In 2010, 8.1 million Americans fell victim to identity theft, a 28% decrease from 2009, according to a Javelin Strategy & Research report. The overall cost of identity theft fraud also fell from $54 billion in 2009 to $37 billion in 2010.
“We’re thrilled that our efforts may have attributed to the decrease in identity theft fraud in 2010,” said Gary Almond, President of the BBB serving Northeast California. “We hope consumers remain on their guard and continue to shred their personal and financial data.”
In 2010, consumer costs (the out of pocket dollar amounts victims pay) increased from 2009. Experts attribute this increase to new account fraud, which showed longer periods of misuse and detection and therefore an increase in consumer losses.
There have been breaches of secure information in nearly every sector of the business community, not just in the credit industry. It also reaches into education, health care, banking, and even into government sectors. Anyone can be affected by identity theft.
Prevention is the best answer to protect oneself from ID thieves, which is why it is important to SHRED, SHRED, SHRED.
