Can I Return It? Taking a Look at Return Policies

Posted Wednesday, August 04, 2010 in Retail Stores/Products

Recently your BBB received a call from a person who was upset because he was not able to return a car hood that he had ordered.

The part arrived damaged but the company’s return policy states that the package must be opened in front of the delivery person to prove the part was damaged in shipping. Unfortunately, this consumer had someone else sign for the package who did not open it at the time of delivery.

Many people think there is a law governing return policies. Not so. They are determined by the business. Subsequently the policies differ a lot regardless of whether you buy online or from a brick and mortar store. These policies should be posted where you buy the item --- online or in a store. It is your responsibility as a customer to read the return policies.

Some companies say that all returns have to be made within 30 days from purchase and you must have your receipt. In addition, they may restrict the return credit to be used only for in-store purchases. There could also be a restocking fee.

Why all these differences? It’s a company’s way of handling the cost of doing business. Return transactions do cost the company money. These costs vary with the item and the type of business.

Several years ago, businesses that sell evening gowns initiated a tougher return policy. If the tags had been removed from the gown it could not be returned. Why did they adopt this return policy? Because women were wearing the gown once then returning it to the store to get their money back. You will probably see more businesses going to this type of return policy, such as high end jewelry and shoes.

On August 16th I purchased with cash, 2 pillow pets(unicorn, bunny) from a kiosk in the Meriden Mall CT. The next day August 17th I exchanged the bunny for a dalmation because the bunnys' ear had torn off. The next day the unicorn got a tear in the body and I sewed it back together. The following day The dalmation got a rip under the belly and both my children were sad a crying. I sewed them up again. Finally, on August 23rd, the 7th day after purchasing the pets, I went back to the mall where I purchsed them and told the employee that I wanted a refund. She informed me that there were no refunds and that they exchanged once already and would not exchange again. I informed her of the situation and also told her that it was not our fault that these pets were falling apart. She still turned me away and called security to tell me to leave. I went to mall management and made a report of the poorly made pillow pets and told her everything that had happened since I purchased them. I am asking for a refund from the company directly. I plan on telling all of my friends about these cheaply made pets and going into the mall each and every weekend to let other shoppers aware of what happened to us so that it in turn does not happen to them. It is not fair to my children that they have to own these poorly made products. Unsatisfied Customer in Connecticut. Angela Peterson P.O. Box 236 Ansonia, CT. 06401 760-265-2121

I went to McDonalds for coffee in Nashville,Georgia and was charged for each sugar and creamer package for my coffee !! I really thought Condiments for coffee were free. I went to Hardee's the next morning for coffee and asked them if they charged for cream and sugar, the graciously told me no they do not. Thank you Hardee's. I will never buy coffee from McDonalds again !! Not to mention they never change their oil so the fries and chicken are always bitter and taste burned. This bad experience has been with the Nashville, Georgia McDonalds only. I think it is poor management.

we were at Glamor shots in Appelton Wisconsin. They told us we would get a free sitting including make up and hair. but when it came to cheekout time the lady said it was $19.95 for me and my daughter who was under 12 which only cost $9.95 . then the lady said that there are no refunds or returns. pressured us into ordering something and was very rude. would not let us order only one picture she said we had to order a package. One of my friends who went there said she only order one picture. the prices were outragous. The lady who was supose to be helping us rolled her eyes at my daughter several times because she keep saying she would be late for babysitting. The lady gave us a slide show that we orderd of all our pictures and when we put it into the computer and dvd play had nothing on it but music. i will not be going back to Glamor shots agin!!!!!!!!!!
