BBB Warns of Text Scams Offering Gift Cards this Holiday Season

December 10, 2012

Better Business Bureau serving Eastern North Carolina has received numerous calls regarding a text message offering a gift card from large retailers such as Target, Walmart and Best Buy. BBB warns that this is a scam and urges consumers to avoid responding to the message or clicking on any links.

In most cases, the text message claims that the consumer has won a $1,000 gift card and instructs the consumer to follow a link to claim their prize. Once users click on the link, they are asked for personal information that could be used to steal their identity.

BBB offers the following advice to consumers who receive this text message:

· Do not click on any links or reply to the text message.

· Delete any messages that claim you have won a prize.

· Do not provide personal information, including your Social Security number or credit card numbers, to claim prizes.

· Check your bank statements and credit cards on a regular basis for unauthorized charges.
