Affected by the Epsilon Security Breach: What You Should Know

Posted Tuesday, April 05, 2011 in Computers-Internet-Technology

Yesterday, we told you about the Epsilon email security breach. Here are some tips from AOL Daily Finance if you receive an unsolicited email.

• Visit the website that supposedly sent the email in a new browser window. Make sure it is promoting the same offer in the email.

• Put your mouse over the link in the email and look at the lower left corner of the screen to make sure the domain name matches the company that is allegedly sending the email.

• If the link must be clicked, it should still show the same domain name. If it doesn’t, and it asks for your financial information such as bank account number, social security number, etc. Do not provide it. If the link has a different domain name, it may be trying to infect your computer with a virus.

• Keep your security software up to date.

• Most importantly, avoid clicking on any links or opening attachments from unsolicited emails.

I recently discovered that almost everyone in my MSN email address book had been sent, supposedly from me, a link to a Canadian drug site for Viagra, I certainly did NOT send it, switched my email to 'gmail' and notified everyone. Now I can't even sign in to 'My MSN' and given the error message that I'm using the incorrect password. I'm using the same password I've always used for that particular site. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. CR

Thanks BBB for the information. We got an email from one of the companies telling us about the breach but they downplayed the loss, when in fact, they did lose substantial data. Appreciate some new tips to try to identify what could be scam emails. Reagrds, Juanda
