Tucson, AZ - July 23, 2008
- BBB is warning southern Arizona businesses to be alert to calls or voice mails seeking payment from an individual claiming to be with BBB.
Businesses across the country are getting calls originating from a Jamaican exchange from a woman using the name of Mrs. Reynolds and Mrs. Smith. In some cases the callers are seeking a $100 payment; in others, they leave a voice mail stating they have a package on hold and the business should call 876-588-7235.
Local businesses that receive a suspicous call should contact their local BBB office. The Tucson BBB can be reached at (520) 888-6161 and the BBB serving Cohise County can be reached at (520) 459-2880.
There are no BBBs in Jamaica and legitimate calls coming from BBB would not be of this nature. BBB would never have a "package" on hold for a company in lieu of a payment., says Kim States, BBB spokesperson.
BBB urges businesses or consumers who might be contacted by someone claiming to be with BBB anywhere outside of North America to report the call to their local BBB as well as the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov
or 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357).
