Founded in 1981, Operation Food Search (OFS), a leading non-profit in
hunger relief, is the largest distributor of free food in the bi-state region.
Our mission: Nourish and Educate our Neighbors in Need to Heal the Hurt of
Each month, Operation Food Search helps to feed and educate over 200,000 individuals in the St. Louis bi-state region who struggle with hunger and food insecurity through our key programs: Emergency Food Distribution, Operation Backpack, Nutrition Education, and the Summer Meals Program.
Operation Food Search rescues food near its freshness date and no longer saleable, yet nutritious and edible, from supermarkets, manufacturers, distributors, restaurants and caterers. As part of the Emergency Food Distribution program, OFS and its partner agencies collect nearly two million dollars worth of food each month for immediate distribution to feed our hungry neighbors in the City of St. Louis and in 31 Missouri and Illinois counties.
Operation Backpack is a childhood hunger relief program that has grown to serve more than 8,000 each weekend throughout the academic year in 58 districts on both sides of the river. Operation Backpack provides hungry children with food bags to take home over the weekend to get them back to school on Monday nourished and ready to learn.
Its Nutrition Education program impacts thousands of people through classes aimed at teaching nutrition and good cooking skills. Cooking demonstrations and full six-week classes can be specialized for children, adults or families, to make sure that everyone learns the skills needed to shop for and prepare healthy meals at home.
The Summer Meals program serves children who can no longer rely on the meals they received at school and are therefore food insecure. Through stationary feeding sites as well as mobile food vehicles, Operation Food Search sponsored nearly 100,000 Summer Meals that were served to hungry children at no cost during the 2016 Summer.
Operation Food Search also operates a 24-hour Hunger Hotline to help connect hungry people with community partner agencies that can serve them in their area.
