Census May Create Identity Theft Opportunities

The next phase of the 2010 Census begins next year and the Better Business Bureau wants to remind consumers to be watchful of criminals posing as Census Bureau officials. Responding to the census is mandatory but people should be aware of what they cannot be asked, such as social security numbers, bank accounts and credit card information.

The only questions Census Bureau officials are authorized to ask, by mail or in person, are name, gender, race, ethnicity, relationships to others in the household and whether you own or rent your home. Also, the Census Bureau never contacts citizens by e-mail or asks for donations and consumers should be especially cautious if contacted after dark.

They are also asking for date of birth as well as age. The age should be sufficient. Why do they need the names if they are mainly interested in number of people living in the home. What information can we leave out and still be in compliance? What exactly do we have to give to the minimum? pLEASE LET ME know. Thank you John

This statement only pertains to the 2010 form and follow-up operations that will start in March 2010: 'The only questions Census Bureau officials are authorized to ask, by mail or in person, are name, gender, race, ethnicity, relationships to others in the household and whether you own or rent your home.'

The U.S. Census Bureau also conducts many surveys about unemployment, inflation, health, crime, housing, and other important statistics. Addresses are randomly selected for these other monthly studies.

Also note the link to the Chico Enterprise Record does not work. They likely retracted the article.
