Seniors nationwide are reporting scam phone calls informing them that a new Medicare card is in the mail. Hang up on suspicious callers and don't fall for this attempt to obtain your personal information.

A consumer recently contacted us to help determine if a call she received was a scam. The caller offered to send her new Medicare cards, including one that offered extra benefits, then asked for the name of her bank. The consumer wisely hung up and contacted us.
It’s a scam that some seniors fall for. The crooks claim to represent Medicare or another government agency and ask consumers to update information in order to receive their Medicare cards or benefits. If the crooks can get banking information, they’ll use it to commit identity theft.

As of January 1, 2006, everyone with Medicare, regardless of income or health status, will have access to prescription drug coverage. The enrollment period began November 15, 2005 and private companies that have been approved by Medicare to provide the benefits were permitted to begin marketing their plans October 1, 2005. Each company will follow Medicare guidelines, but they will differ in such aspects as the drugs they cover, the costs and where the drugs can be obtained.

With the high cost of medicine, a new government program is supposed to help cut prescription costs for seniors and people with disabilities who have no other drug coverage. The Medicare discount drug program will begin in June 2004, allowing seniors to pick and chose from a number of discount drug cards approved by Medicare.
