BBB promotes truth in advertising by contacting advertisers whose claims conflict
BBB Code of Advertising. These claims come to our attention from our internal
review of advertising, consumer complaints and competitor challenges. BBB asks advertisers
to prove their claims, change ads to make offers more clear to consumers, and remove
misleading or deceptive statements.
The following describes a government action that has been resolved by either a settlement or a decision by a court or administrative agency. If the matter is being appealed, it will be noted below. On May 31, 2012, SunTrust Mortgage, Inc. entered into a Consent Order with the United States District Court, Eastern District of Virginia. The Order settles allegations that the business engaged in a pattern or practice of conduct in violation of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act and the Fair Housing Act by discriminating on the basis of race and national origin in the extension of residential credit and in the making of residential real estate-related transactions. Under terms of the Order, the business agreed to pay $21 million to resolve the lawsuit and to continue using policies and practices it adopted to prevent discrimination following the time period at issue in the lawsuit. The Consent Order was for settlement purposes only and should not be considered an admission of guilt or finding of violation of the law.
