April 29, 2008 -Arlington, VA- Better Business Bureaus across the U.S. and Canada are coordinating a community service event to fight ID theft on Saturday, May 3, 2008, and provide consumers and small businesses the tools and advice they need to protect themselves every day. BBB is partnering nationally with Equifax. Secure shredding services on the day of the event will be provided by members of the National Association of Information Destruction (NAID), the industry’s trade organization.
“This is the first time BBB has orchestrated an event on this scale to fight ID theft in the U.S. and Canada,” said Steve Cole, President and CEO of the Council of Better Business Bureaus. “The first rule in identity protection is to responsibly destroy documents you don’t really need that contain personal identifiers. But it doesn’t end there. Identity protection needs to become an everyday habit.” That’s why BBBs will also distribute take-away advice and resources everyone should incorporate into their daily habits to keep their ID secure, online and off.
Last year alone, 8.1 million Americans became victims of ID theft resulting in the loss of $45 billion, according to a 2008 report from Javelin Strategy and Research. The report notes that, contrary to popular belief, ID theft is largely a surprisingly low-tech crime, with over one half (56 percent) of traceable cases occurring when the thief has direct contact with the victim’s personal information, such as through a stolen or lost wallet or by rifling through personal records, a mailbox, or trash.
To help keep ID theft prevention top-of-mind, BBB will host two events of this kind during 2008: Saturday May 3rd and again in the fall on Saturday, September 20th. For more information on this event and to find the BBB Secure Your ID Day event nearest you, visit www.bbb.org/us/secureID.
