With an estimated 25% of online ticket sales for this Sunday’s playoff game coming from Southern California, to say there thousands of excited Chargers fans in San Diego is an understatement. And while the majority of us will opt to watch the game from the comfort of our homes or local sports bar, there are a surprising number of Bolts fans who are browsing the internet for a ticket for the game.

So before you pack up your gear and get ready to head to the mile-high city, what should you be on the lookout for? Ticketing scams are in abundance at this point in the season and your San Diego BBB is here with tips and tricks for avoiding a fraud:

Verify legitimacy: Reputable ticket vendors, such as Ticketmaster, Stubhub and NFL-verified companies, are the best choices for buying your playoff tickets this season. If you decide to go with a third party reseller, verify their legitimacy with the BBB or NATB (National Association of Ticket Brokers) before you hand over a credit card number or check (never send cash!)

Check the refund policy: Only buy tickets from a reseller that provides clear details about the terms of the transaction. What happens if the event is cancelled or postponed? Is there a period where you can receive a refund prior to the event? Make sure the terms are explicit and that you read the fine print.

Be skeptical: If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Fake tickets often look real – there will most likely be a barcode, legitimate seat numbers and proper logos. Don’t be fooled and trust your gut.

Pay with a credit card: When paying with a credit card, you do have some recourse. Never send resellers cash or buy tickets from a scalper off the street. If the tickets are counterfeit and you’ve been scammed, report the transaction to your credit card company and they will aid you in resolving the problem and getting your money back.

Report fraud immediately: Every playoff season, hundreds of football fans show up to games with counterfeit tickets, unable to watch their favorite team take the field. Sports fans who do wind up with phony tickets should report the fraud immediately and provide as much documentation as possible. Consumers can also file a complaint on bbb.org to aid in resolving the issue.
