Complaint: March 18, EVCO's owner,***, came to my apartment to quote the cost of my furniture restoration. I never ever did it before, and wondered, whether it was worthy. *** checked five items: 1. Seat of the dining chair cracked. 2. TV stand needed a bigger hole in it's cardboard back - VCR didn't fit. 3. Twopillows inside my sofa got flat - replacement needed. 4. On the dresser's mirror, the frame started to peel - I washed it, while its some cheap wood imitation. *** said, it requires sanding and refurnishing. 5. Oak desk got old - complete resurfacing. *** is in business for many ears, he said, and also owns EVCO. His estimate was "approximately $2,000"; then, he gave me a copy of the receipt that nobody could read or understand. I paid $400 down payment on the same day of his visit, March 18. When *** showed up in mid-May to pick up my furniture, I gave him 4 items instead of 5 - I can make a hole myself in the cardboard, or live with what is there now. *** became extremely agitated, upset, irritated: "You can't change terms of our contract! l" Yesterday, June 17, *** called me that my furniture is ready on Friday, June 20, but the price is $2,200 plus tax. Nothing passes smell test at ***'s EVCO. He checked my sofa, chair, cracked mirror frame, and a desk - no hidden complications. To the best of my arithmetic skills, $2,000 - $400 = $1,600 $1,600 - TV stand = much less. Where that extra $1,000 came from, if !may ask? Besides, the price of my dining table with 4 chairs, brand new, from Cost Plus, was $125. *** charged me $300 to glue its seat down. Sofa with the armchair, also brand new, from Cost Plus, was under $800 ( with includes ALL MATERIALS, labor, delivery, insurances, etc.) How come he charged me $600 for two new synthetic pillows? I was expecting to pay somewhat over $1,000, but he wants over $2,200, plus tax for less work. *** kept repeating over and over and over, like broken record that he is the only one who provides "free" pick up and delivery. Since when 15 min. drive worth $1,000??

Desired Settlement: Billing Adjustment

Dear *** ******:

I write on behalf of *** ***** and Evco Custom Upholstery in response to the BBB's letter of June 20, 2014, which enclosed the above referenced
Taskar complaint.

Specifically, **** ******'s complaint stated that her desired settlement was a 
"Billing Adjustment" The entire complaint seems to be predicated on a mistake of fact, no doubt inadvertent, on **** ******'s behalf - she references a baseline original quote of $2,000, and from there bases her equitable idea of a resolution on adjustment of actual  work performed.


Significantly, on the same date of the BBB's complaint (June 20), and before *** ***** received or was ever aware of the existence of a complaint to the BBB, on their own initiative and in the spirit of cooperation and informal resolution embodied by the BBB's Standards, **** ****** and Evco fully resolved the issue, and in fact signed an informal writing on June 20 expressing resolution.  (As I explained in my email to you yesterday regarding the circumstances of Evco's loss of *****, I can obtain a copy of this writing signed by **** ****** on June 20 if the BBB wishes, however it may take a day or two for me to obtain it from Evco.)  Thus, it is quite possible that the entire issue was resolved and therefore moot even before **** ****** presented the BBB with complaint 10099675.


The written agreement resolving any dispute between **** ****** and Evco in fact provided **** ****** with a sizeable discount of $1,050.00 from the original estimate thereby providing her with the exact desired outcome expressed in her complaint to the BBB.


Evco is hopeful that the BBB will recognize this fully resolved matter as a misunderstanding that has been completely clarified before Evco ever learned of a BBB complaint - and that at least as early as June 20 **** ****** expressed her satisfaction.

In all, **** ****** understandably desired an amended description of the final work that she desired to be performed after she changed her mind on the scope after the original meeting between herself and *** *****.  Evco, on its own initiative, promptly provided that amended description and pricing commensurate with and reflecting the final scope of work that she chose to be performed.


*** ***** and Evco trust that this adequately addresses the issues raised in Mrs. ******'s BBB complaint.

Consumer Response: On July 25, Friday evening, my attorney called me to pick up my long suffered furniture at his office. After Evco's three no-shows, on July 18, 21, and 22, its owner,*** finally returned it to me. Four times is a charm. Needless to say, I am glad that my ordcal is over. Thank you for your time and support, staff of the Better Business Bureau.

Complaint: We had somebody out to look at our chairs. The chairs were begining to sag. I wanted the chairs fixed. Evco let me know that it shouldn't cost more then $400 each chair. I thought this was very expensive but *** kept saying how expensive the fabric was. I paid $100 check deposit and he took the chairs. 16 1/2 weeks later we received a call stating the chairs were done and it would be $1485. They stated that I could not pay with checks only cash. I do not want to pay with cash only check but *** said his accounting department will not take checks. (Only new strapping and foam was replaced on both chairs) *** stated that he could not give a written estimate as it would be hard to tell.

Desired Settlement: I want my chairs delivered to my house so that I can see they have been repaired then we will pay this outrageous price as I do not see a way out of this one.

Business Response: Final Consumer Response
Customer states that this matter was settled through court mediation (no judgement) and they agreed reluctantly to pay a reduced cost of $1200 for the repaired chairs. Mrs. ******* had prepared a statement for the judge which she wants to mail to us for our records. Although they settled, she asked that BBB continue to look into the matter.
