you own a Windows computer and have an anti-virus software like McAfee or Norton, users still run a risk of being exposed to fake anti-virus software, according to KOMO News

How is that possible when you already have an anti-virus software installed on your computer?  Through pop-up ads.  These so called virus scams inform you that your computer is infected by countless viruses and the only way for you to get rid of the viruses is to download a free scan to remove them.

Users should never do this because while you may think you're helping your computer, you're actually doing more harm.  If you already have a recognized anti-virus software like McAfee or Norton, you don't need to download a generic one to remove viruses.  Secondly, the generic anti-virus software could be a virus itself or a way for hackers to get at your personal information.

The next time you see a pop up for to download a trial anti-virus software to clean your computer, the best thing you can do is restart your computer.  Once it is booted up again, the pop up will be gone.
