BBB Warns of Asphalt Paving Scam Hitting SE Wisconsin

August 11, 2011, Milwaukee, Wis — The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to be on the lookout for James Joles Asphalt Paving. He could be knocking on your door and you don’t want to be his next victim.

Joles is hitting neighborhoods throughout Southeastern Wisconsin stating he has “extra” asphalt left over from other jobs, offering cut-rate prices and building the impression that he’s a local company.

The Better Business Bureau warns that is not the case.

Joles uses an Oak Creek address of 6508 S. 27th Street, Suite 9, #116.  But a BBB investigation has found that this address is of a “UPS store” and James Joles is renting box 116.  The Milwaukee and Madison phone numbers Joles provides are cell phone numbers.

The Better Business Bureau has taken more than forty inquiries on James Joles Asphalt Paving in the last month and has processed four complaints since October, 2010. Three complaints have been received in the last six weeks.  All of the complaints have gone unanswered.

“Unfortunately, we see this type of scam arise every year in Wisconsin when the weather warms up” said Ran Hoth, Wisconsin BBB president/CEO.  “This is a common ploy of traveling crews who go from state to state, using trucks as their point of business.  Their work is shoddy and customers can’t reach them after they finish the job.”

Greg S. says he paid $1000 in cash and $600 by check and says there are several issues with the work performed.  “The asphalt is so thin it flaked off and I have gravel spots…I have grass coming up through the asphalt, pine cones mixed in the asphalt leaving holes, a bunjee strap coming up through the asphalt and I cannot park my vehicle on the driveway because it leaves sink spots.”

An 81-year-old Oak Creek woman says a man walked up her driveway saying he had “leftover sealer.”  When he asked for payment, he even called her bank to make sure she had the money in her account.  She says, “They damaged the side of the trim on my garage…I was shocked at the price of $3,240.” She says she feels “robbed.” 

The BBB reminds consumers to be suspicious of salespersons approaching them at their home, offering a service and asking for cash payments.  Always ask for a business card with the company’s name, address and phone number.  Check out the company with the Better Business Bureau.  Check to see if it has the necessary business licenses and ask for customer references.  Never feel pressured to make a decision immediately and never pay in cash.  If you feel suspicious, call your local police department to report the incident.
