One of the best ways consumers and small businesses can minimize their vulnerability to identity theft and fraud is in the responsible and secure destruction of data containing their personal information.
To promote this behavior -- and help to make it routine -- the BBB has created BBB "Secure Your ID" Days, a national-scale coordinated community shred event, which will be held in BBB markets coast-to-coast across North America in the spring and the fall of each year, beginning in 2008.
BBB has been a longstanding consumer protection educator and marketplace advocate, helping consumers and small business owners protect against identity theft and fraud. Through this new national initiative, BBB will take its identity protection programs to a new level by providing consumers and small business owners with identity theft protetion "best-practices" education, in addition to a free service to safely and securely destroy their sensitive information.
BBB's national partners in this intiative is Equifax and the National Association for Information Destruction (NAID), and its members of certified commercial shred service providers.
