Be Cautious When Paying For Credit Reports

You may have seen commercials for freecreditreport.com on TV, with the guy singing about how he didn't know he had a bad credit report because his was identity stolen and now lives in his mother's basement or works at a seafood restaurant as a bus boy.    Sites like freecreditreport.com allow users to put in their personal information and pay a fee so they can access their credit report, according to The Atlantic Business Journal.

At a glance, it looks like a legitimate company because they have a commercial and a website but consumers should be asking themselves: why do I have to pay to look at my credit report from an outside source when I have free access to my credit report already?

Consumers should be very wary of outfits like freecreditreport.com mostly because they are an outside, third party with access to your information which can be abused and possibly lead to identity theft.

You'd think that 'freedreditreport.com' would be shut down for _fraud by the FTC.
Apparently someone at the FTC is being paid off _or our tax dollars are being wasted as the FTC has no power to stop crooks from scamming Americans.

I got scammed by freecreditreport.com. I never would have noticed except I received an email congratulating me on my membership in their credit monitoring service. I disputed the charges with my credit card issuer and filed complaints with the Federal Trade Commission and the North Carolina Attorney General. The December 1 issue of Bottom Line Personal reports that complaints to the BBB now number 10,000 at press time. Remember, for a really free credit report go to the FTC-mandated site: www.annualcreditreport.com

But their commercials are so catchy...that guy singing about having to work at a seafood restaurant!

I think the vast majority of consumers out there are ignorant as to how to access their annual free credit reports at all and freecreditreport.com seems like the only way to do so.
