(March 31 2014) As Netflix grows in popularity, scammers use the popular entertainment tool to steal from innocent people in Southern Colorado

 

Troublesome scammers have once again identified another opportunity to steal your personal and financial information and your Better Business Bureau of Southern Colorado wants to provide you with some tips to avoid this latest form of deceit.

 

A new phishing scam has surfaced designed to steal private information from Netflix subscribers. Netflix users that are targeted will be led to a phony webpage that resembles the Netflix login page; but it isn’t at all.

 

When the innocent subscriber is contacted (and the scam tricks them), the unknowing Netflix users will enter their account information and the fake website will claim that a user’s account has been suspended. A fake customer service number is provided and a false “representative” recommends the user download the “Netflix support software,” which is remote login software that gives the fake representative full access to your computer. This is where things can go wrong for you, the trusting consumer – if this happens, the ‘representative’ suddenly has access to your personal information such as banking records, private documents and personal history at their finger tips.

 

There are three key items consumers should look for that proves an email involved in this scam is not from Netflix: First, the phone number does not belong to Netflix. Instead, the number belongs to a call center in India. Second, the webpage is a pop up which would never happen if the communications came from Netflix. Third, the “representative” wants to login to your computer via remote software.

 

Here are some tips on how to avoid this scam:

 

  • Absolutely, never allow someone from Netflix or any company the access to login to your computer remotely. When someone logs in, they can do anything you can do on your computer. They can access anything including your personal and financial information.

  • Do not click links on the emails. It is better to type the address in the search bar on your web browser manually to see if it is indeed safe and true.

  • If the URL seems odd to you, do not continue to go to the site. If it is a scam, it will most likely have an unusual URL. It will likely contain a common name but be accompanied by some jumbled letters or numbers.

  • Always look up the company’s phone number on their website. If you need to call a company, look it up on their official website. This can make sure that you are calling a legitimate number.
