Millions of people in the U.S. and around the world find that direct selling fits their unique lifestyle. Whether you’re looking to supplement your income on a part-time basis or want to work full-time building a direct selling business, finding the right opportunity is important. The Direct Selling Association recommends the following tips to get started:
- Identify a company and product that appeal you. Many direct sellers are customers of the company prior to signing on as a consultant, so identifying potential matches is fairly easy. For a place to start, visit www.dsa.org for a list of some of the leading direct selling companies.
- Take your time deciding. There’s no rush to get started, so relax and make sure your decision is the right one. A great opportunity won’t disappear overnight.
- Ask questions. Do some research to learn about the company, its leadership and its products or services. Ask about the start-up fees, realistic costs of doing business, average earnings of distributors, return policies, and anything else you may be concerned about. Don’t hesitate to contact the company directly if you have additional questions.
- Ask for copies of company materials about the opportunity and read them. Be informed.
- Consult with others who have had experiences with the company and its products. Verify the products or services are actually being sold to consumers.
- Investigate and verify all information. Do not assume that “official looking” documents are accurate or complete or even produced by the company, as opposed to the person trying to recruit you. If anything seems like a red flag, be sure to check it out.
- Check the company out. Check to see if it is a member of the Direct Selling Association (DSA). DSA members have pledged to abide by and uphold the DSA Code of Ethics, which is designed to protect both customers and those who sell the company’s products. In addition, contact your local Better Business Bureau, state attorney general or consumer protection office to inquiry about the company.
