Watch Out for Fake Bernie Madoff Auctions

A lot of people lost money in the Bernie Madoff scandal and it seemed like the perfect revenge when items were confiscated and being sold at auction, allowing consumers to get back their money. Now, thieves are taking the Madoff auction block to the next level, according to NBC Miami.

One auction house, Coral Springs is auctioning of Madoff items but the in reality, many of the items on the block did not belong to Madoff. Sadly, there are many fake Madoff auctions along the east coast, from New York to Miami with the U.S. Marshals and authorities questioning their authenticity.

Before going to a Madoff auction, check out the website. If it has missing contact information or is poorly put together, then most likely it is a scam. The Better Business Bureau also advises consumers to check out BBB’s reliability report online or download the BBB’s Accredited Business Locator so you can avoid being scammed.

We've also seen these scams in North Carolina. One auction was actually canceled in Greensboro on Sunday- http://www.news-record.com/content/2010/01/10/article/madoff_auction_mirrors_the_man.
