Industry Tips

CHARITABLE SOLICITATIONS in LUBBOCK

If you have been asked to donate monies, time or in-kind gifts to an organization or individual, your BBB advises that you give with your head as well as your heart.

10 TIPS FOR BETTER GIVING:

1. Watch out for similar names. Some charity names sound the same. Be sure to look at the name carefully, because the charity soliciting you may not be the one you have in mind.

2. Do not be pressured to make an immediate gift. Be wary of solicitors that demand an 'on the spot donation.

3. Question vague appeals. Watch out for appeals that are strong on identifying a problem, but weak on describing what specifically the charity intends to do about it.

4. Do not give out personal information to phone solicitors. Do not give out credit card numbers, checking account numbers or any other personal information to unknown telephone solicitors.

5. Do not give cash. Write out a check to the charity's full official name, not to an individual or third party that may be collecting the donation.

6. Keep records of your donations (receipts, cancelled checks, and bank statements) so you can document your charitable giving at tax time.

7. If you want a deduction, make sure the organization is a charity. To be sure this organization is eligible to receive gifts deductible as charitable donations, review the list of organizations in IRS Publication 78 OR ask the charity for a copy of its tax exmpt status determination letter.

8. Don't hesitate to ask the charity for written information on its programs and finances.

9. To verify if a charity is registered to solicit, contact your state government. Remember that the state registration does not mean 'approval', it means they have filed the appropriate forms.

10. Report bad practices. Contact BBB or Attorney General's office about solicitation problems.

LUBBOCK CITY ORDINANCE
Chapter 20 Article IV

Provides a method in which the public can have access to information about organizations soliciting funds for charitable purposes. This ordinance was designed to protect the legitimate charitable organizations from those that might profit from their good name.

Organizations and individuals that go to the general public to solicit funds to benefit a charity must get registered with the City of Lubbock. Churches, hospital groups, schools or government-sponsored groups are exempt.

Lubbock City Secretary registers and obtains a fee of $15.00 along with a copy of the certificate of tax-exempt status. This registration is renewable annually for a fee of $5.00.
