Steps to Take to Avoid Receiving Unwanted Calls

While more than 150 million numbers have been added to the National Do Not Call Registry, the Better Business Bureau continues to get calls from people who aren't aware of this resource. The registry began in 2003 to give consumers a choice on telemarketing calls. It's managed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). If you decide to register your number, telemarketers covered by the registry have 31 days to comply and stop calling you. If they continue to call you, they can be fined thousands of dollars.

BBB, Schumer Warn Consumers of Robocalls Promising to Lower Their Credit Card Interest Rate

Consumers across the U.S. and Canada are sounding off to Better Business Bureau about incessant automated telemarketing calls promising to lower interest rates on their credit cards. Not only are the calls a nuisance and violate U.S. and Canadian Do-Not-Call laws, but some companies behind the calls are ripping off consumers by charging large up-front fees to negotiate lower interest rates with credit card companies—something consumers can do on their own for free.

The Power of an Urban Myth E-mail

Recently several e-mails concerning the proposed Wireless 411 service received wide distribution. One e-mail claimed that beginning January 2005 all cell phone numbers will be made public to telemarketing firms. It also stated that consumers’ cell phones would be inundated with calls from telemarketers. And, that these telemarketers will eat up your free minutes and could end up costing you money. The e-mail goes on to say that you had until December 15, 2004 to get your cell phone number on the National Do-Not-Call list. A person could call either 1.888.382.1222 from the cell phone they wish to have put on the list or that person can do it online at www.donotcall.gov.

FTC - Complying with the Telemarketing Sales Rule

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued the amended Telemarketing Sales Rule (TSR) on January 29, 2003. Like the original TSR issued in 1995, the amended Rule gives effect to the Telemarketing and Consumer Fraud and Abuse Prevention Act. This legislation gives the FTC and state attorneys general law enforcement tools to combat telemarketing fraud, give consumers added privacy protections and defenses against unscrupulous telemarketers, and help consumers tell the difference between fraudulent and legitimate telemarketing.

Hold the Phone! Do Not Call!

Sometimes getting a call at home from a telemarketer exposes you to a product or service that you might not have otherwise known about, and you're glad you answered the phone. Unfortunately, most people view telemarketing calls as an intrusion on their time and privacy. The hue and cry over unwelcome telemarketing calls has led the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to create a national database listing phone numbers of consumers who want to block unsolicited calls to their home and cells phones.
