Data Breaches Skyrocket

Reported data breaches are up tremendously since numerous states adopted new data breach notification laws in 2005 and 2006, according to the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The Open Security Foundation, a Virginia nonprofit that collects information about data breaches, said there were 61 reported breaches combined between 2001 and 2004. In 2005, the number hit 121 and since then, have exceeded 500 per year.

Many companies have been dealing with lawsuits from angry consumers victimized by the beaches.
