Becoming an Arbitrator
BBB provides training for individuals to become arbitrators and manage hearings for our local and national programs.
The goal of arbitration is to resolve business/customer disputes quickly and economically as an alternative to the court system. Accordingly, arbitration is a professional activity requiring high levels of specific skills, including excellent written, verbal, listening, fact-finding and logical reasoning skills.
Joining the Local Panel
If you are seeking to conduct hearings for dispute resolution programs, please contact your BBB. Dispute resolution staff will advise you of requirements and training opportunities.
Joining the National Panel
Individuals who are attorneys or have prior arbitration experience in another forum can participate in a one and a half day (two days in California) arbitrator training. Other persons possessing the skills listed above who have subject matter expertise may also be considered.
Becoming a Mediator
If you are already a trained mediator and are looking to volunteer for your BBB, please contact them directly to determine whether they offer mediation services, and to get more information about any specific training requirements they have in place for their mediators. You may look up your BBB.
