Choosing A Vehicle Repair Facility

BBB offers the following tips when choosing an auto repair facility:

Look for a repair facility before you need one; you can make better decisions when you're not rushed.

Ask friends and associates for their recommendations.

Never choose a repair facility based solely on its convenient location.

Look for a well-organized facility with vehicles in the parking lot equal in value to your own and modern equipment in the service bays.

Ask if the shop is familiar with your vehicle make and model and the type of repair needed. Some facilities specialize in specific models or repairs.

Look for signs of technician competence. The customer area should display trade school diplomas, certificates of advanced course work, and ASE certifications. ASE is a nationally recognized standard of technician competence. If diplomas or certificates are not displayed, ask to see them.

Professionally run establishments will have a courteous, helpful staff. The manager, service writer, or technician should be willing to answer your questions.

Labor rates, fees for testing and diagnostic work, guarantees, methods of payment, etc. should be clearly posted.

Start with a minor job. Reward good service with repeat business and more complex work.

Repair bills should list the charges for parts and labor separately. You have a right to inspect all replaced parts, and any auto repair facility must offer to return all replaced parts except those under warranty, trade-in or core parts.

Consult your local BBB about the reputation of the shop; inquire about the number, nature, and resolution of complaints.
