Juggling work and family life can become a whirlwind for many parents, and it can become even more so during the summer. The question of what to do with the kids during the summer months is a big issue for a lot of families. Summer camp may be the answer. But with all the choices out there it can be difficult to find just the right program for your child.

Before starting your search, it is important to know your child's personality and identify what camp program will benefit him or her most. When looking at camps, include your child in the decision-making process. Some camps have structured programs where camp staff schedules all campers' activities. Others are more flexible, allowing campers to choose some or all of their daily activities.

To assist your search, the Better Business Bureau suggests you consider the following questions:

  • Where is the camp and how much does it cost? How long does each session run?

  • What age groups are represented and in what percentage?

  • Is the program coed? If so, what's the approximate ratio of boys to girls?

  • Who is the camp director and what is his or her background? How is the staff trained? What is the ratio of campers to staff members?

  • Are medical facilities adequate? Is there a nurse or doctor on staff?

  • If it is an overnight camp, what kind of living/eating/recreational facilities does the program offer? What is the daily schedule like? Is there enough free time or too much?

  • What are the safety regulations? What kind of supervision is provided?

  • Are visitors allowed? What kind of communication is allowed: mail, phone calls, email, etc.

  • How does the staff handle homesickness?

Look for camps that are certified by the American Camp Association (ACA). ACA accredited camps have met up to 300 nationally recognized standards.
